The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (SWRCB) compiled and digitized mud logs from oil and gas wells in the Oxnard Oil Field area. Scanned copies of the mud logs were downloaded from the California Geologic Energy Management Division (CalGEM) online data and were digitized. Thirteen available mud logs associated with the Pliocene Tar Sand pool code (Vaca Tar Sand) were digitized. Mud-logging technology (mud logs) allows for identification and relative concentration measurement in parts per million by volume (ppmv) of light hydrocarbon gases (methane through pentane) occurring in drilling mud returned to the surface throughout the drilling process...

This dataset identifies the number of individually-owned domestic wells, and the number of households relying upon domestic water supply in the state of California. The number of wells and households are summarized for each Public Land Survey System (PLSS) section. The well locations were determined from more than 635,000 scanned well-completion reports (WCRs) provided by the California Department of Water Resources in 2011. This is only a partial sample of the total number of WCRs (estimated at 1 to 2 million in total). The number of domestic wells was estimated based upon a spatially distributed and randomized survey that determined the Township Ratio (TR) for each township in the state (4,692 in total). Each...

This data set provides the supporting data for the publication "What Makes a First Magnitude Sping?--Global Uncertainty Analysis of a Speleogenesis Model to Gain Insight into Karst Spring Genesis". This publication documents a speleogenesis model that was used to generate karst networks. Morris Method Global Sensitivity Analysis (MM-GSA) is used to efficiently sample input parameters to define a potential karst network. The MM-GSA provides information about sensitivity of hydrologic and transport response metrics (e.g., peak flows, peak timing, mass flux) to evaluated input parameters (e.g. network density, proto-conduit length distribution). There were 390 models in the analysis, therefore one replicate is provided...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in cooperation with the California State Water Resources Control Board (Water Board) collected produced water and casing gas samples from petroleum wells and other oil-field sites in selected oil fields in the southern San Joaquin Valley in Kern County in 2016 and 2017. The samples were collected as part of the Water Boards Regional Groundwater Monitoring Program (RMP) of Water Quality in Areas of Oil and Gas Production. Samples included produced water and casing gas collected from oil wells, produced water collected from surface produced water disposal ponds, and injectate stored in tanks planned for underground injection. Samples were collected from the Fruitvale oil field on...

There are more than 42,000 entries in the USGS Mineral Resources Data System (MRDS) for the State of California. Previously, the field for deposit type was sparsely populated, which made it difficult to evaluate mine sites needing environmental remediation. This has been rectified by populating the deposit type field using 100 deposit types cited in previous USGS publications, and 137 provisional deposit types described here. Other categories listed in the deposit type field include 29 types of mineral processing facilities, 6 miscellaneous categories used previously in MRDS, and 56 unclassified categories tied to primary commodity. References are provided for each deposit type, as available, including descriptive...

As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a newly drilled monitoring well site near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Measurements and observations are presented for cores from an initial drilling attempt (site ESW2A), which stopped at 85 feet below land surface due to equipment issues, and data are presented for cores from the successful drilling attempt (ESW2B) down to 240 feet below land surface. The two core sites are located approximately 6 feet from each other. Data measured on core material included...

Hi-Desert Water District (HDWD) is constructing a wastewater treatment plant as part of a groundwater replenishment and reuse project (GRRP) in the east hydrogeologic unit (Nishikawa, and others, 2003) of the Warren Valley Basin (7-012) (California Department of Water Resources, 2016) in Yucca Valley, CA. The HDWD plans to use reclaimed wastewater for managed aquifer recharge by spreading treated wastewater into unlined ponds at the GRRP facility. Reclaimed wastewater will percolate through the unsaturated alluvium by gravity drainage through the unsaturated zone to the water table located about 370 feet (ft) below land surface (bls). As part of the cooperative efforts between the HDWD and the USGS, the electrical...

A three-dimensional extreme gradient boosting (XGB) machine learning model was developed to predict the distribution of nitrate in groundwater across the conterminous United States (CONUS). Nitrate was predicted at a 1-square-kilometer (km) resolution for two drinking water zones, each of variable depth, one for domestic supply and one for public supply. The model used measured nitrate concentrations from 12,082 wells, and included predictor variables representing well characteristics, hydrologic conditions, soil type, geology, land use, climate, and nitrogen inputs. Predictor variables derived from empirical or numerical process-based models were also included to integrate information on controlling processes and...
