The Ecological Mapping System (ECS) of Texas data set is a spatially explicit map that was completed in sections, starting in 2007 through 2013. Methods developed in Texas were extended and used to complete mapping in Oklahoma in 2014 and 2015, so maps are compatible across state borders and cover about 11% of the conterminous USA (Figure 1). Vegetation patterns change so maps from any given date are less accurate as time passes. Cost-efficient methods of producing map up-dates are needed to facilitate planning and management. This multi-LCC project is designed to evaluate delivery of existing courses offered through the National Conservation Training Center (NCTC) as “pilots” to enhance expertise needed within the regional context of LCC and Climate Science Center (CSC) communities. The tillage suitability product is a per-crop, per-pixel (30 square-meters) model representation of the predicted probability (0.00-1.00) that an area can support commodity crop development for a suite of crop types commonly grown in the LCD landscape. The values for each grid cell are interpreted as a probability, with any value greater-than 0.50 suggesting an area should be suitable for crop development based on observations of thousands of farmed areas around the LCD. Feature class data was designed to support the development of the Environmental Flows Information Toolkit (EFIT) a geospatial application initiated by Texas Parks and Wildlife (TPWD). The EFIT is a web-based tool built around conservation problem solving using innovative data and integrated statistical models. The Great Plains Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GPLCC) has participated in watershedbased conservation planning efforts which identify flow protection and restoration strategies as priority conservation actions to conserve native fishes in the Great Plains. We developed multi-scale habitat suitability models for black-tailed prairie dogs (BTPD) in the southwestern Great Plains, corresponding to the western region of the Great Plains LCC. We used long-term (10-yr), high-resolution datasets on BTPD colony boundary locations collected at 7 study areas distributed across the region to develop resource selection functions based on colony locations and expansion patterns. Monarch butterfly and other pollinators are in trouble. Monarch butterfly habitat— including milkweed host plants and nectar food sources—has declined drastically throughout most of the United States. Observed overwinter population levels have also exhibited a long-term downward trend, suggesting a strong relationship between habitat loss and monarch population declines. While we assessed the vulnerability of a number of different wildlife and plant species to climate change, none of those species exhibited high vulnerability to changes projected for the region and there was limited differentiation in vulnerability between the individual species. Given this shared level of vulnerability to climate change, we chose to focus our adaptation planning on grassland birds as they represent a large group with a diversity of habitat needs. DJ Case will work with PLJV and other project cooperators to develop, conduct, and analyze 14 focus groups with key landowners in six states within the GPLCC. Focus groups allow for open-ended discussions and follow-on questioning that will reveal the key socioeconomic realities and hurdles that discourage landowners from enrolling in conservation programs or restoring playas.
