Population fragmentation compromises population viability, reduces a species ability to respond toclimate change, and ultimately may reduce biodiversi ty. We studied the current state and potential causes offragmentation in grizzly bears over approximat ely 1,000,000 km of western Canada, the northern United States(US), and southeast Alaska. Gravel-bed river floodplains in mountain landscapes disproportionately concentrate diverse habitats, nutrient cycling, productivity of biota, and species interactions. Although stream ecologists know that river channel and floodplain habitats used by aquatic organisms are maintained by hydrologic regimes that mobilize gravel-bed sediments, terrestrial ecologists have largely been unaware of the importance of floodplain structures and processes to the life requirements of a wide variety of species. This project is an initiative to secure landscape-scale movement opportunities for multiple wildlife species in the Rocky Mountains of Montana and Idaho and adjacent transboundary areas of British Columbia and Alberta. Identify specific wildlife linkage locations across highways 1, 2, 200, 95 and I-90 in Northwest Montana and North Idaho. Recommend and implement with partners conservation delivery in these areas on public and private lands, and across highways to make these movement areas more permeable to wildlife.
