Surface-based 2D electrical resistivity tomography (ERT) surveys were used to investigate the distribution of permafrost at wetland sites on the alluvial plain north of the Tanana River, 20 km southwest of Fairbanks, Alaska, in June and September 2014. The sites contained habitat types characteristic of interior Alaska, including thermokarst bog, forested permafrost plateau, and a rich fen. These habitats range from treed to open and vary in groundcover vegetation and peat thickness. Individual surveys used a cable with 56 electrodes at 2-m spacing. At a fen site, ERT surveys were performed across a mixed spruce forest area across a vegetation gradient into an open fen area. At a bog site, surveys were performed...

Pollen was measured in ambient air by several methods and in wet atmospheric deposition samples at three monitoring sites in the National Atmospheric Deposition Program (NADP) National Trends Network. A method for counting pollen on filters was developed and provided pollen counts for NADP atmospheric wet-deposition samples and high-volume ambient air samplers (HVAS) for comparison with co-located traditional microscopy and PollenSense sensor counting methods during the 2021 pollen season. Air and precipitation samples were collected by the NADP and analyzed by the Wisconsin State Laboratory of Hygiene, in Madison, Wisconsin and Aerobiology Research Laboratories (Canada). Daily data were obtained from online summaries...
This is the Supporting Material for Chapter 12: Trend Analysis. In this chapter, various common types of trend tests are classified, and their strengths and weaknesses are compared.

Surveys of channel and floodplain topography were used to characterize the morphology of two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley and to parameterize a hydraulic model. These data were collected to support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. At the Merced River Ranch field site, river channel and floodplain topography was measured using a combination of real-time kinematic (RTK) GPS for wadable parts of the channel, an echo sounder for deep pools, and photogrammetry...

The U.S. Geological Survey maintains a program of water-quality studies in San Francisco Bay (CA) that began in 1969. This USGS data release archives and makes available all measurements from 1969-2015. Water-quality constituent measurements include salinity, temperature, light attenuation coefficient, and concentrations of chlorophyll-a, dissolved oxygen, suspended particulate matter, and dissolved inorganic nutrients (nitrate, nitrite, ammonium, phosphate and silicate). Since the mid-1990s, sampling was conducted at least monthly at 37 fixed sampling locations along a 145-km transect from lower South San Francisco Bay to the lower Sacramento River. A map and table of sampling locations are included in the Attached...

To support an investigation of the effectiveness of a large-scale river restoration project, several types of field data were collected from two gravel-bed reaches of the regulated lower Merced River in California's Central Valley, primarily in the fall of 2016. These data sets were intended to characterize salmon spawning habitat and identify factors influencing spawning site selection. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) Bulk samples of streambed sediment used to characterize the subsurface grain size distribution. 2) Pebble counts used to characterize the sediment grain size distribution of the bed surface. 3) Force gage measurements used to parameterize a...

Evaluating technologies and approaches to identify the movement of fine sediment over coarser substrate has implications for monitoring the condition of habitat restoration sites. This goal motivated testing the efficacy of Fiber Optic Distributed Temperature Sensing (FO-DTS) as a technique for detecting the migration of sand bedforms over coarser bed material. Experiments were conducted in a laboratory flume at the USGS Geomorphology and Sediment Transport Laboratory (GSTL) in Golden, Colorado. An approximately 20-meter length of fiber optic cable was placed in the flume. The first 5 meter segment of cable was buried in approximately 5 centimeters of gravel substrate and extended from the upstream (top) to the...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. The National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) is a feature-based database that interconnects and uniquely identifies the stream segments or reaches that make up the nation's surface water drainage system. NHD data was originally developed at 1:100,000 scale and exists at that scale for the whole country. High resolution NHD adds detail to the original 1:100,000-scale NHD. (Data for Alaska, Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands was developed...

This data set includes 1 km resolution monthly timescale estimates of the effective recharge component of the water budget over the time period from October 2003 - December 2015. These estimates were developed as water budget residuals using previously published data sets for other water budget components: PRISM precipitation (Daly et al., 2008), SNODAS snow water equivalent (National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center, 2004), SSEBop-WB evapotranspiration (Reitz et al., 2017a), a map of groundwater-sourced irrigation (Reitz et al., 2017b), and monthly surface runoff maps (Reitz et al., 2019). The recharge data were estimated as the difference between water supply (precipitation plus snow melt plus irrigation)...

This is a combined dataset from the USGS Orphaned Well Dataset (Grove and Merrill, 2022) and publicly available data from the USGS National Water Information System, NWIS, obtained via the Water Quality Portal using the USGS Python dataretrieval library. This dataset is composed of water quality measurements from groundwater sites located within 1 mile of the locations of unplugged orphaned wells listed in the United States Documented Unplugged Orphaned Oil and Gas Well Dataset. This dataset contains measurements of common water quality parameter (pH, temperature, specific conductance, TDS), dissolved light hydrocarbons and their isotopes (Methane, δ13C in methane, δ2H in methane, ethane, δ13C in ethane, propane,...

Bulk samples of streambed sediment were collected from two reaches of the lower Merced River in California's Central Valley to support research intended to evaluate the extent to which large-scale restoration projects provided improved salmon spawning habitat. A related goal of this study was to improve our understanding of the geomorphic factors influencing spawning site selection by salmon. The bulk samples were acquired during the summer of 2016 at the Merced River Ranch and Robinson Reach field sites using a McNeil sampler [McNeil and Ahnell, 1964]. Before collecting each sample, the surface layer was removed to avoid including surface grains as part of the sample. Surface material was scraped off to a depth...

The U.S Geological Survey conducted hydrographic surveys from July 23-25, 2018 to monitor fish spawning substrate placements (reefs) in the Detroit and St. Clair Rivers, Michigan. A multibeam echosounder was used from the Great Lakes Science Center research vessel Cisco to collect hydrographic data. These data were used to generate maps of river bottom topography in locations where spawning substrates have been placed. Reefs that had been constructed at the time of survey in the Detroit River included: Fighting Island, Fort Wayne, New (East) Belle Isle, Belle Isle, and Grassy Island. The reefs constructed in the St. Clair River at the time of survey included: Middle Channel, Pointe aux Chenes, and Harts Light.
