Collection of 4 assessments for Med/Low-gradient Streams and Rivers. The Condition Index ranks stream segments according to how well they meet the Desired State described qualitatively and quantitatively in the draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). From the Condition Index, 3 assessments are derived that rank opportunities for management and restoration of conditions included in the Condition Index – Watershed Land Use, Riparian Cover, and Stream Meander. Watershed Land Use management opportunities are based on the proportion of undisturbed land in the contributing (i.e. cumulative) watershed such that stream segments meeting the Desired State are considered Maintenance opportunities (values 5-6). This project maps floodplain inundation frequency at the landscape scale in the south central United States. Using 15-40 images per Landsat scene, we established a wide range of possible flood frequencies across a variety of rising and falling river stages. This method represents a flexible approach that can be configured to define habitat availability for a variety of terrestrial and aquatic species.
The Adaptation Science Management Team adopted the broadly defined habitat type of “medium-low gradient rivers and streams,” as a priority habitat within the GCPO geography. The desired landscape endpoint for these rivers and streams should characterize a natural system in a least impacted condition – systems in this condition should be targets for protection and the goal of restoration activities in degraded systems. High gradient streams and rivers of the Ozark Highlands were selected by the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks (GCPO) Adaptation Science Management Team (ASMT) as a priority habitat system. The goal of this document discover and apply geospatial data and analysis to estimate the amount, configuration and condition of key habitat features of high gradient streams and rivers of the GCPO. The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. The Condition Index ranks pixels (250-m) according to how well they meet the Desired State for the Forested Wetland habitat system, which is described qualitatively and quantitatively in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Higher values indicate sites closer to the Desired State. Value of 1 indicates areas appropriate for restoration but currently under an alternative land use (i.e. potential habitat). Estimates of nutrient loading to the Gulf of Mexico indicate that nine states within the Mississippi River Basin are responsible for approximately 75% of all nitrogen and phosphorus delivered to the Gulf. The Mississippi Basin supports a rich assemblage of fish species; at least 25% of all species in the conterminous United States are found in the Basin. These assemblages reflect their habitats, human landscape disturbances, and fragmentation of the river network by dams. Climate also has close associations with aquatic habitat conditions and ultimately fish community composition. Climate change is anticipated to lead to additional changes in stream habitats, including changing thermal properties and flow regimes....

These present data on sediment carbon within submerged aquatic vegetation beds from fresh to saline coastal locations in Barataria Bay, Louisiana. Water quality, site location, vegetation biomass and species composition are presented. This project was co-funded by the Gulf Coast Prairie and the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperatives and the South Central Climate Adaptation Science Center. The Southeast Blueprint User Guide is a resource to help conservation professionals use the Blueprint to bring in new resources and inform decision-making. It compiles different examples of real Blueprint uses to provide new ideas about how to connect to this larger strategy. It showcases the approaches, wording, and maps that Blueprint staff have found to work best in different situations. It showcases a range of case studies, grouped into a few themes that summarize the primary ways people have used the Blueprint.
Building off the successes of the stratified random sampling approach to selecting aerial transects for waterfowl surveying used by Mississippi and Arkansas, the waterfowl conservation community is undertaking this approach across the entire Mississippi Alluvial Valley. Waterfowl respond directly to climate factors and this approach allows for statistically valid estimates that can track trends over time.

The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative.It represents a relative ranking of HUC12 watersheds according to the quantity and quality of habitat as described in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Watersheds (HUC12) ranked by the presence, quantity and quality of the Grasslands habitat system (includes prairie, pasture, and haylands) within the 5 sub-geographies of the GCPO LCC region. Once ranked, watersheds were classified (e.g., “Top 10%”) based on the proportion of the total Grasslands area (current + potential) contained within the watershed.

This report is one in a series developed in a collaboration between Mississippi State University and Duke University to identify opportunities to engage private landowners in the GCPO LCC in conservation and restoration activities by focusing on ecosystem service outcomes that are important to them. There are three main pieces of interrelated work: 1) a survey of landowners to identify what services are important to them and how willing they are to participate in conservation or restoration activities; 2) coarse resolution maps of the provision and where possible demand for ecosystem services in the region; and 3) a social network analysis to understand how best to engage private landowners across the region. The Southeast Aquatic Resources Partnership will engage regional aquatic experts to provide input into the development of desired ecological states - defined by landscape and species endpoints - for each of the broadly defined Freshwater Aquatic habitat types listed in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s draft Integrated Science Agenda. The final product will include recommendations for next steps to validate and achieve the desired landscape conditions, including potential modeling and tool development to facilitate spatial projection of final desired states.

This project will evaluate the extent to which planted pine can provide Desired Ecological States for wildlife species using literature review and meta-analyses. Based on this review, harvest scheduling software (HabPlan) will be used to simulate a variety of management options across a 50-year time span to quantify the availability of Desired Ecological States over the course of each simulation and to identify options for providing open pine conditions in managed forests of theGulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks region.
This project will address species-habitat relationships for a priority aquatic system for the GCPO LCC, Mainstem Big Rivers. Specifically, the project will collect subsurface aquatic habitat data using side-scan sonar and high resolution bathymetry data in the Pearl River system of Louisiana. This project expands on current work ongoing in the Pearl River, and would extend habitat data collection for the purposes of making recommendations on restoration of aquatic habitat for species endpoints in this aquatic system. This project directly addresses landscape conservation design and will be used to inform Adaptation Strategies.
