The alluvial valley of the North Fork Solomon River is an important agricultural area. Reservoir releases diverted below Kirwin Dam are the principal source of irrigation water. During the 1970'S, severe water shortages occurred in Kirwin Reservoir and other nearby reservoirs as a result of an extended drought. Some evidence indicates that surface-water shortages may have been the result of a change in the rainfall-runoff relationship. Examination of the rainfall-runoff relationship shows no apparent trend from 1951 to 1968, but annual records from 1969 to 1976 indicate that deficient rainfall occurred during 6 of the 8 years. Ground water from the alluvial aquifer underlying the river valley also is used extensively...

The Kansas Geological Survey maintains a library of 332,000 wireline logs. These files represent work done on the collection from 2014 to 2021, and supersedes previous collections.
The Kansas Geological Survey maintains the state's archive of oil and gas well completion forms and other well info, such as drill-stem tests and drillers logs. These are primarily available as paper records. Many have been scanned, and all new forms are submitted electronically to the Kansas Corporation Commission and archived by the Kansas Geological Survey.

This collection includes water well completion forms. Approximately 254,000 water well compeltion forms are described in the main database managed by the Kansas Geological Survey. This collection represents grant work from 2014 to 2021.
A set of historic aerial photographs is owned by the Kansas Geological Survey. This collection represents the state of the database as of November 2022. This collection supersedes all similarly named collections.
This collection includes water well completion forms. Approximately 254,000 water well compeltion forms are described in the main database managed by the Kansas Geological Survey. Information exists for wells constructed, reconstructed, or plugged. Most of the records are paper forms stored in the Kansas Geological Survey library; a growing number of water well reports are digitally submitted. Limited data are transcribed into the database from the forms. The forms are scanned into PDF files.
Water rights in the State of Kansas are complex and dynamic entities that permit their owners the privilege of appropriating water for beneficial use. The amount of information collected on water rights is extensive and increases each year. The Kansas Department of Agriculture, Division of Water Resources (KDA-DWR), currently maintains an Oracle-based RDBMS called the Water Rights Information System (WRIS). The WRIS contains over 70 relational tables that store data on points of diversion (e.g. ground-water wells and surface water intakes), place of use, authorized quantity and rate allocations, historic reported water usage, and a host of other parameters. The ability to extract out information from the WRIS data...
