This data release includes raw detrital zircon U-Pb data for isolated sandstones in Upper Triassic deposits of the Auld Lang Syne basin of northwest Nevada, USA. Detrital zircon U-Pb data for 11 sandstone samples (3269 zircon U-Pb dates) were acquired via LA-ICP-MS at the University of Arizona LaserChron Center for 11 sandstone samples. Primary insights from the data are twofold: 1) The data provide information about sediment provenance and indicate that sediment of the Auld Lang Syne basin was primarily derived from near the ancestral Ouachita orogen of Texas and Oklahoma. Sediment was transported to the Auld Lang Syne basin by a Late Triassic transcontinental river system, recorded today by the Upper Triassic...

We have constrained the age of the Nussbaum Gravel at Baculite Mesa, CO using cosmogenic Al-26/Be-10 isochron burial dating. Two samples, a coarse sand and a fine gravel, were prepared for burial dating at the Reston Cosmogenic Nuclide (RECON) Lab and measured via accelerator mass spectrometry at the Purdue Rare Isotope Measurement (PRIME) Lab. The results of this work are summarized in the file “BaculiteMesa_SiteLocation_Odom.csv”, which contains site data and burial age calculations; measurements of aluminum-26 and beryllium-10, as well as related data, are located in respective .csv files. We calculated respective minimum and maximum burial ages for the sand (1.25 ± 0.08 Ma and 1.66 ± 0.12 Ma) and gravel (1.44...

The refractory nature of zircon to temperature and pressure allows even a single zircon grain to preserve a rich history of magmatic, metamorphic, and hydrothermal processes. Isotopic dating of micro-domains exposed in cross-sections of zircon grains allows us to interrogate this history. Unfortunately, our ability to select the zircon grains in a heavy mineral concentrate that records the most geochronologic information is limited by our inability to predict internal zonation from observations of whole zircon grains. Here we document the use of a petrographic microscope to observe and image the photoluminescence (PL) response of whole zircon grains excited under ultraviolet (UV) light, and the utility of this PL...

This data release contains whole-rock geochemical analyses from drill cores and cuttings of pre-Middle Jurassic basement rocks that are buried beneath Coastal Plain sedimentary deposits in Florida and Alabama. The analyses were acquired to support geologic mapping and characterization of little-known coastal-plain basement rock units for topical studies as in geochronology, and applications ranging from mineral, energy, and water resources to earthquake hazards. These samples provide rare insights into deeply buried rocks that have no surface exposures and no known exposed correlates. The 70 whole-rock samples from drill cores and cuttings were selected and described by Ryan Deasy (USGS) and analyzed for major and...

The dryland ecosystems of the western United States have been invaded by exotic annual grasses, such as cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum L.), that has promoted increased fire activity and reduced biodiversity detrimental to socio-environmental systems. The use of remote sensing tools to monitor exotic annual grass cover and dynamics over large areas can support early detection and rapid response initiatives. This dataset was generated using in situ observations from Bureau of Land Management's (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring data (AIM) plots, weekly composites of harmonized Landsat and Sentinel-2 (HLS) data, relevant environmental, vegetation, remotely sensed, and geophysical factors and machine learning...

This shapefile contains cumulative fish habitat condition index (HCI) scores as well as specific disturbance indices for local and network catchments of Southeast Alaska. Catchments were created in support of Jared Ross's Master’s thesis. The source datasets compiled and attributed to spatial units were identified as being: (1) meaningful for assessing fluvial fish habitat; (2) consistent across the entire study area in the way that they were assembled; (3) broadly representative of conditions in the past 10 years, and (4) of sufficient spatial resolution that they could be used to make valid comparisons among local catchment units. Fish occurrence data to support high-resolution distribution models and test various community and macroecological hypotheses have not been available at the national scale. We present IchthyMaps, a database of high-quality historical fish occurrences covering fishes of the conterminous United States. Designed on the principles of metacommunity ecology, IchthyMaps is a compilation of presence records from atlases up to 1990, at the resolution of the 1:100,000 National Hydrography Database Plus (NHDPlus) inter-confluence stream segment, readily aggregated into hierarchically coarser units (e.g. hydrologic unit code 8-digit and 12-digit watersheds). IchthyMaps contains about 606,550 presence records for 1,038 species...

The data are a long-term (1980-present), daily reanalysis of reference evapotranspiration, covering the globe at a spatial resolution of 0.625° Longitude x 0.5° Latitude. Reference evapotranspiration is a measure of evaporative demand, or the "thirst of the atmosphere", basically how much moisture from the surface could evaporate into overpassing air, assuming (i) that enough water is available to evaporate and (ii) the surface is covered with a specific reference crop that completely shades the ground (some other conditions also apply). For this dataset, reference evapotranspiration is derived from the daily implementation of the Penman-Monteith reference evapotranspiration equation (Monteith, 1965) as codified...

These datasets provide early estimates of 2022 fractional cover for exotic annual grass (EAG) species and one native perennial grass species on a bi-weekly basis from May to early July. The EAG estimates are developed within one week of the latest satellite observation used for that version. Each bi-weekly release contains four fractional cover maps along with their corresponding confidence maps for: 1) a group of 16 species of EAGs, 2) cheatgrass (Bromus tectorum); 3) medusahead (Taeniatherum caput-medusae); and 4) Sandberg bluegrass (Poa secunda). These datasets were generated leveraging field observations from Bureau of Land Management (BLM) Assessment, Inventory, and Monitoring (AIM) data plots; Harmonized Landsat...

The lower Paleogene Wilcox Group crops out around the northern edge of the Gulf of Mexico Basin and is a major coal-bearing unit and a primary oil and gas producer in the lower Paleogene section of the Gulf Coast region. The outcrop distribution of the Wilcox Group and other coal-bearing strata of the Gulf Coast region was compiled as part of a U.S. Geological Survey National Coal Assessment (Warwick and others, 1997). A structure contour map of the top of the Wilcox Group was constructed as part of a U.S. Geological Survey Petroleum Systems and Geologic Assessment of Oil and Gas of the northern Gulf of Mexico coastal region (Warwick, 2017). This surface, mainly constructed using data from oil and gas wells, depicts...

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists conducted field data collection efforts during the week of September 25 – 29, 2017, using a combination of conventional surveying technologies, for a large stretch of the Kootenai River near Bonners Ferry, Idaho. The work was initiated as an effort to validate commercially acquired topobathymetric light detection and ranging (lidar) data. The goal was to compare the airborne lidar data to topographic and bathymetric data collected through more traditional means (e.g. waded Real-Time Kinematic Global Navigation Satellite System (RTK-GNSS) surveys). The validated topobathymetric lidar data will be used for hydrologic modeling, assessment and restoration of aquatic habitat,...
This data release contains luminescence, weather, and sediment grain-size data from eastern Chuckwalla Valley, Riverside County, California. This study investigates sedimentary and geomorphic processes in eastern Chuckwalla Valley, Riverside County, California, a region of arid, basin-and-range terrain where extensive solar-energy development is planned. The objectives were to (1) measure local weather parameters and use them to model aeolian sediment transport potential; (2) identify surface sedimentary characteristics in representative localities; and (3) evaluate longer-term landscape evolution rates and processes by analyzing stratigraphy in combination with luminescence geochronology. These data accompany East...

These raster datasets are 3-meter lidar-derived images of Monroe County, West Virginia, and were created using geographic information systems (GIS) software. Lidar-derived elevation data acquired in late December of 2016 were used to create a 3-meter resolution working digital elevation model (DEM), from which a hillshade was applied and a topographic position index (TPI) raster was calculated. These two rasters were uploaded into GlobalMapper, where the TPI raster was made partially transparent and overlaid the hillshade DEM. The resulting image was exported to create a 3-meter resolution lidar-derived image. The data is projected in North America Datum (NAD) 1983 UTM Zone 17.

In lieu of a uniform mapping of the Chesapeake and Ohio Canal National Historical Park corridor at very high-resolution using UAS, this study developed a multi-scale workflow, where (1) geospatial modeling methods and (2) historic image analysis were used to constrain the areal extent of (3) detailed field and unmanned aerial systems (UAS) observation. Geospatial Modeling Methods: Harperella habitat characteristics reported by literature sources and corroborated by extremely limited harperella occurrence data (in the form of GPS locations), were compiled into a geospatial prediction model (GPM) to characterize the extent of harperella habitat for the region between Sideling Hill Wildlife Management Area and Harper’s...

Note: this dataset has been superseded by this new data product: Simpson, A., Turner, R., Blake, R., Liebhold, A., and Dorado, M., 2021, United States Register of Introduced and Invasive Species: U.S. Geological Survey data release, https://doi.org/10.5066/P95XL09Q. Invasive species are a subset of non-native (or nonindigenous) species, and knowing what species are non-native to a region is a first step to managing invasive species. This is the second update to the dataset "First comprehensive list of non-native species established in three major regions of the United States" supporting a USGS Open File Report by the same name published on 2018-10-17. Version 3.0 of the non-native species list, as of 2020-09-15,...
