This dataset was created as part of the USGS Afghanistan Project investigating artisanal and small-scale mining activity. Clay mining for brick making purposes represents a small but important segment of the mineral extraction industry in Kabul, Afghanistan. Over the past several decades Kabul has grown from a relatively small city, with a 1970 population of less than 500,000 people, to a sprawling urban center with approximately 4.2 million people in 2020 (CIA 2020). Population growth has expanded the need for housing, commercial, and industrial buildings, and associated infrastructure. This has greatly increased demand for bricks, the primary construction material of the region. In this study, very high-resolution...

The US Geological Survey, in cooperation with the National Park Service, mapped 35 7.5-minute quadrangles, within a 2-mile-wide+ corridor centered on the Parkway, from BLRI (Blue Ridge Parkway) Mile Post (MP) 0 near Afton, Virginia southward to MP 218 at Cumberland Knob, approximately 1.3 km south of the Virginia – North Carolina State Line. Detailed bedrock geologic mapping for this project was conducted at 1:24,000-scale by systematically traversing roads, trails, creeks, and ridges within and adjacent to the 2-mile-wide+ corridor along the 216.9-mile length of the BLRI in Virginia. Geologic data at more than 23,000 station points were collected during this project (September 2009 – February 2014), with approximately...

Cave-limited species display patchy and restricted distributions, but are challenging to study in-situ because of the difficulty of sampling. It is often unclear whether the observed distribution is a sampling artifact or a true restriction in range. Further, the drivers of the distribution could be local environmental conditions, such as cave humidity, or they could be associated with surface features that are surrogates for cave conditions. If surface features can be used to predict the distribution of important cave taxa, then conservation management goals can be more easily obtained. These GIS data represent the input and results of a spatial statistical model used to examine the hypothesis that the presence...

This data release includes electron 40Ar/39Ar collected at the U.S. Geological Survey for samples from the Day Nui Con Voi metamorphic massif, Vietnam. Rock samples were collected by Meng-Wan Yeh, Michael J. Kunk and Robert P Wintsch in 2011. Mineral separates were prepared and aliquots of amphibole, muscovite, phlogopite, biotite, and potassium feldspar were analyzed by the 40Ar/39Ar method at the U.S. Geological Survey Bascom ARgon Dating (BARD) Laboratory in Reston, Virginia. The 40Ar/39Ar data constrain the timing of exhumation of rocks within the massif.

This data release consists of a single ESRI shapefile, Hydrogeo_SECTpts, with geologic information from the previously published Hydrogeology of Southeastern Connecticut (Melvin, 1974). Test boring location points digitized from georeferenced area maps (1:24,000 scale) are attributed with associated well log information: town, identification numbers, altitude, depth to bottom, and remarks regarding the geology of the well finish. Descriptions for the bottoms of boreholes recorded the source driller's logs.

This data release, RI_WRpts.gdb, consists of information from Rhode Island Ground-water maps published by the Rhode Island Water Resources Coordinating Board, the Rhode Island Port and Industrial Development Commission, Rhode Island Industrial Commission, and the Rhode Island Development Council; in cooperation with the U.S. Geological Survey. The point data on these maps have been digitized into a standard ArcGIS geodatabase format. Data about wells and test borings consists of geographic location, identification number, geologic material (bedrock or unconsolidated), altitude in feet of the bedrock surface or altitude of the bottom of well, and data source. Seismic survey locations and bedrock outcrops where they...
Upon reactivation, movement of deep-seated landslides in the Greater Pittsburgh region may persist for long periods of time. Monitoring equipment was located at two sites on a deep-seated rockslide in Aleppo Township, Pennsylvania to establish relationships between precipitation and changes in the state of activity and velocity. Precipitation, snow depth, and air temperature are monitored at a weather station (ARS_WS) located in a relatively flat, open area in the northern part of the rockslide. Displacement and soil moisture are monitored at a second site located in the southern part of a graben (ARS_GR) in the head of the rockslide. At ARS_WS, instrumentation includes a tipping bucket rain gauge, temperature probe,...

Sediment cores were collected in Great Dismal Swamp National Wildlife Refuge in November, 2017 to advance understanding of climate- and land-management driven changes in vegetation, hydrology, and fire regimes. Radiocarbon dates were obtained from samples in two cores (GDS-519-3-21-2017 and GDS-520-3-21-2017) to generate age models for the cores. Bulk sediment samples, charcoal, plant macrofossils, and pollen residue were selected at the USGS in Reston, Virginia and submitted to Beta Analytic, Inc. and the National Ocean Sciences Accelerator Mass Spectrometry (NOSAMS) laboratories for radiocarbon dating. Those laboratories provided both radiocarbon ages and stable carbon isotope (delta 13C) results, which can be...
The Blue Ridge belt in northwestern North Carolina and northeastern Tennessee is composed chiefly of 1,000-million to 1,100-million-year-old metamorphic and plutonic rocks that have been thrust many miles northwestward across unmetamorphosed Cambrian(?) and Cambrian sedimentary rocks of the Unaka belt. The Blue Ridge thrust sheet is rooted on the southeast along the Brevard zone, a zone of strike-slip faulting along which metamorphic and plutonic rocks of the Inner Piedmont belt are juxtaposed with rocks of the Blue Ridge. Near the southeastern edge of the Blue Ridge belt, the Blue Ridge thrust sheet is breached by erosion, and the rocks beneath are exposed in the Grandfather Mountain window, which is 45 miles long...

This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the State College 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in Pennsylvania. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter resolution lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2016 and 2019 and downloaded from the USGS National Map TNM Download. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

This study applied historical aerial imagery and satellite imagery to create digital surface models (DSMs) of the Helmand River Valley situated in southwestern Afghanistan. The historical imagery, collected in 1952 by Fairchild Aerial Surveys Incorporated (FAS), at 1:40,000 scale, represents the earliest known aerial photographic archive of the Helmand Valley landscape. Structure-from-motion (SfM) multi-view stereo (MVS) photogrammetric techniques were used together with ground control points collected from high resolution satellite imagery to create a 5m digital elevation model (DEM) and 2m orthoimage. The historical DEM was evaluated for accuracy against a 2006 5m DEM using SPOT-5 HRG satellite imagery which was...

This Data Release contains 1:24,000-scale geospatially-enabled geological data to accompany the Geology of the Mineral and Lake Anna West quadrangles, Virginia. The map product is a cooperator series publication and, as such, does not have a specific abstract. Geologic mapping for this map product was completed between 2014 and 2017, with most of the field work occurring between January 2016 and May 2017. Numerous foot traverses were completed along creeks and roads throughout the field area; the shore of Lake Anna was accessed by kayak to provide additional data. Distributions of soil units were considered when assigning bedrock type in areas where outcrop was lacking and helped to distinguish fluvial terrace deposits....

This multi-band raster dataset describes the extent of agricultural activity, including both growing and bare or fallow agricultural fields, surrounding the city of Kabul, Afghanistan for 1988 - 2020. Landsat multispectral images acquired at the height of each year's growing season were used to perform a combined vegetation and clay band ratio analysis. Each band of this raster dataset represents a single year of analysis result; Band 1 indicates agricultural area for 1988, Band 2 indicates that of 1989, and so on. Due to cloud coverage or gaps in the image record, an appropriate image was not available for nine of the years during this 32-year time period; in total 24 Landsat images were used. Band 1 indicates...
