The Wetland Reserve Program (WRP) is a voluntary program administered by the NRCS. It provides technical and financial assistance to private landowners and Tribes to restore, protect, and enhance wetlands in exchange for retiring eligible land from agriculture. Digital datasets were used to develop basin characteristics values that are used in multiple regression equations and tested for the use in predicting flow-duration curves (FDCs) in ungaged areas of Indiana. Several basin characteristics are easily derived from StreamStats basin delineations, such as basin area (https://streamstats.usgs.gov/ss/). Other basin characteristics require ancillary datasets as input. The data provided through this data release are those data that have been collected, tested, and ultimately selected as a basis for FDC development. The development and the generation of the datasets that are published through this data release, were based on the results and findings of the report mentioned here: Kim, M.H., 2018, Flood-inundation maps for the Wabash River at Lafayette, Indiana: U.S. Geological Survey Scientific Investigations Report 2018–5017, 10 p., https://doi.org/10.3133/sir20185017. The model archive dataset contains all relevant files to document and re-run the surface-water (SW) hydraulic model that is discussed in the report.

Potential wetland extents were estimated for 12 river reaches covering approximately 750 river miles in Indiana. The study was completed by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS). This study follows and adds to the work completed in the pilot study (Kim and others, 2012) and shows that potential wetland extents can be estimated using streamflow statistics, streamgage data, and flood-inundation mapping techniques.
