To support research on remote sensing of rivers, hyperspectral image data and supporting field measurements of water depth obtained with a multibeam echosounder were acquired from a segment of the Kootenai River in northern Idaho, September 26 and 27, 2017. These data sets also facilitate efforts to characterize in-stream habitat for sturgeon, understand and model dispersion processes, and monitor geomorphic change along the Kootenai River. This parent data release includes links to child pages for the following data sets: 1) airborne hyperspectral image data acquired from a conventional, manned, fixed-wing aircraft; 2) ground-based depth measurements obtained during a multibeam echosounder survey; and 3) in...

The U.S. Geological Survey conducted hydrographic surveys from June 23-24, 2015, to monitor fish spawning substrate placements (reefs) in the Detroit River, Michigan. An interferrometric multibeam echosounder was used from the Great Lakes Science Center research vessel Mayfly to collect maps of river bottom topography in locations where spawning substrates have been placed. In addition, baseline topography was collected at locations where substrates were planned to be introduced. The Fighting Island reef had been constructed at the date of survey. Surveys were also conducted at prospective reef sites: Grassy Island, Fort Wayne and Upstream Belle Isle. This data release includes bathymetric surveys collected from...

The U.S. Geological Survey, in collaboration with the Water Resources University in Hanoi, Vietnam, conducted a bathymetric survey of the junction of the Hong and Luoc Rivers. The survey was carried out in December 2010 using a boat-mounted multibeam echo sounder integrated with a global positioning system. A bathymetric map of the Hong and Luoc River junction was produced which was referenced to the datum of the Trieu Duong tide gage on the Luoc River. This data release contains the data used to produce the bathymetric map.

Benthic invertebrate communities are monitored because the composition of those communities can affect and be affected by the water quality of an aquatic system. Benthic communities use and sometimes regulate the cycling of essential elements (for example, carbon). Benthic invertebrate taxa may also indicate acute and chronic stressors in an environment because they accumulate contaminants and can respond – sometimes dramatically - to oligotrophic and eutrophic conditions. Benthic communities affect water quality by grazing pelagic food resources and increasing the rate of nutrient regeneration through feeding and bioturbating sediments. South San Francisco Bay is a system dependent on phytoplankton as the base...

The U.S. Geological Survey Toxic Substances Hydrology Program at Cape Cod has been investigating the fate and transport of a treated-wastewater, groundwater contaminant plume. A portion of the contaminated groundwater discharges into Ashumet Pond, a kettle hole, freshwater lake. A study was conducted from June 2013 to June 2015 to document transport, transformation, and discharge of dissolved inorganic nitrogen species (DIN; nitrate, nitrite, and nitrous oxide) from the contaminant plume to the lake, across the groundwater-surface water interface. As part of that study, in October 2014, two natural gradient tracer tests were conducted within the lake bed sediments using nitrite as a reactive tracer and bromide as...

The U.S. Geological Survey deployed seven submersible pressure transducers on the bottom of the Salcha River in July 2018. An additional transducer was left out of the water to correct for barometric pressure fluctuations. At the time of deployment, the bank position near each transducer and the water-surface elevation were measured with Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) equipment. The transducers recorded a depth measurement every 15-min until the recovery of five of the seven in October. We adjusted the water elevation measured at deployment by the difference between the depth measured at deployment and each subsequent depth measurement to derive the water-surface elevation at 15-min intervals. The data...

Field measurements of water depth were acquired from a reach of the upper Sacramento River in northern California, September 12-14, 2017, to support research on salmon habitat and geomorphic change along the Sacramento River and, more broadly, remote sensing of rivers. The depth measurements included in this data release were obtained by wading the shallow channel margins with RTK GPS receivers and measuring water surface elevations along the water's edge and bed elevations within the channel; depths were calculated by subtracting bed elevations from the nearest water surface elevation. For the deeper areas representing most of the channel, depths were recorded along a series of cross-sections by a SonTek RiverSurveyor...

Field measurements of various optical properties of the water column were acquired from a reach of the upper Sacramento River in northern California, September 13, 2017, to support research on remote sensing of rivers, particularly estimation of water depth from passive optical image data. The field measurements included in this data release include several parameters measured with three different instruments. A WetLabs EcoTriplet multi-probe was used to measure the volume scattering coefficient (Beta) at 700 nm, the back-scattering coefficient (b_b) at 700 nm, chlorophyll concentration, colored dissolved organic matter (CDOM) concentration, and turbidity. A Sequoia Scientific LISST-100X was used to measure the...

This study focuses on providing a broad-scale assessment of composition of water chemistry in urban stormwater runoff. The stormwater runoff is a source of recharge to groundwater by Green Infrastructure (GI) practices or it may become a source of recharge to groundwater to reduce stormwater volumes to surface waters or augment groundwater supply. The chemical composition of the stormwater runoff is important to understanding the potential impacts of surface water recharge to groundwater. In this study, 21 field sites were sampled for stormwater runoff during 50 storm events from 7/28/2016 through 12/8/2017. Major elements were measured by inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry and trace elements...

The Ankeny, Iowa wastewater treatment facility (WWTF) was decommissioned in November 2013 providing a unique opportunity to characterize the impacts of WWTF discharge on water quality at the surface-water/groundwater interface in a shallow, unconfined alluvial aquifer. The Ankeny WWTF discharged treated effluent for nearly forty years into Fourmile Creek, located in Ankeny, Iowa. Dataset includes site information (Table 1), analytical methods (Table 2), piezometer water level elevations (Table 3), trace and major element concentrations collected from 2011 to 2013 before the WWTF shutdown (Table 4), and trace and major element concentration collected from 2013 to 2014 after the WWTF shutdown (Table 5).

(QSI); QSI also performed all processing of the raw LiDAR data. The data were acquired from fixed wing aircraft and were used to produce tiled point clouds in a .las format and interpolated topo-bathymetric...
