The Terrestrial Environmental Observation Network (TEON) is intended to meet the need for a sustainable environmental observing network for northern Alaska. The TEON plan proposes collection of a time series of specific environmental variables in seven representative watersheds across northern Alaska. The White House Council for Environmental Quality has identified two national watersheds to pilot large-scale drought resiliency implementation. The Missouri Headwaters Basin within the GNLCC region and High Divide landscape is one of these national demonstration areas, and the GNLCC can advance its collective mission with this opportunity. Greater sage-grouse genetic connectivity is essential to the species persistence across the Great Northern landscape; without such connectivity the greater sage-grouse may suffer the same fate as many other related species of grouse, which disappeared from the middle and eastern portion of the United States due to loss of habitat coupled with inbreeding depression. Dr. Cross will support the WAFWA Sagebrush Conservation Design by co-leading the connectivity sub-group for FY22 and 23 with Dr. Zeller. This group will convene ecosystem experts to create spatial action maps for ecological connectivity among sagebrush core areas. This group will then evaluate the degree to which ecological connectivity captures functional connectivity of one high-priority species and one high-priority taxa group within the sagebrush biome: (1) greater sage-grouse and (2) migratory ungulates. Dr. Cross will also directly support the wildlife fire sub-group by serving as a spatial analyst to support analyses.

FY2015Persistent ecosystem and anthropogenic disturbances and stressors are threatening sustainability of sagebrush ecosystems in the western US, and managers and policy makers are seeking strategic, holistic approaches for species conservation and ecosystem restoration. Recent research indicates that an understanding of ecosystem resilience to disturbance and resistance to nonnative invasive species can be used to prioritize management activities across large landscapes and determine the most appropriate actions at project scales. This project expands upon an already funded SGI initiative to optimize locations for conifer removal to benefit sage-grouse using the Falkowski conifer map layer (funded through LCMAP grant) and Doherty breeding density map. Adds capability to also optimize for sagebrush dependent songbirds (and potentially pygmy rabbits) while minimizing impacts to PJ obligates such as Pinyon Jays. Will import directly into dashboard decision support tool.
