These raster data represent the results of a case study in Arizona on how vertebrate richness metrics can be used with existing state and federal guidance in wind and solar energy facility siting. Each of the four geodatabases (see Cross References) contain eight native terrestrial wildlife group models in Arizona: 1) all vertebrates, 2) amphibians, 3) reptiles, 4) birds, 5) mammals, 6) bats, 7) raptors and 8) long-distant migratory birds. An XML workbook is included that lists all terrestrial native vertebrate species in Arizona which cross-walks these species to the name of the National Gap Analysis Project species distribution model.

These data were compiled as part of a field and growth chamber study of the establishment of Salsola tragus (Russian thistle), an invasive non-native annual plant in North America. Field work was conducted at Petrified Forest National Park, Arizona in 2015 and 2016 and the growth chamber study was conducted in 2016. The data represent field measurements of Salsola germination and growth (cover) and sediment movement at two field sites, one a stabilized sand sheet (SS) and the other on the ridge of a sand dune (SD). The data also represent a growth chamber assessment of the soil and litter seed bank from representative samples take at the two field sites.

These data were compiled in support of the 'Predicting the next high-impact insect invasion: Elucidating traits and factors determining the risk of introduced herbivorous insects on North American native plants' project, supported by the U.S. Geological Survey John Wesley Powell Center for Analysis and Synthesis. These data were compiled to assess potential changes in the climatic suitability for 66 species (dominant and associate plant species) and forecast climate exposure for 29 major plant communities within major plant communities in the southwestern United States. An objective of our study was that species within plant communities have unique climate suitability signatures and forecast changes in climatic suitability will not be uniform within the species respective communities or among species within the community. The Buenos Aires National Wildlife Refuge (BANWR), along the Mexican border in southern Arizona, is host to a rich community of bird and mammal species, many of which rely on seed-bearing plants for sustenance. Native bees (Anthophila) provide pollination services vital to the reproduction of such plants, and some of Earth’s highest bee diversity has been documented within the broader Sonoran Desert region. The Central Mojave Special Features shapefile provides point locations for known or potential places where vegetation alliances or unique stands occurred (from 1997-1999) with less than 5 hectares of spatial extent. These designations were provided separately from the Mojave Vegetation Polygons because the target standard for the polygons was a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 5 hectares, thus methods used at the time to assign labels precluded mapping these special features as polygons. The special features points are still included because it is important to note the known or potential location of vegetation alliances for future mapping at finer spatial resolution. The Central Mojave Vegetation Polygons shapefile represents areas of the Mojave Desert classified into vegetation classes or alliances representative of the area from 1997-1999. The classification of these areas were derived from context gathered in the field data, photographs and additional satellite imagery that is not included in this data release. The original map coverage was preserved and released as a shapefile (mojave_veg_polygons.shp). In contrast to the Special Features Points vegetation classifications (described in the Special Features Points shapefile metadata record and ScienceBase item), the Central Mojave Vegetation Polygons were designated by vegetation alliances that extended 5 hectares or more....

The Mojave Vegetation field data were collected to provide context for the classification of the Central Mojave Desert into various vegetation classes. The field data consist of five CSV tables, recovered from their original Microsoft Access format, that together describe the vegetative, environmental and geomorphic properties of the Central Mojave Desert at the time of collection, 1997-1999. The Mojave Plots Points data are 1,219 plot locations in the Central Mojave Desert where field data were recorded and photographs were taken from 1997-1999 to provide context for the classification of the Central Mojave Desert into various vegetation classes. The 1,219 plot locations in the plots points shapefile (plots_points.shp) are each assigned a unique identifier called the FinalPlotCode. The FinalPlotCode can be used to match the shapefile points to the Mojave Field Data. The attached CSV file (Mojave_Images_Crosswalk.csv) can be used to relate the FinalPlotCodes to the associated photographs that are attached as zipped TIFF images to the ScienceBase page. The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data at Risk (DaR) team partnered with the USGS Southwest Biological Science Center (SBSC) to preserve and release tabular data, shapefiles and field photographs of the Central Mojave Desert from 1997-1999. The data were originally collected as part of an effort through the Desert Managers Group (DMG) to develop scientific information on the distribution and characteristics of vegetation in the eastern Mojave Desert of California. This data preservation effort recovers information from obsolete geospatial files, database files, and field photographs and releases it all in open-source formats.
