Data were collected on plant abundance in Illinois with the goal of determining correlations between the abundance of dominant plant taxa and other plant species.

Data were collected on seed production dynamics of long-lived plants, reproductive plant traits of those plant species, and weather variability for sites where those species live. Data include the coefficient of variation in seed production over time, the variation (coefficient of variation or standard deviation) in weather over years, and reproductive traits such as pollination mode and seed dispersal mechanism. Data series were distributed globally and encompass 920 data series containing 311 plant species. Data series are all 6 or more years in length.

Data were collected on the abundance of plants in a 10-year weeding experiment of garlic mustard, located at Trillium Trails Park in Pennsylvania. Garlic mustard was weeded annually to suppress its abundance, and the impacts of garlic mustard were measured based on the response of the plant community to garlic mustard weeding. Because garlic mustard is known to suppress mycorrhizal fungi, the mycorrhizal status of each plant species was determined and recorded. The experiment was arranged in a blocked design, where plots had subareas with and without garlic mustard removal. Cover of each plant species was measured as the average percent cover recorded in 18 2x2 meter quadrats with garlic mustard removed per plot...

Gall abundance and biomass was recorded on marked valley oak and blue oak individuals throughout California. Galls, mostly caused by cynipid gall wasps, were identified to species. Sampling effort per tree was recorded as the number of leaves searched for gall wasps. Leaves were taken from two branches per tree using pole pruners, and total galls per tree were summed in each observation. Annual observations of galls on each tree were made from 2000-2006.

We developed habitat suitability models for three invasive plant species: stiltgrass (Microstegium vimineum), sericea lespedeza (Lespedeza cuneata), and privet (Ligustrum sinense). We applied the modeling workflow developed in Young et al. 2020, developing similar models for occurrence data, but also models trained using species locations with percent cover ≥10%, ≥25%, and ≥50%. We chose predictors from a national library of environmental variables known to physiologically limit plant distributions (Engelstad et al. 2022 Table S1) and relied on human input based on natural history knowledge to further narrow the variable set for each species before developing habitat suitability models. We developed models using...

A pollen addition experiment was conducted on the leaves of Croton setiger, a Californian forb. Pollen was added to leaves of randomly selected plants, and control plants had no pollen added. Over 2013 and 2014 the number of predatory and herbivorous insects were counted on each plant, and the number of damaged leaves and plant size were measured.

We developed habitat suitability models for invasive plant species selected by Department of Interior land management agencies. We applied the modeling workflow developed in Young et al. 2020 to species not included in the original case studies. Our methodology balanced trade-offs between developing highly customized models for a few species versus fitting non-specific and generic models for numerous species. We developed a national library of environmental variables known to physiologically limit plant distributions (Engelstad et al. 2022 Table S1: https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0263056) and relied on human input based on natural history knowledge to further narrow the variable set for each species before...

We calculated estimates describing interannual variation in seed production for series of long-term seed or fruit production in 219 plant species. For each plant species, we compiled estimates of foliar nutrient concentrations as well as productivity and weather at the site of observation. Data was compiled in order to test whether interannual variation in seed production was greater in species with lower foliar nutrient concentrations or greater nutrient imbalances.

A greenhouse experiment was conducted to test the ability of the invasive clonal plant, Lepidium draba, to cope with damage to local and different ramets. The experiment was arranged in a fully factorial split-pot design that was blocked by bench position and provenance population of the plant. Plants were grown in 'split pots', where two adjoining pots were glued together with a small opening for a lateral root to pass through. A plant with a long lateral root was placed such that one ramet was in one pot, and a connected ramet was in the adjoining pot. One ramet was randomly assigned as the 'local' ramet and the other was assigned as the 'neighbor' ramet. Three treatments were applied in a fully factorial manner:...
Data were collected from an experimental greenhouse study in which Lepidium draba plants were grown from root cuttings to create plants at different ontogenic stages. Plants were arranged in mixed-age and single-age stands and exposed to the Lepidopteran herbivore, diamondback moth caterpillars. The success (biomass gain and surivival) of herbivores, the amount of feeding, and the growth of plants were recorded as responses to ontogenic stage. In addition, glucosinolates (a group of secondary metabolites known to act as defenses against herbivores) were quantified on plants of differing ontogenic stage.
Compiled 1086 datasets of plant seed production spanning 1900-2013 and from around the world were binned into 2-decade periods for which CV (coefficient of variation) of seed set was calculated. Skewness, dip test, mean, and kurtosis were calculated for the same periods.

Data were compiled on the seed production of white spruce in order to assess the long-term trends in seed production over the past 60 years in North American boreal forests. Data on cone production was merged with annual weather, teleconnection indices such as ENSO, and historical fires in boreal forests.

Monthly measurements of milkweed stems were made in 2013 at Hastings Natural History Reservation. At the same time, arthropod communities were measured associated with each milkweed stem. Treatments were conducted in which a subset of milkweed stems were damaged each month.

This is a dataset of locations and population genetic information based on microsatellite analysis of rusty patched bumble bee (Bombus affinis). Data were collected over the course of two years (2020 and 2021), and genetic analysis took place in 2022.
