The American eel (Anguilla rostrata) is an imperiled fish hypothesized to use conspecific cues, in part, to coordinate long distance migration during their multi-stage life history. Here, tissues from multiple American eel life stages were collected and analyzed for the presence and concentration of bile acids. Specifically, samples were collected in the Northern Appalachian Research Laboratory during June 2016 from yellow eel liver, intestine, and gall bladder. Adult walleye were caught in Fox River (Wisconsin) during April 2014. Age-0 walleye were caught in Fox River during October 2014. Total length, weight, age, and proportion of weight represented by water were determined for each of the walleye. Whole-fish homogenates were prepared during 2014-2015 and during 2017. Total mercury (HgT) concentration, methylmercury (MeHg) concentration, and mercury (Hg) isotope ratios were determined in the homogenates during 2014-2015 and during 2017-2018. All mercury determinations were made at the USGS Mercury Research Laboratory in Middleton, Wisconsin.

Diet analyses were performed on juvenile lake trout (Salvelinus namaycush) captured by bottom trawl during annual USGS Great Lakes Science Center demersal fish community surveys in mid-October to mid-November 2008–2017 in Lake Huron. This dataset contains lake trout capture information (e.g., location, depth) and diet item data (taxa consumed and their associated lengths).

Image and biometric data were collected for 22 species of fish from Great Lakes Tributaries in Michigan and Ohio, and the Illinois River for the purpose of developing a fish identification classifier. Data consists of a comma delimited spreadsheet that identifies image file names and associated fish identification number, common name, species code, family name, genus, and species, date collected, river from which each fish was collected, location of sampling, fish fork length in millimeters, girth in millimeters, weight in kilograms, and personnel involved with image collection. Biometric data are saved as .csv comma delimited format and image files are saved as .png file type.
These data include survival information for Cisco in the laboratory for up to 30 days after surgical implantation of two different sizes of Lotek acoustic tags. Three-hundred fish of a range of sizes were used for the implantation and controls of this experiment, which was repeated three time. Ancillary data of surgical condition, recovery, and time until death or tag expulsion were also recorded, as well as sizes at beginning and end of observation period and estimated growth.

An acoustic telemetry receiver was mounted on a gliding robotic fish, a novel type of autonomous underwater vehicle (AUV) during a series of field trials in a freshwater lake. Like underwater gliders, gliding robotic fish (dubbed GRACE, for Gliding-Robot-ACE) achieve locomotion primarily through buoyancy-driven gliding or spiraling. They are also equipped with an active tail fin that can provide extra propulsion (e.g., “swimming” against current), act as a rudder to improve steering during glide/spiral, and improve maneuverability via asymmetrical flapping (e.g., tight turns on the surface or during gliding). This dataset is part of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Great Lakes Coastal Wetland Restoration Assessment (GLCWRA) initiative. These data represent the location of dikes within the Upper Peninsula Restoration Assessment (UPRA) study area. An ArcGIS model (Python script) identified dikes as having a difference in elevation above a certain threshold. If the elevation difference was below a certain threshold, the area was not considered a dike. However, if the difference in elevation between two points was significantly high, then the area was marked as a dike. Areas continuous with each other were considered part of the same dike. The erosion and active transport of legacy mine tailings (called “stamp sands”) are impacting native fish species and aquatic habitats on a shallow water rocky reef complex along the Keweenaw Peninsula of Michigan called Buffalo Reef. Stamp sands are spreading from an old mill site at the Town of Gay and settling on the reef. Multiple surveys have documented the underwater migration of toxic, metal-rich stamp sands and progressive burial of areas of hard/complex lakefloor, such as cobble fields. The finer-grained, muddy fraction of the mine tailings has been winnowed by waves and currents and transported to unknown locations in deeper waters offshore. This dataset is the first installment of a yearly connectivity update for forested habitat within the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative's (GLRI) Terrestrial Habitats & Connectivity (TH&C) work group's Pilot Area. The Pilot Area is a region of the northern Great Lakes Basin between Ashland, WI and the Keweenaw Peninsula and is bounded by Lake Superior in the north and the basin boundary in the south, including a 70 km buffer. Data were collected in August and September 2015 for analysis of bacteria communities of the Grand Calumet River and associated shorelines. Water samples were collected on three occasions corresponding to one rain-related (wet) events and two non-rain (dry) events. This data set contains bottom hardness and surficial substrate compositions measured as part of a study evaluating the maturation of fish spawning reef restoration projects in the St. Clair-Detroit River System. Impacts of dreissenid mussels (Dreissena spp.) on Great Lakes ecosystems are well documented, and a better understanding of mechanisms that cause variation in mussel abundance is needed. An outstanding question is how much mussel biomass is consumed by fish predation. This is a tabular data set that contains morphological and experimental data for a study testing if silver stage American eel respond to each other's odor. Inside a laboratory flume, downstream-swimming eels were exposed to both live (putative attractant) and dead (putative repellent) conspecific washings to determine whether their trajectory of downstream movement, level of activity, or time spent inside targeted areas of the arena changed after exposure. The USGS Lake Erie Biological Station’s East Harbor sampling program began in 1961 with the commissioning of the research vessel Musky II. It is the longest known continuous trawl survey in Lake Erie. In addition to spanning over 50 years, the data series is unique for three prominent design elements: 1) sampling was conducted at three depth strata; 2) replicate trawl samples were collected at each depth stratum; and 3) sampling was conducted during both day and night. Data are from biological and physical environmental assessments conducted during 2019 in the Maumee River, Ohio. Sites were located from river kilometer 24 to 11. Water quality parameters, fishes, invertebrates, and river channel characteristics were assessed during 2019 from May-September. Previously established standardized sampling methods were used during all assessments.
Assessing the distribution and abundance of both predator and prey (forage) fish species is a cornerstone of ecosystem-based fishery management, and supports decision making that considers food-web interactions. In support of binational Great Lakes fishery management the objectives of this survey were to: provide estimates of densities of key forage and predator species in the western basin of Lake Erie, to assess seasonal and spatial distributions of fishes in tandem with water quality information, and to assess year class strength.
