This dataset is a compilation of boundary location polygons for 167 hydraulic mine pits located in northern California. This dataset was compiled from three sources, Topographically Occurring Mine Symbols (TOMS) database produced by the California Department of Conservation (2001), Yeend (1974), and on-screen digitizing, using current (2015) satellite imagery, of additional hydraulic mine pits not contained in either of these sources. This data release contains California Department of Water Resources borehole data that were regularized by the US Geological Survey. The dataset contains borehole lithologic data, and geospatial data of water wells in the Hat Creek basin California, located east of Mount Shasta in northern California. The borehole dataset is released as an excel table and a shapefile and includes (1) individual borehole location, and (2) downhole lithologic interval data derived from well drillers’ lithology logs. The geospatial data consists of a point feature class that is a 2-dimensional representation of the locations of Hat Creek basin well logs.

The Russian River Watershed (RRW) covers about 1,300 square miles (without Santa Rosa Plain) of urban, agricultural, and forested lands in northern Sonoma County and southern Mendocino County, California. Communities in the RRW depend on a combination of Russian River water and groundwater to meet their water-supply demands. Water is used primarily for agricultural irrigation, municipal and private wells supply, and commercial uses - such as for wineries and recreation. Annual rainfall in the RRW is highly variable, making it prone to droughts and flooding from atmospheric river events. The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 17 wells in the Indio subbasin (CA basin designation 7-21.01) of the Coachella Valley and surface water samples from two sites representing sources of recharge to the Indio subbasin in 2021. Two tributary watersheds¬ Cottonwood Creek and Little Dry Creek¬ to the greater San Joaquin watershed, in California’s Central Valley were assessed for sediment and flow dynamics, between water years (Oct. 1 to Sept. 30) 2011 and 2019. The two systems deliver suspended sediment to the San Joaquin River below Friant Dam, California. Because these two creeks are directly down river of Friant Dam, they become the most upstream source of sediment to the San Joaquin River below Friant Dam. The Santa Clara River Lakes, located along the San Andreas fault 19 miles northwest of Palmdale, California, were placed on the state’s “303(d) List” or “Impaired Water List” in 1996 for eutrophic conditions, high pH, and low dissolved oxygen. In 2016, the state adopted a Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) for nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus) in the Santa Clara River Lakes. On October 13, 2020 a survey of Upper Letts Lake was conducted where both bathymetric and terrestrial lidar data were collected. Additionally, six bed material samples and three core samples were collected to understand the characterization of the grain-size of the lake bed. Survey data were merged with an additional lidar dataset from the USGS 3DEP program to create digital elevation model (DEM). The DEM was used to update the stage-storage and stage-surface area tables for the reservoir. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Air Force Civil Engineering Center (AFCEC) have entered into a cooperative agreement to refine the hydrogeology in the Northeast AFRL and Arroyos groundwater areas of the Air Force Research Laboratory of Edwards Air Force Base. The California Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment Program (GAMA) is a statewide, comprehensive assessment of groundwater quality designed to help better understand and identify risks to groundwater resources. GAMA is being implemented by the California State Water Resources Control Board. The USGS is the technical lead for the Priority Basin Project (PBP), one of the components of the GAMA Program. Samples were collected on June 16, 2020 from cores (less than 1m depth) and processed for the full size distribution.

This dataset identifies the number of individually-owned domestic wells, and the number of households relying upon domestic water supply in the state of California. The number of wells and households are summarized for each Public Land Survey System (PLSS) section. The well locations were determined from more than 635,000 scanned well-completion reports (WCRs) provided by the California Department of Water Resources in 2011. This is only a partial sample of the total number of WCRs (estimated at 1 to 2 million in total). There are more than 42,000 entries in the USGS Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS) for the State of California. Previously, the field for deposit type was sparsely populated, which made it difficult to evaluate mine sites needing environmental remediation. This has been rectified by populating the deposit type field using 100 deposit types cited in previous USGS publications, and 137 provisional deposit types described here. Other categories listed in the deposit type field include 29 types of mineral processing facilities, 6 miscellaneous categories used previously in MRDS, and 56 unclassified categories tied to primary commodity. Hi-Desert Water District (HDWD) is constructing a wastewater treatment plant as part of a groundwater replenishment and reuse project (GRRP) in the east hydrogeologic unit (Nishikawa, and others, 2003) of the Warren Valley Basin (7-012) (California Department of Water Resources, 2016) in Yucca Valley, CA. The HDWD plans to use reclaimed wastewater for managed aquifer recharge by spreading treated wastewater into unlined ponds at the GRRP facility. Edwards Air Force Base (EAFB) is located about eight kilometers (km) northeast of the city of Lancaster, California. In 1990 EAFB was placed on the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s National priorities list due to the presence of contaminated soil and groundwater.
