This data release contains time-lapse imagery taken at U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) stream gaging stations with associated hydrologic and meteorological data related to each image. These data are to help improve the development of models in detecting water elevation at a given stream gaging station. Images of the water surface and surroundings at USGS stream gaging stations were taken at varying time intervals ranging between every five minutes to an hour. Cameras used include trail cameras, web cameras, and the custom river imagery sensing (RISE) camera. A Bell 407 helicopter with a gyro-stabilized gimbal was used to collect aerial videos of Illinois River Water Science basin riverine study sites on June 7, 2022. Videos were collected during three flights on June 7, 2022 and focused on study sites along the Illinois River near Starved Rock. Photogrammetry techniques were used with the natural color video images to produce an orthomosaic map of the study reach.

This data release includes multispectral images and field measurements of water depth from the Sacramento River near Glenn, California, used to evaluate the potential for efficient reach-scale mapping of river bathymetry using Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS). The images were acquired by a MicaSense RedEdge-MX Dual Camera deployed from a Trinity F90 vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAS. The 4 km long study area along the Sacramento River was subdivided into three distinct but adjacent areas of interest (AOIs) and image data were collected from one AOI each day between September 14 and 16, 2021. Five commercially available turbidity sensors were field tested by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Hydrologic Instrumentation Facility for accuracy and data comparability. The tested sensors were the Xylem EXO (EXO), the Hach Solitax sc (Solitax), the In-Situ Aqua TROLL sensor installed onto a TROLL 600 sonde (TROLL 600), the Campbell Scientific OBS501 (OBS501), and the Observator ANALITE NEP–5000 (NEP–5000). A reach of the North Santiam River, Oregon, was used as a case study in an ongoing effort to develop and test uncrewed aircraft system (UAS)-based salmon habitat mapping techniques using: (1) particle image velocimetry (PIV) for estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data; and (2) two-dimensional (2D) flow modeling based on remotely sensed topography and bathymetry (topo-bathymetry). In this study, we determined the carbon balance in the Great Dismal Swamp, a large forested peatland in the southeastern USA, which has been drained for over two hundred years and now is being restored through hydrologic management. We modeled future net ecosystem carbon balance over 100 years (2012 to 2112) using in situ field observations paired with simulations of water-table depth. The three scenarios used in the model were baseline conditions, flooded/wet conditions, and drained/dry conditions, which represent a range of potential management actions and climate conditions at the Great Dismal Swamp. Field measurements of depth-averaged flow velocity were acquired from the Tanana and Nenana Rivers near Nenana, Alaska, August 18, 2021, to support research on estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data via particle image velocimetry (PIV). This data release includes the input topographic data sets, model parameters, and validation field measurements of flow velocity used to develop and test multidimensional hydraulic models for a reach of the upper Sacramento River in northern California. Digital elevation models (DEMs) were developed by combining water depth maps of the reach, created using spectrally-based remote sensing methods, with light detection and ranging (lidar) data on water surface and terrestrial elevations. The National Atmospheric Deposition Program/National Trends Network (NADP/NTN) was initiated in 1978 by the Association of State Agricultural Experiment Stations to monitor long-term atmospheric chemistry and the effects pollutants have on aquatic and terrestrial systems.
