The U.S. Geological Survey collected groundwater samples from 48 grid wells and 11 understanding wells screened in aquifers used for domestic supply in San Bernardino County, California, in 2018. The sites were sampled for the Mojave Basin (MOBS) Shallow Aquifer Study Unit of the California State Water Resources Control Board Groundwater Ambient Monitoring and Assessment (GAMA) Program Priority Basin Project’s assessment of the quality of groundwater resources used for domestic and small system drinking water supplies. The MOBS study unit covered the Upper, Middle, and Lower Mojave River groundwater basins, El Mirage groundwater basin, and part of the Harper Valley groundwater basin [California Department of Water...

This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for Chesapeake Bay. Metrics for resiliency, including unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, and tidal range are calculated for smaller units delineated from a digital elevation model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. The U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing federal, state, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and ecosystem service potential of these wetlands. For this purpose, the response and resilience of coastal wetlands to physical factors...

This layer represents Private Conservation Lands from the Protected Areas Database of the US (PADUS). Part of the GAP Analysis, PADUS is a geodatabase that illustrates and describes public land ownership, managment and consercationlands nationally. The lands included are assigned conservation measures that qualify thier intent to mangae lands for the presercation of biological diversity and to other natural, recreational, and cultural uses.
A geometric multigrid solver (GMG), based in the preconditioned conjugate gradient algorithm, has been developed for solving systems of equations resulting from applying the cell-centered finite difference algorithm to flow in porous media. This solver has been adapted to the U.S. Geological Survey ground-water flow model MODFLOW-2000. The documentation herein is a description of the solver and the adaptation to MODFLOW-2000.

ASTER is capable of collecting in-track stereo using nadir- and aft-looking near infrared cameras. Since 2001, these stereo pairs have been used to produce single-scene (60- x 60-kilomenter (km)) digital elevation models (DEM) having vertical (root-mean-squared-error) accuracies generally between 10- and 25-meters (m). The methodology used by Japan's Sensor Information Laboratory Corporation (SILC) to produce the ASTER GDEM involves automated processing of the entire ASTER Level-1A archive. Stereo-correlation is used to produce over one million individual scene-based ASTER DEMs, to which cloud masking is applied to remove cloudy pixels. All cloud-screened DEMS are stacked and residual bad values and outliers...

Chemically intensive crop production depletes wildlife food resources, hinders animal development, health, survival, and reproduction, and it suppresses wildlife immune systems, facilitating emergence of infectious diseases with excessive mortality rates. Gut microbiota is crucial for wildlife’s response to environmental stressors. Its composition and functionality are sensitive to diet changes and environmental pollution associated with modern crop production. In the study entitled Exposure to crop production alters cecal prokaryotic microbiota, inflates virulome and resistome in wild prairie grouse we use shotgun metagenomics to demonstrate that exposure to modern crop production detrimentally affects cecal...

Data for groundwater-levels measured in 616 wells during water year 2020 (November 2019-June 2020) by the United States Geological Survey (USGS), the Mojave Water Agency (MWA), and other local water districts were compiled to construct a regional water-table shapefile for 2020. The regional water-table shapefile shows the elevation of the water table in and around the Mojave River and Morongo areas, in San Bernardino County, California.

To examine potential influence of tributaries on riparian habitat complexity along ~216 km of the Colorado River in Utah and ~300km of the Dolores River in Colorado and Utah, we first classified fluvial features and land cover of the bottomland on remotely sensed imagery. We then examined riparian and geomorphic patterns within the near channel zone with variably-sized spatial units. We used supervised image classification to create a 2-m resolution map of the primary land cover types within bottomlands of the Colorado and Dolores rivers, including two anthropogenic classes, four vegetation classes, bare ground, water and shadow. We selected these cover classes as major vegetation and land cover types that could...

This digital dataset release of the La Junta, Colorado and Kansas quadrangle is composed of previously published elevation contours, structure contours on the limits of the Morrison, Dakota, and Purgatorie Formations, and geologic formational data. The digitizing of this map is to provide a more accessible dataset to be available for public usage. The original dataset was part of an eight-part series of maps in Colorado and Kansas, this map modified in part by reconnaissance by G.R. Scott in 1968. The entirety of this dataset includes both spatial and non-spatial data held in a singular, GeMS compliant geodatabase. This geodatabase includes a geologic map, geologic map feature class holding contact and fault lines,...

Orthophotos combine the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map. The primary digital orthophotoquad (DOQ) is a 1-meter ground resolution, quarter-quadrangle (3.75-minutes of latitude by 3.75-minutes of longitude) image cast on the Universal Transverse Mercator Projection (UTM) on the North American Datum of 1983 (NAD83).The geographic extent of the DOQ is equivalent to a quarter-quad plus The overedge ranges a minimum of 50 meters to a maximum of 300 meters beyond the extremes of the primary and secondary corner points. The overedge is included to facilitate tonal matching for mosaicking and for the placement of the NAD83 and secondary datum corner ticks. The normal orientation...

This child data release includes RGB (red-green-blue) videos acquired from an Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) during a tracer experiment performed on the Missouri River near Columbia, Missouri, on May 5, 2021. One of the primary goals of this tracer experiment was to assess the feasibility of inferring concentrations of a visible dye (Rhodamine WT) from various types of remotely sensed data in a large, highly turbid natural river channel. Previous research on remote sensing of tracer dye concentrations has focused on clear-flowing streams, but the Missouri River is much more turbid. As a result, the effect of the dye on the reflectance of the water could be obscured by the effects of suspended sediment on reflectance....

Field measurements of flow velocity were acquired from a reach of the Salcha River in Alaska, August 31, 2018, to support research on estimating surface flow velocities from remotely sensed data via particle image velocimetry (PIV). The velocity measurements included in this data release were obtained using a TRDI RiverRay acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADCP) deployed from a boat with an outboard motor. This data release provides depth-averaged flow velocities derived from the raw ADCP data using the TRDI WinRiver II processing software. The spatial location of each velocity measurement was obtained using a differential GPS included as part of the RiverRay instrument package. The map projection and datum...

This data release consists of a sequence of optical images extracted from a high frame rate video and used to derive remotely sensed estimates of surface flow velocity via particle image velocimetry (PIV). These data were acquired from the Tanana River near Nenana, Alaska, on July 24, 2019, along with field measurements of flow velocity used to assess the accuracy of image-derived velocity estimates. The images were obtained using a Zenmuse X5 video camera deployed within a Meeker mount attached to the nose of a Robinson R44 helicopter. The original video was recorded at 30 frames per second while the helicopter hovered in a fixed location approximately 600 m above the river, but the image sequence was extracted...
