The original time series and cross power data were stored in Binary format on 3.5" disks until further conversion was needed. To convert the time series and cross power data to a format that can be used for modeling, the original binary files were converted to ASCII format using Basic 4.0 code and associated subroutines (see Magnetotelluric_Original-Code_Binary-to-Ascii.txt and Magnetotelluric_Original-Code_Binary-to-Ascii-Subroutines.txt attached to the binary data ScienceBase item). The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Data at Risk (DaR) team partnered with the Forest and Rangeland Ecosystem Science Center (FRESC) to preserve and release a subset of their golden eagle telemetry data. In the 1990’s, researchers from what is now FRESC worked with Boise State University (BSU) and collected telemetry and ground observation data that documented the local and migratory movements and behaviors of golden eagles. This spreadsheet compiles all longitudinal survey data collected along Redwood Creek during the thirty year period, 1977-2007. Long-term surveys were conducted along three reaches of Redwood Creek: Elam to Hayes creek reach, Dolason to Wier (Emerald) creek reach, and Bond to 44 creek reach. Longitudinal streambed surveys follow the channel thalweg (deepest point) and are useful in documenting aquatic habitat conditions (for example, pool depth distribution, percent length in riffles vs pools). Each of these surveys was conducted in the summer months of each recorded year and took about two weeks to complete.

The banding data provides a comprehensive list of where and when each of the 21 golden eagles were captured, tagged (all satellite-tagged, some also radio-tagged) and deployed. The banding data is organized into a spreadsheet (Banding_Records.csv) that provides basic information on each bird as well as any notes about recaptures or deaths. The Capture_Sheets.pdf is a supplemental document that provides more detailed biological and spatiotemporal information about 15 of the tagged individuals. Individual golden eagles can be identified across the three datasets with their unique and consistent PTT numbers.

The satellite data consist of 9,253 estimated locations of 21 golden eagles (Aquila chrysaetos) that were satellite-tagged in either east-central Idaho (Salmon, Idaho) or southwestern Idaho (Snake River National Conservation Area) and tracked between 1993 and 1997 via the Argos satellite system. The raw eagle tracking data provided by Argos were filtered one time using a version of the Douglas Argos-Filter Algorithm and converted into XLS spreadsheet form. This data set compiles all cross-sectional survey data collected along Redwood Creek during the sixty year period, 1953-2013 (note that no surveys were conducted between 1954 and 1972). Cross-sectional surveys are transects perpendicular to channel flow and are used to document sedimentation and erosion (scour and fill) in river channel beds and on streambanks.

The EDI time series and cross power data were converted from ASCII format using Python-based software developed for this preservation project. The data in EDI format can use magnetotelluric interpretation software to produce models of the resistivity of the measured environment. The metadata in the Info section of the EDI files can be used to convert data to SPUD format, another format used for modelling (Wight, 1988).

Of the 21 golden eagles satellite-tagged in Salmon, Idaho and Snake River National Conservation Area, 10 were also radio-tagged with tail-mounted very high frequency (VHF) transmitters to allow for behavioral observations between 1993 and 1994. The observed data were originally processed as a DIF file. The Data at Risk preservation project transformed the original DIF file data into CSV format and created a shapefile from the geospatial points. The observed data shapefile (Observed_Data.shp) provides the 682 estimated locations of the golden eagles and all behavioral observations taken in the field. The Central Mojave Special Features shapefile provides point locations for known or potential places where vegetation alliances or unique stands occurred (from 1997-1999) with less than 5 hectares of spatial extent. These designations were provided separately from the Mojave Vegetation Polygons because the target standard for the polygons was a minimum mapping unit (MMU) of 5 hectares, thus methods used at the time to assign labels precluded mapping these special features as polygons. The special features points are still included because it is important to note the known or potential location of vegetation alliances for future mapping at finer spatial resolution. The Central Mojave Vegetation Polygons shapefile represents areas of the Mojave Desert classified into vegetation classes or alliances representative of the area from 1997-1999. The classification of these areas were derived from context gathered in the field data, photographs and additional satellite imagery that is not included in this data release. The original map coverage was preserved and released as a shapefile (mojave_veg_polygons.shp). In contrast to the Special Features Points vegetation classifications (described in the Special Features Points shapefile metadata record and ScienceBase item), the Central Mojave Vegetation Polygons were designated by vegetation alliances that extended 5 hectares or more....
