In ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa Dougl. ex Laws.) forests of the western USA, fire exclusion by Euro-American settlers facilitated pine invasion of grass openings, increased forest floor detritus, and shifted the disturbance regime toward stand-replacing fires.
