Data includes satellite derived pre-fire functional group cover of annual and perennial herbaceous, shrubs, bareground and litter across four rangeland megafires in the Western US, as well as field estimated invasive annual grass measurements from the 2nd to 3rd years post-fire. Additional landscape and restoration treatment covariates hypothesized to influence post-fire invasive annual grass cover are included.
The delineation of priority areas in western North America for managing Greater Sage-Grouse (Centrocercus urophasianus) represents a broad-scale experiment in conservation biology. The strategy of limiting spatial disturbance and focusing conservation actions within delineated areas may benefit the greatest proportion of Greater Sage-Grouse. However, land use under normal restrictions outside priority areas potentially limits dispersal and gene flow, which can isolate priority areas and lead to spatially disjunct populations. We used graph theory, representing priority areas as spatially distributed nodes interconnected by movement corridors, to understand the capacity of priority areas to function as connected...
Data includes head smut infection level (caused by the fungal pathogen, Ustilago bullata) on cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum) and cheatgrass cover for plots measured annually during the first four years after the 2015 Soda wildfire. Additional landscape and weather covariates that are hypothesized to influence infection and host density are included.
Renewable energy production can kill birds, but little is known about how it affects avian populations. We assessed vulnerability of populations for 23 priority bird species killed at wind and solar facilities in California, USA.
Sixty-eight monitoring plots within the Browns Park National Wildlife refuge in Northwest Colorado were surveyed in the Summer of 2007 and 2021 for vegetation-community changes after grazing cessation in 1986. Surveys consisted of line-point intercept measurements at 0.5m intervals along three 15-m transects arranged in a spoke around plot center at each plot location.

This dataset contains detection-nondetection data for territorial pairs of Golden Eagles at survey sites randomly selected from a grid of equal-sized (13.9 km2) hexagonal sample cells overlaid across the region of interest in Coastal Southern California during 2016 and 2017. We partitioned surveys within seasons based on approximate transition dates for stages in the breeding cycle of golden eagles in the study region: courtship (15 Dec-28 Feb), incubation (1 Mar-30 Apr), nestling (1 May-15 Jun), and the fledging-dependency period (16 June-Jul 30), totaling 4 possible sampling periods per year. This dataset also describes the proportion of land-cover types from four general categories (urban, open grassland, scrub...
Data are contained in a Microsoft Access database consisting of 27 data tables. Tables provided include emergency stabilization and rehabilitation (ESR) projects sampled, study plot characteristics, and sampled vegetation and fuels data. All data are from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) federal lands within the Great Basin region of the intermountain west. These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release.
Comma-separated values (.csv) files containing data related to mercury in soil, water, sediment, in-stream leaf litter, periphyton, and aquatic invertebrates collected in 2021-2022 from headwater streams associated with wildfires in the northwestern U.S.
Prior to removal of pest species from an area, resource managers must determine if re-immigration from another population is possible. Voles inhabiting Saddle Rock on the southern Oregon coast are suspected to be partially responsible for declines in the Leach's storm petrel colony on the island. The island is very close to the mainland, and it is potentially accessible during below-average low tides. USGS scientists Mark Miller and Susan Haig and colleagues used genetic techniques to assess island vole population connectivity.

These rasters represent plant cover during each of the first five growing seasons after fire in the area burned in the 2015 Soda wildfire. Specifically included cover layers are annual herbaceous, perennial herbaceous, shrub, exotic annual grass, and bareground. Training data for each year was collected via grid-point intercept monitoring between April and August. Empirical Bayesian Kriging Regression (EBK regression) was then used to interpolate field training data and create continuous maps of cover. Accuracy for rasters was assessed via independent test data sets collected on the same landscape.
Body condition indices and related metrics can help assess habitat quality and other ecological processes, and ideally these metrics are based on measures of lipids directly extracted from the species of interest. In recent decades, barred owls (Strix varia) have become a species of conservation concern as they invaded older forests of the U.S. Pacific Northwest, and caused population declines of the closely related and federally threatened northern spotted owl (S. occidentalis caurina). A simple and effective measure of barred owl body condition could help to understand how habitat quality varies within their new range, which in turn can inform their management and other aspects of their ecology. Using 77 barred...

Bio-logging is central to study of wildlife, but questions remain about minimization of effects from bio-logging devices. Rarely considered are changes bio-logging devices induce on an animal’s center of mass (COM) and resulting losses of flight control and stability. In a related paper (Katzner and Young 2024), we applied established aeronautical principles to estimate how the COM of a flying bird or bat may be affected by typical positioning of a bio-logging device on the neck, back, hips, or tail. We then adopted modified thresholds from aerospace engineering to estimate limits beyond which changes to COM result in fitness-relevant alterations to flight control and stability. Here we provide measurements for...

Data set is a combined collection of post-fire species point intercept cover monitoring data across the Murphy 2007 fire, Rush 2012 fire, Holloway 2012 fire, and Soda 2015 fire. Data was collected between 2008 and 2022 by the Bureau of Land Management, US Geological Survey, and Idaho Fish and Wildfire for various purposes. The species data was leveraged to assess post-fire community structure and trajectories.
This data release combines seven airborne thermal infrared (TIR) remote sensing data sets of stream temperature collected along the mainstem of the Middle Fork John Day River (MFJD) in Oregon from 1994 to 2003. Years 1994, 1995, 1996, 1998, and 2002 have single datasets. Year 2003 has two data sets. Most of the TIR data covered the upstream half of the MFJD mainstem between river km 50 and 110, while the 2002 profile covers the lower half starting at the confluence of the MFJD with the North Fork John Day River through river kilometer 64. All TIR data sets were collected by helicopter in an upstream direction in August with the intent of capturing data at or near the maximum summer daily stream temperature. Ground-truthing...

We partitioned a Mahalanobis D2 model of sage-grouse habitat use into separate additive components each representing independent combinations of species-habitat relationships to identify and map range-wide ecological minimums for sage-grouse. We assumed the states delineations of priority areas capture higher quality habitat and larger numbers of sage-grouse populations across our study area. We randomly selected 1669 points from the priority areas and corresponding variables GIS datasets to calibrate models. We estimated distributions of our variables from 1000 iterative samples created by bootstrapping the calibration data. To better incorporate conditions in both large and small priority areas, we restricted...
