As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Cores were continuous from land surface down to 240 feet below land surface and were drilled by consultants to EPA using sonic rotary–a fluidless drilling technique. Data on this page consist of: 1) field drilling notes from USGS and consultants to EPA (GeoSystems Analysis, Inc., Tucson, Arizona); 2) field descriptions of core lithology–including grain size, sorting, color, mineralogy,...

As part of a larger groundwater research study conducted at the U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), located approximately 35 miles north-northeast of Barstow, California, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the U.S. Army, and the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) have cooperated to evaluate unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from the borehole for a newly drilled monitoring well (ESW2B). Specific horizons of interest were identified and selected for detailed grain-size distribution analysis using the Fritsch Analysette A28 Image Sizer (particle analyzer) located at the USGS California Water Science Center (CAWSC) in San Diego, CA. The particle analyzer identified circularity and...

The U.S. Army Fort Irwin National Training Center (NTC), approximately 35 miles north-northeast of Barstow, California, obtains all of its potable water supply from three groundwater basins (Irwin, Langford, and Bicycle Basins) within the NTC boundaries. In these basins, groundwater withdrawals exceed natural recharge, resulting in water-level declines. However, managed aquifer recharge using recycled water (treated wastewater) has offset water-level declines in Irwin Basin. Additionally, localized water-quality changes have occurred in some parts of Irwin Basin as a result of human activities (for example, wastewater disposal practices, landscape irrigation, and (or) leaking pipes). As part of a research study...

This data release contains digital data generated by the U.S. Geological Survey under cooperative agreements with Sonoma County Water Agency and the California State Water Resources Control Board to characterize the three-dimensional hydrogeology and water quality of the Russian River Watershed, located in the northern part of the California Coast Ranges section of the Pacific Border province. This dataset contains borehole lithologic and hydrologic data, geospatial data of a three-dimensional hydrogeologic framework model (3D HFM), and gravity data used to support development of the framework model. The borehole dataset is released as a series of .csv ascii files including (1) individual borehole location and construction...

The San Antonio Creek Valley watershed (SACVW) is located in western Santa Barbara County about 15 miles (mi) south of Santa Maria, California and 55 mi north of Santa Barbara, California. The SACVW, is about 140 square miles and encompasses the San Antonio Creek Valley groundwater basin. Since the late 1800s, groundwater has been the primary source of water for agricultural, military, municipal, and domestic uses. Groundwater withdrawal from pumping has exceeded the amount of water replenishing the basin, causing groundwater declines of more than 150 feet in parts of the valley between 1947 and 2018, and reducing base flow in San Antonio Creek at the western end of the SACVW. Agricultural water use (primarily for...

The Cahuilla Valley and Terwilliger Valley groundwater basins, 9-006 and 7-026 respectively (California Department of Water Resources 2016) located approximately 25 miles southwest of Palm Springs, are the sole-source for groundwater supply for the rural disadvantaged community and two Native American Tribes, the Ramona Band of Cahuilla and the Cahuilla. The characteristics and sustainable yield of the Cahuilla Valley and Terwilliger Valley groundwater basins are not well understood and are threatened by increasing water use and potential changes in water sustainability related to climate change. Previous USGS studies of the Cahuilla-Terwilliger Valley groundwater basins defined the thicknesses and characteristics...

Data were collected to help define hydrologic controls on groundwater movement as part of a U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) study on background concentrations of hexavalent chromium in groundwater aquifers near Hinkley, California. Most data associated with the background study are available through the National Water Information System (NWIS) website, and GeoLog Locator. This product is intended to publish data that cannot be released through NWIS and GeoLog. These data include: (1) pneumatic and physical slug tests done by USGS personnel; (2) cone penetration test data collected under contract to, and reported by, Pacific Gas and Electric (PG&E); and (3) water levels in selected wells measured by consultants to...

As part of a research study in cooperation with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Army at Fort Irwin National Training Center, the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) evaluated unsaturated zone soil property data of cores from a newly drilled monitoring well site near a dry well and Four-plex baseball field. Measurements and observations are presented for cores from an initial drilling attempt (site ESW2A), which stopped at 85 feet below land surface due to equipment issues, and data are presented for cores from the successful drilling attempt (ESW2B) down to 240 feet below land surface. The two core sites are located approximately 6 feet from each other. Data measured on core material included...
