This data release contains new Earths gravity data from the Sopori Wash sub-basin in Pima and Santa Cruz Counties, Arizona. Data were acquired in January and March of 2017.
The Geoheritage Sites of the Nation project has been established with the ultimate goal of developing a nationwide geoheritage GIS layer to accompany the 2D and 3D layers of the USGI. Through identification of the societal and educational values of significant geologic features, the USGS can provide relevant, inclusive, and accessible data for formal and informal educational opportunities at all levels to the broader public. By developing standardized selection criteria of geoheritage entities and a beta attribute schema, the Geoheritage Sites of the Nation Project hopes to seed the routine use of a methodology for the inclusion of geoheritage information into the USGI structured in ways that make USGS geologic...

At times during the past two million years, glaciers formed in the mountainous part of the Platte River drainage basin. These glaceriers were predominantly valley glaciers, also commonly referred to a s mountain or alpine glaciers. by definition, valley glaciers flow through pre-existing valleys and are bounded by exposed bedrock. the deep valleys and canyons of the map area already existed at the beginning of the Ice Age as a result of regional uplift and subsequent erosion that occured from late Oligocene through Pliocene time. the largest valley glacier in the map area was 45 km long and as much as 600 m thick. During times when Pleistocene glaciers reached their maximum extent, about 10 percent of the mountainous...
The northern half of the Lake Walcott 30 x 60 minute quadrangle shows the geology of the southern part of the Craters of the Moon lava field, the complex geologic features of the Holocene Kings Bowl and Wapi lava fields, and the southern part of the Great Rift volcanic rift zone. The long extent and distribution of skylights in lava-tube systems of the Horse Butte and Wapi Park lava fields are depicted on this map. 40Ar/39Ar and K/Ar age determinations give detail to the Holocene, late Pleistocene, and late middle Pleistocene volcanic for lava fields in this quadrangle. Most of the younger basalt eruptions (<150 ka) have occurred along the Great Rift volcanic rift zone, but two of the younger lava fields are located...

Thin loess deposits on the uplands of the southeastern Colorado Plateau have previously not been well studied. We sampled deposits and soils from trenches on Hatch Point mesa near Canyonlands National Park, Utah, and from two outcrops in Mesa Verde National Park, Colorado. At Hatch Point, the oldest buried unit yielded two OSL ages of 10,370 and 7,555 yr; the middle unit yielded 10 OSL ages from 6220 to 1385 yr; and the youngest unit has a single age of 1740 yr. At Mesa Verde, three loess units are preserved in the two outcrops we examined; six OSL ages range from 51 to 17 ka. At least one buried soil is present between two units with ages of about 50 and 40 ka. The ages of the loess units in both study areas correspond...

This 1:24,000-scale geologic map includes new geologic mapping as well as compilation and revision of previous geologic maps. Field investigations were conducted from 2009-2011, while also mapping and investigating the geology and hydrology of the Chickasaw National Recreation Area, west of the map area. The Fittstown quadrangle is in the northeastern part of the Arbuckle Mountains. The Arbuckle Mountains are composed of a thick sequence of Paleozoic sedimentary rocks that overlie Early Cambrian and Precambrian igneous rocks; these latter rocks are not exposed in the quadrangle. From middle to late Pennsylvanian time, the Arbuckle Mountains region was folded, faulted, and uplifted. Periods of erosion followed these...
The Pagosa Springs geologic map is of the 7.5-minute quadrangle of the same name. It is located in southwestern Colorado, USA and shows the town of Pagosa Springs. The mapped area is southwest of the San Juan volcanic mountains (Oligocene) and north of the San Juan Basin. All bedrock units exposed in the map area are Upper Cretaceous in age except a minor canyon outcrop of Upper Jurassic rock. Pre-Holocene Quaternary age deposits are mainly alluvial gravels and outwash on terraces. Structure is simple: shale and sandstone beds dip at low angles east to northeast as a broad limb of the north-northwest striking Archuleta Anticline. Three geologic cross sections controlled by drill holes are included and depict Mesozoic...
Rapid population growth and declining annual recharge to aquifers in the upper Santa Cruz basin area of southern Arizona, has increased the demand for additional groundwater resources. This demand is predicted to escalate in the future due to higher temperatures, longer droughts, less aquifer recharge, and decreased river and stream base flow. We conducted geologic studies to help evaluate and better understand groundwater resources in the basin. Results of these studies are presented in this report, which summarizes the basin geologic framework and hydrogeology, and presents a 3-D hydrogeologic model for the Rio Rico and Nogales 7.5' quadrangles. Three major hydrogeologic units are displayed in the 3-D model; a...

This 1:50,000-scale geologic map represents a compilation of the most recent geologic studies of the upper Arkansas River valley, between Leadville and Salida, Colorado. The valley is structurally controlled by an extensional fault system that forms part of the prominent northern Rio Grande rift, an intra-continental region of crustal extension. This work also incorporates new detailed geologic mapping of poorly understood areas within the map area and reinterprets previously studied areas, aided by lidar data that covers 59 percent of the map area. The mapped region extends into the Proterozoic metamorphic and intrusive rocks in the Sawatch Range west of the valley and the Mosquito Range to the east. Paleozoic...

This digital publication contains the database, base maps, and style files used to build the geologic map of the upper Santa Cruz River basin in southern Arizona published in U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Map 3490 (Page and others, 2023). Shapefiles are also included for the user’s convenience. In the database, there are polygon features outlining the map units and data sources; line features delineating contacts, faults, and other geologic lines such as dikes, anticlines, and synclines; point features marking where there are age or structural data; and nonspatial tables in which the description of map units, data sources, and glossary information can be found. The database follows the geologic...

This geologic map depicts and briefly describes geologic units underlying Petroglyph National Monument and immediately adjacent areas in Bernalillo County, New Mexico. The Monument is underlain dominantly by Quaternary basalts of the Albuquerque Volcanoes volcanic field, a series of basin-filling volcanic flows and associated vents from a monogenetic volcanic highland along the eastern margin of the Llano de Albuquerque. This compilation builds on data of previously published geologic maps and reports but includes new interpretive synthesis of volcanic stratigraphy and a unified representation of Quaternary surficial deposits overlying volcanic deposits within the Monument and areas immediately adjacent. This geologic...
Over the past 100 yr, several hypotheses have been proposed for the origin and age of the Great Sand Dunes. These hypotheses differ widely in the descriptions of dune morphometry, the immediate source of eolian sand, and when sand transport occurred. The primary purpose of this paper is to evaluate these hypotheses and, where warranted, to present new ideas about the origin and age of the Great Sand Dunes. To evaluate the previous hypotheses, we had to develop more detailed information about the surficial geology of the northern San Luis Valley. Thus, we mapped the surficial geology of an area extending several tens of kilometers north, south, and west of the Great Sand Dunes and examined subsurface stratigraphy...
