Floodplain data from the Hoh, Elwha, Queets, and Quinault Rivers in Olympic National Park, 1939-2013
Floodplain characteristics were quantified for four rivers in Olympic National Park, Washington, USA, using orthophoto imagery taken between 1939-2013.
The Fuels Guide and Database for Big Sagebrush Ecological Sites was developed as part of the Joint Fire Sciences Program project "Quantifying and predicting fuels and the effects of reduction treatments along successional and invasion gradients in sagebrush habitats" (Shinneman and others, 2015). The research was carried out by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center and Boise State University researchers, in partnership with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management and the Idaho Army National Guard. Most of the research for the project focused on the Morley Nelson Snake River Birds of Prey National Conservation Area (hereafter the NCA) in southern Idaho. Sagebrush shrublands in...
The dataset includes the bird species, sex, mercury concentration in breast feathers and whole blood, and the composite measure of fluctuating asymmetry. Statistical models were developed for each species to analyze the relationship between mercury exposure in either breast feathers or whole blood and the composite measure of fluctuating asymmetry, while accounting for the sex of each bird.
The dataset includes specifics on fragments of bullets recovered from shot Belding's ground squirrels from Oregon and California. Ground squirrels were radiographed and then we used ImageJ software to count and measure the area of those bullet fragments. A subset of shot carcasses were then digested and bullet fragments were recovered. Statistical models were developed to predict either the number or mass of bullet fragments in shot ground squirrel carcasses using the radiograph estimates and the digested recovered fragment data.

***This data set is superseded by Welty, J.L., and Jeffries, M.I., 2020, Combined wildfire datasets for the United States and certain territories, 1878-2019: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P9Z2VVRT.*** The increase in wildfires, particularly in the western U.S., represents one of the greatest threats to multiple native ecosystems. Despite this threat, there is currently no central repository to store both past and current wildfire perimeter data. Currently, wildfire boundaries can only be found in disparate local or national datasets. These datasets are generally restricted to specific locations, fire sizes, or time periods. Our first objective was to create a comprehensive national...
Agricultural land cover in the study area for the conservation assessment of Greater Sage-grouse conducted by the Western Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies. This dataset was developed from Sagestitch, an Eastern Washington Shrubsteppe Mapping Project, several state-level Gap Analysis Program (GAP) land cover products (AZ, CA, NM, OR, and WA), National Land Cover Data (NLCD) (ND,SD,NE), and the Prairie Farm Rehabilitation Administration (PFRA) Generalized Landcover (Alberta, Saskatchewan).
This dataset consists of the microsatellite genotypes, collection data, and ownership data for 1461 specimens of Bombus occidentalis. The dataset includes both recognized subspecies, Bombus occidentalis occidentalis and Bombus occidentals mckayi. The subspecies have since been elevated to species status and are currently described as Bombus occidentalis and Bombus mckayi. The specimens were collected from across the historical species range primarily between 1960 and 2020, with few specimens from earlier than 1960 and the oldest from 1904. The specimens are owned and housed by 10 different institutions, which is noted for each specimen.

eDNA-based spatiotemporal distribution data (occupancy model format) for rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss) and bull trout (Salvelinus confluentus) within the Bruneau-Jarbidge Rivers Wilderness in southern Idaho and northern Nevada, USA. Data also include stream discharge and stream temperature data for each site. All data were collected between October 2015 and September 2016.
This data set contains mark-recapture information for individuals of Dicamptodon tenebrosus and Ascaphus truei marked for individual recognition. Amphibians represented in this data set were captured in 14 first-order perennial and seasonally intermittent streams in the East Fork of the South Fork of the Trask River in the northern Oregon Coast Range. Individuals are larval and mature aquatic Dicamptodon tenebrosus and larval Ascaphus truei. Of the Ascaphus truei larvae only individuals thought to be in their first summer when first captured are included (these are individuals whose knees had yet to emerge from under the anal flap or fold).

This dataset includes anticoagulant rodenticide (AR) screening results of 40 Barred Owls (Strix varia) collected in forested landscapes of Washington and Oregon from 2015-2017. Liver tissue was collected from each owl and screened for exposure to eight AR compounds, including 4 first-generation ARs (warfarin, diphacinone, chlorophacinone, and coumachlor), and 4 second-generation ARs (brodifacoum, bromadionlone, difethialone, and difenacoum). Additionally, this dataset includes geographic, temporal, environmental, and biological attributes of individual owls that were identified as potential sources of variation in AR exposure and/or useful measurements for assessing AR exposure risk of sympatric northern spotted...
From 2013-16 we deployed 3 motion-sensing cameras paired with hair (DNA)-snaring devices within each of 263 24-square kilometer primary sampling units distributed systematically across the Olympic Peninsula in northwestern Washington. The data set contains detection histories of fishers during each of 3 14-day sampling intervals at each hexagon. The data set also includes detectability and environmental covariates measured at the detection stations and within a 1,262-m buffer inscribed around the detection stations in each hexagon. Reported covariates include the sampling year, Julian date of sampling visit, proportion of 14-day sampling intervals that bait was functional, landscape composition within buffer regions,...

The dataset includes several variables sampled across burned and unburned sagebrush communities located in a ~30 square kilometer portion of the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion in eastern Washington, USA. The study area is characterized by landforms interspersed at fine-scales, representative of the channeled scabland topography of the region (Baker 2009), including: “mounds,” which are dome-like micro-topographic features, typically 1-2 m in height and ~2 m to 25 m in mean diameter, with relatively deep, well-drained loess soils; and surrounding “flats,” with rocky, thin-soils over basaltic bedrock. Unburned mounds are typically dominated by big sagebrush (A. tridentata) and flats by scabland sagebrush (A. rigida) communities....

Comma-separated values (.csv) file containing data related to mercury in smallmouth bass (Micropterus dolomieu) collected from the Snake River, USA.
Remote camera stations were set up in Oregon Caves National Monument and Preserve from February through April 2017 to document occurrence of mesocarnivores and other wildlife. Fifteen cameras were set up at four primary sampling units (clusters of three to four cameras) throughout the park. Random locations for primary sampling units were chosen using a 3-km sampling grid over the park area. The dataset contains all species observed within the study time-frame, the date and time of observation and the number of individuals detected as well as identification for individual locations, cameras and images. Of the three target species of conservation concern (Pacific fisher (Pekania pennanti), Pacific marten (Martes...

Prior to removal of pest species from an area, resource managers must determine if re-immigration from another population is possible. Voles inhabiting Saddle Rock on the southern Oregon coast are suspected to be partially responsible for declines in the Leach's storm petrel colony on the island. The island is very close to the mainland, and it is potentially accessible during below-average low tides. USGS scientists Mark Miller and Susan Haig and colleagues used genetic techniques to assess island vole population connectivity.

Heat load, a unitless value from 0 (low incident radiation) to around 1 (high incident radiation), is calculated using aspect, slope, and latitude (McCune and Dylan 2002). For the purposes of the exploration tool, the data are binned into 6 classes using Geometric Interval. Classes range from very low to very high and are designed to allow the classification of a polygon into its heat load types. McCune, B. and Keon, D., 2002, Equations for potential annual direct incident radiation and heat load: Journal of Vegetation Science, v. 13, no. 4, p. 603-606, https://doi.org/10.1111/j.1654-1103.2002.tb02087.x.
