The Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge (Refuge), on the windward slopes of Mauna Kea, Hawai’i, is an important habitat for Hawaiian forest birds and plants, several of which are listed as endangered. Surrounding lands are managed by a variety of entities for conservation and other purposes. This landscape is experiencing environmental change, and is projected to experience altered temperatures and rainfall patterns in coming decades. In turn, these changes will likely alter the distributions of invasive weeds and mosquitoes, and reduce or eliminate populations of sensitive native species. We propose to work with the Rocky Mountain Partnership Forum to expand upon the successful approach applied in the first two years of this project to help managers incorporate climate change science into their natural resource management decisions for a new resource of interest that will be chosen by the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum members. This project will be implemented through the Rocky Mountain Partner Forum to share information with and among partners about emerging climate science and strategies for integrating climate change into natural resource management decisions in the region. A combination of focus groups and usability tests were used to explore the needs and preferences of a variety of NPLCC stakeholders as regards data management platform content, format, and features. This information was used to inform NPLCC decisions about how best to meet needs not currently met by LC MAP through adjustments or enhancements to LC MAP itself or by connecting stakeholders with other platforms or portals.

Climate change is the most pressing societal challenge of our time, with projected changes likely to result in cascading impacts to species, ecosystems, and ecosystem services. These impacts will exacerbate current resource challenges for the Hawaiian Islands, such as conflict over water resources, land use and degradation, and invasive species. This project developed hydrologic projections for diverse wetland habitats (e.g. forest wetlands, wet meadows, small ponds, and riparian wetlands) in the Pacific Northwest (PNW) for the 2020s, 2040s, and 2080s, which can be used to support ecological and landscape-based vulnerability assessments and climate change adaptation planning. The project leveraged existing downscaled climate model scenarios and associated hydrologic datasets developed under separate funding and extended them to examine changes in aquatic habitat.Products developed in this research include new hydroclimatic datasets for assessing changes in the hydroperiod of PNW wetlands.
