Road crossings at rivers and streams can create barriers to the movement of migratory fish when they are improperly designed or constructed. Washington State is home to several threatened species of salmon and trout, including bull trout, and recovery plans for these fish include repairing or replacing culverts that currently block their passage. The state is currently looking to replace approximately 1,000 culverts at an estimated cost of $2.45 billion. As engineers re-design these culverts, which typically have a service life of 50-100 years, it will be important to consider how changing climate conditions will impact streams in the region. FY2016This project will address limited tribal capacity for vulnerability assessment by providing guidance and data tailored to the needs and capacities of Northwest and Great Basin tribes. This directory contains summaries of 30 arc-second (~800m) snow products generated using the Variable Infiltration Capacity (VIC) macroscale hydrologic model. The driving meteorological dataset was generated by downscaling the 1/16th degree data used by Littell et al. 2011 (Regional Climate and Hydrologic Change in the Northern US Rockies and Pacific Northwest, http://cses.washington.edu/picea/USFS/pub/). The downscaling to 30 arc-second was achieved using PRISM climate normals for monthly average temperature and precipitation. As droughts become more frequent, there is a growing need to understand how drought impacts streamflow permanence. Intermittent streams, or streams that go dry at some point during the year, are found in all ecoregions and represent over half of the global stream network length. As stream intermittence increases, there will be implications for both aquatic and terrestrial wildlife communities, land management, and water rights holders.
