The zip file below contains raw input and output files for the 4 final version of the ALI Marxan model. The versions all have the same number of runs (100), number of iterations (35 million), SPF factor for each conservation feature,(100) and BLM (0.35). They vary in overall goal levels and whether or not facets were targeted. The four versions are: (1) high overall goal levels, facets not targeted;(2) medium overall goal levels, facets not targeted; (3) medium overall goal levels, facets not targeted; (4) medium overall goal levels, facets targeted at 15%. Please see the associated report (ALI 2013) for further details, and contact Madeline with any questions.
This project identifies priority areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion to implement conservation strategies for riverine and riparian habitat. This is tailored towards the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI) conservation goals and objectives, and provides the foundation for adaptation to a changing climate. This project adopts a “zoned” approach to identifying focal areas, connectivity management zones and zones for riparian habitat and ecological representation. Through a series of workshops and webinars, the ALI articulated its freshwater conservation goals and targets. Key aspects of these goals included: a focus on non-anadromous salmonid (salmon and steelhead) species, include riparian birds and waterfowl as key...
This geodatabase contains the ALI Marxan 500-acre hexagons, which have fields representing all Marxan targets. An analysis area footprint is also included.

The Omniscape algorithm is based on an omnidirectional implementation of the connectivity tool, CircuitScape. It uses a moving window approach to calculate connectivity. For more information on the OmniScape approach please refer to McRae et al (2016) For this project, we tested several different moving window sizes from 250 meters to 1250 meters. A pixel size of 90 meters was used for computational efficiency. We used the OmniScape Python script provided by TNC. Omniscape requires two inputs: a resistance surface and a source surface. We used the standard resistance surface described above, along with the habitat layer described above as the source surface. Current FlowThe raw output of Omniscape is converted into...

This database contains the data inputs used to create a 30 meter resistance layer for the Western Washington Habitat Connectivity Assessment. All input data were clipped to the study area and converted to 30 meter raster format in the same projection with matching cell alignment unless otherwise noted. Input data was reclassified as needed in order to assign resistance values. We made three different resistance surfaces, using these data inputs, for testing in sensitivity analyses. For the first, we started with a conventional methodology for creating resistance surfaces (Using Gnarly Landscape Utilities), and then combined this result with nuanced layers about road impacts and building density impacts. These nuanced...

The layers in this map service represent 4 different version of the final ALI Marxan model. Selection frequency layers show how often each hexagon was selected over 100 runs of a specific version. The "Best Solution" is not a perfect solution, but simply the best scoring solution out of 100 runs for each version.
This map package contains four resistance surfaces, one which is the same surface at two different resolutions (30m and 90m). The resistance surfaces were used in Linkage Mapper and Omniscape to model naturalness connectivity in Southwest Washington. Naturalness resistance values from all the inputs can be found in the report methodology. We made three different resistance surfaces, using the data inputs, found here, for testing in sensitivity analyses. For the first, we started with a conventional methodology for creating resistance surfaces (Using Gnarly Landscape Utilities), and then combined this result with nuanced layers about road impacts and building density impacts. These nuanced layers have continuous numerical...

Context and Research QuestionIn 2010, the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group (WWHCWG) statewide analysis identified a need for a closer look at this landscape extending from the Southern Cascades (from approximately Mount Rainier to the Columbia River), through southwestern Washington, and into the Olympic Peninsula. Several species in this landscape have unique connectivity patterns and broad-scale data limitations which we began to explore in this analysis. Finer-scale analyses are necessary to prioritize and inform actions to maintain and restore habitat connectivity in this region.During meetings in 2016, 2017, and 2018, the WWHCG group developed a plan to model the region using Linkage Mapper...

In 2014 and 2015, the Arid Lands Initiative developed “Conservation Scorecards” for their Priority Core Areas (PCAs) and Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). To create the scorecards, we collected numerous existing geospatial datasets that could help provide decision support for ALI land managers, then summarized them to the geometry of PCAs and PLAs (e.g., took the spatial mean of a Landscape Condition Model). To better understand the analysis, please read the report, “Assessing the Condition and Resilience of Collaborative Conservation Priority Areas in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion,” available here. The PCA scorecards pdfs are attached to the main report as an appendix, and the PLA scorecards are included in a short...
This project is part of a larger effort to design a sustainable landscape for wildlife and ecological systems in the Columbia Plateau ecoregion. Another goal of this effort is to test and describe different approaches to doing “Landscape Conservation Design” (LCD) and working towards articulating a toolkit of approaches for LCD. This report documents a task related to further develop and testing of this toolkit as applied to priority areas in the Columbia Plateau). This project focuses on a rapid assessment method of several potential areas across a large landscape. This assessment project builds from these previous ALI efforts (ALI 2013 and ALI 2014) by providing decision support for strategy development. This...

This zipped folder includes a file geodatabase that contains the spatial data sets gathered for the second phase of the Arid Land Initiative’s Landscape Conservation Design activity in the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion, as well as an excel file with information about the Ecological Integrity Assessment (EIA) data variables. This analysis, which was funded by the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative, is fully described in the 2015 ALI report also available on ScienceBase, here. The file geodatabase contains the Priority Conservation Areas identified using Marxan in the first phase of the analysis. For the second phase, numerous statistics summarizing representing current conservation value and vulnerability...
This project was initially envisioned as an approach to identify priority areas for the National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) in the Columbia Plateau ecoregion. It quickly became clear that working in a partnership-based setting would lead to a more holistic conservation design in the region, and NWRS priorities would follow from that design. Therefore, we aligned this project with an existing conservation partnership in the region, the Arid Lands Initiative (ALI).The ALI is a partnership comprised of state and federal agencies and public and private organizations working to conserve and restore a viable and well-connected ecosystem in eastern Washington’s arid lands. This group is working to determine priority...
These layer packages contain the results of the Linkage Mapper tools as described below. Running Five of the Linkage Mapper ToolsThe Linkage Mapper software package includes six tools. For this study we used five of these tools, producing stand-alone products which we also combined to create synthesized products. We used Linkage Mapper v2.1Beta5 and an ArcGIS modelbuilder script to run Linkage Pathways, Pinchpoint Mapper, Centrality Mapper, the Linkage Priority tool, and Barrier Mapper using the above described resistance surfaces and habitat concentration areas (HCAs) layers. We used the default parameters described in the respective user guides except where otherwise noted below. The following are the high level...

These are the Python scripts used to create the scorecards for the Phase 2 report. They are primarily provided for reference, and require library installation and several local files to run properly. If anyone is interested in running a modeified version of these scripts for a similar purpose, please contact Madeline Steele (madeline_steele@fws.gov). One script makes map PNGs from an ArcMap mxd with styling that varies with scale, and the other pulls these maps and other information together to create the scorecard PDFs.
The Social Network Analysis (SNA) provides data on where organizations are working, who they are working with and allows the LCD to identify gaps in conservation efforts and to identify collaboration potential. The SNA survey had respondents identify conservation priorities, level of engagement, level of collaboration, and different conservation strategies. These features represent areas of interest of conservation practitioners who have expressed interest in engaging in the broader landscape conservation design project (for more information visit the LCD project website http://columbiacoastblueprint.org/ ). Areas of interest represent areas where organizations work on conservation. They do not represent all conservation...

This Esri file geodatabase contains the Arid Lands Initiative’s Priority Core Areas (PCAs) and Priority Linkage Areas (PLAs). For all PCAs and PLAs over 5,000 acres in size, we developed a "scorecard" that presents its rank, relative to the other PLAs, for a range of threats and values. Both the raw, continuous values and the ranks are available in the attributes of these feature classes. Details about each field are provided in the fields metadata section. The citations in the fields metadata can all be found in the references section of the Phase 2 final report, available here. The full report with PCA scorecards is available here, and the addendum report with PLA scorecards is here. Most of the raw input...
