The focus of the first Midwest Urban Conservation Workshop was to understand the challenges stakeholders are facing, define the needs for collaboration and best management practices, establish a platform for conversation focusing on learning from each other and creating an opportunity for collaboration on new initiatives through a collective impact. The workshop was framed around the idea of making a collective impact, as what happens upstream directly affects what happens downstream. Over 40 participants included scientists, urban planners, and state, federal, private and nonprofit organizations with interests in creating a network of professionals interested in the value of our waterways. We envision a world where...

The ETPBR LCC Steering Committee (SC) consisted of 20-30 representatives from state, federal, tribal, and NGO entities. In December 2012, the LCC Steering Committee began drafting a strategic plan to provide a foundation and structure to carry out the mission and vision of the LCC and its partners. The SC met twice a year from 2012 to 2016 in various locations around the Midwest. Staff worked with the committee and project investigators to compile information for a set of descriptive flyers, posters, presentations, and annual updates.
The report detailing the development and organization of the Conservation Blueprint that forms the spatial analysis component of the Mississippi River Basin/Gulf Hypoxia Initiative is available on the Mississippi River Basin/Gulf Hypoxia Initiative Precision Conservation Blueprint website. This site also contains a user guide with specific guidance on how to access and utilize the Blueprint using the Data Basin and Science Base web services as well as a data dictionary for Precision Conservation Blueprint v1.5, which details sources and types of data compiled for the Blueprint’s 200+ GIS layers.

Report from a workshop is to share experiences, technical knowledge, and successful approaches to urban conservation – a true networking opportunity with other officials from cities and towns, NGOs, and researchers committed to urban conservation. This will increase the capacity for organizations, the public and decision makers to engage in responsible, creative, collective-impact-focused solutions and build upon already existing urban conservation efforts. At the workshop the afternoon session on April 30th was dedicated to brainstorming how a group of professionals within urban conservation can work towards creating a network where we can make more of an impact based on the five elements of Collective Impact....

Seven Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) are working together to identify key scientific uncertainties associated with design and management of a sustainable ecosystem/floodplain landscape that provides multiple benefits for agricultural productivity, water quality, and wildlife conservation—both locally and in the Gulf of Mexico. Online meetings through the summer are preparing for a Mississippi River Basin / Gulf Hypoxia Structured Decision Making Workshop to be held August 12 – 14, 2014 at the Ducks Unlimited Headquarters in Memphis, TN, to convene 30 key representatives integrating a range of perspectives. The ultimate goal of this multi-LCC effort is to prioritize agricultural conservation areas by...

How did this multi-LCC initiative develop? The framework for this landscape conservation design is objective-driven across three sectors for wildlife, water quality and agriculture – ultimately doing our part to strategically maximize the value of every conservation dollar for the Mississippi River Basin and Gulf of Mexico. An intensive year-long dialogue culminated in the Memphis workshop in August 2014, setting the stage for research and development of design tools this past year. For more information, see: https://www.fws.gov/science/catalog….What is the workshop purpose? Reconvene multi-sector participants to examine the set of high impact conservation practices, web-based spatial analysis tools, and research...

The EPiC / Urban Conservation Core Team is a small group of volunteers that provides leadership and direction for the EPiC / Urban Conservation Technical Advisory Group. Through a leadership role within the EPiC / Urban TAG, the Core Team helps initiate and guide dialogue in the larger community about developing common planning, actions, and evaluation for landscape scale urban conservation in the Midwest. The Urban Core Team Strategic Planning Workshop was an organizational meeting held to: 1. Discuss Green Infrastructure as an organizational framework for EPIC and receive feedback on EPIC. 2. Walk through the EPiC framework 3. Determine next steps on Core Team establishing mission, visions, goals/objectives.
