We assessed the resilience of wetlands to sea-level rise along a transitional gradient from tidal freshwater forested wetland (TFFW) to oligohaline marsh by measuring processes controlling wetland elevation. We identified fundamental differences in how resilience is maintained across wetland community types, which have important implications for management activities that aim to restore or conserve resilient systems.

The focus of this dataset is soil temperature collected on four mountain summits in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA from 2003 through 2018. Two summit sites were established in 2003 on Dancing Lady and Bison Mountain, east of the continental divide. Two additional summit sites were established in 2004 on Pitamakin and Mt. Seward, also east of the continental divide. These four summit sites comprise a target region set up in accordance with the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA). GLORIA was initiated by the University of Vienna in 2000 and protocols for operating target regions have been refined and revised since then. Sixty-nine GLORIA target regions now exist throughout the...

This dataset is focused on alpine plant species presence/absence, species turnover, and trends in species abundance on four mountain summits in Glacier National Park, Montana, USA from 2003 through 2014. Two summit sites were established in 2003 on Dancing Lady and Bison Mountain, east of the continental divide. Two additional summit sites were established in 2004 on Pitamakin and Mt. Seward, also east of the continental divide. This multi-summit approach to monitoring alpine plant species follows the protocols of the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA) that were initiated by the University of Vienna in 2000 and which have been refined and revised since then. The need to monitor change in sagebrush steppe is urgent due to the increasing impacts of climate change, shifting fire regimes, and management practices on ecosystem health. Remote sensing provides a cost-effective and reliable method for monitoring change through time and attributing changes to drivers. We report an automated method of mapping rangeland fractional component cover over a large portion of the Northern Great Basin, USA, from 1986 to 2016 using a dense Landsat imagery time series. 2012 was excluded from the time-series due to a lack of quality imagery. Our method improved upon the traditional change vector method by considering the legacy of change at each pixel. We evaluate cover trends stratified...

We developed an approach to quantify Urban Heat Island (UHI) extent and intensity in 50 cities of CONUS and its surrounding area by using surface temperature from Landsat surface temperature product in a time series manner. Landsat land surface temperature from Landsat Analysis Ready Data (ARD) were used to quantify surface temperature changes from 1985 to 2020. The current study assessed UHI intensity and its variations associated with urban development in an annual basis. Two datasets, over the study period, show that the maximum surface temperature in the high intensity urban area significantly increased while no significant trend was found in surrounding non-urban areas. These released datasets were spatially...

Using ~ 1 m resolution imagery collected between 2000 and 2010, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Civil Applications Center (NCAC) monitored dramatic changes at East Timbalier Island, a Gulf of Mexico barrier island located on the west side of the Mississippi River Delta (Thomas et. al, 2011). The imagery was collected by US National Imagery Systems (USNIS) and archived at the USGS Global Fiducials Library (GFL). New research expands this study both retrospectively and prospectively using declassified imagery collected in 1962 and 1972; Landsat imagery collected since 1972; aerial photography collected since 1953; and 1991-2020 GFL imagery.

These polygon features represent the maximum extent of the 37 named glaciers in Glacier National Park and two glaciers on U.S. Forest Service’s Flathead National Forest land during the peak of the Little Ice Age (mid-nineteenth century). Glacial margins are based on moraine deposits that result from active glaciation, and do not depict perennial snow and ice. Moraines were digitized based on WorldView imagery acquired on the following dates: 20141019, 20150822, 20150912, 20150925, 20160821, 20160915 (World View 01 and World View 03 satellites). High resolution imagery was supplemented with oblique aerial photographs flown in 2009 and 2016, historic photographs from the USGS photograph collection, and field notes...

The Louisiana State Legislature created Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection, and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed persuant to these acts specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to arresting coastal wetlands loss. This data set includes mosaicked aerial photographs for the Atchafalaya Sediment Delivery (AT-02) project for 2016. This data set is used as a basemap for habitat classification. It also serves as a visual tool for project managers to help them identify any obvious problems or land loss within their...

Groundwater, soil pore water, and surface water were collected in and near wetland P1 in the Cottonwood Lake Study Area, Stutsman County, North Dakota in August 2013. Groundwater was collected from established wells (17, 18, and 22) via peristaltic pump. Surface water was collected from P1 ponded water via grab sample. Soil pore water was collected using drive point samplers and one suction lysimeter. Water samples were analyzed for pH and major ion chemistry.

This product provides regional estimates of specific wetland types (bog and fen) in Alaska. Available wetland types mapped by the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) program were re-classed into bog, fen, and other. NWI mapping of wetlands was only done for a portion of the area so a decision tree mapping algorithm was then developed to estimate bog, fen, and other across the state of Alaska using remote sensing and GIS spatial data sets as inputs. This data was used and presented in two chapters on the USGS Alaska LandCarbon Report.

The dataset provides an estimate of 2020 herbaceous mostly annual fractional cover predicted on May 1st with an emphasis on annual exotic grasses Historically, similar maps were produced at a spatial resolution of 250m (Boyte et al. 2019 https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZEK5M1., Boyte et al. 2018 https://doi.org/10.5066/P9KSR9Z4.), but we are now mapping at a 30m resolution (Pastick et al. 2020 doi:10.3390/rs12040725). This dataset was generated using in situ observations from Bureau of Land Management’s (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring data (AIM) plots; weekly composites of harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) data (https://hls.gsfc.nasa.gov/); relevant environmental, vegetation, remotely sensed, and geophysical...

Data are cross-listed on https://rangelands.app/cheatgrass/ Cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and other invasive annual grasses represent one of the single largest threats to the health and resilience of western rangelands. To address this challenge, the Western Governors Association (WGA)-appointed Western Invasive Species Council convened a cheatgrass working group to develop a new regional vision for invasive annual grass management across the West. Foundational to implementing this new vision is the creation of a common spatial map to guide strategic actions. The WGA cheatgrass working group sought to develop a 30-m base map of annual herbaceous cover to support a common spatial strategy for tackling invasive annual...
