Karst hydrologic systems are important resources in the state of Tennessee both as drinking water resources and as centers for possible biological diversity. These systems are susceptible to contamination due to the inherent connectivity between surface water and groundwater systems in karst systems. A partnership between the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and Tennessee Department of Conservation (TDEC) was formed to investigate karst spring systems across the state utilizing fluorescent groundwater tracing, particularly in areas where these resources may be used as drinking water sources. In fall 2021, USGS and TDEC staff identified possible vulnerabilities or complexities that may exist within karst spring systems...

Specific activities of cesium-137 (half life = 30.17 years), lead-210 (half life = 22.3 years), radium-226 (half life = 1,600 years), thorium-234 (half life = 24.1 days), and potassium-40 (half life = 1.277 billion years) in disintegrations per minute per gram (dpm/g) were determined for the Lake Lanier cores. The laboratory errors (plus or minus) and the critical levels are included for each sample.
This data release contains inputs for and outputs from hydrologic simulations for the conterminous United States (CONUS) using the Precipitation Runoff Modeling System (PRMS) version 5.1.0 and the USGS National Hydrologic Model infrastructure (NHM, Regan and others, 2018). Historical simulations using the Maurer forcings (Maurer and others, 2002) were conducted for the period 1950-2010. This metadata record documents the simulation output files for simulations ran using the dynamic parameters file. The output files are aggregated at the HUC4 level and are grouped and downloadable by HUC2 hydrologic region. Each zip folder contains identical information, just for a different region and set of hydrologic response...
The Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP) has become one of the most important agricultural regions in the US, and it relies heavily on a groundwater system that is poorly understood and shows signs of substantial change. The heavy use of the available groundwater resources has resulted in significant groundwater-level declines and reductions in base flow in streams within the MAP. These impacts are limiting well production and threatening future water-availability for the region. This product will help not only scientists in our center, but also at a national level. This product will also be part of a larger study encompassing the Mississippi Alluvial Plain region. The Mississippi Alluvial Plain extent was delineated...
Hurricane Sandy, which made landfall on October 29, 2012, near Brigantine, New Jersey, had a significant impact on coastal New Jersey, including the large areas of emergent wetlands at Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (NWR) and the Barnegat Bay region. In response to Hurricane Sandy, U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) has undertaken several projects to assess the impacts of the storm and provide data and scientific analysis to support recovery and restoration efforts. As part of these efforts, the USGS Coastal and Marine Geology Program (CMGP) sponsored Coastal National Elevation Database (CoNED) Applications Project in collaboration with the USGS National Geospatial Program (NGP), and National Oceanic and...

A Solinist water logger was used to collect water data at the Crawford Tract section of the Cache River Watershed in Illinois from June 22nd to November 29th of 2021. This data included temperature, pressure, and depth.

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. PP1773_unit_alt_grid is a polygon shapefile of surface altitudes for 16 hydrogeologic units as described in report Professional Paper 1773. Surface altitudes were interpolated and discretized to the 2-mile by 2-mile rotated grid used to simulate groundwater flow in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North and South Carolina. Altitudes are available for 17 surfaces, hydrogeologic unit layer 1 (top - land surface) through Layer 16 (top...
Input Data for Hydrologic Simulations of the CONUS using the NHM-PRMS, 1950-2010, Maurer Calibration
Historical simulations using the Maurer atmospheric forcings (Maurer and others, 2002) were produced for the period 1950-2010. These data document the PRMS climate input data files for these simulations. Input files for the simulations include the PRMS base parameter file and five dynamic parameter files that update model parameters on an annual time step for impervious area, dominant land cover type, and canopy interception. Maurer forcings include...
This data release contains four data files that were used to evaluate the conditions during which erosion occurred and the magnitude of erosional events. A single shapefile contains shoreline positions for five sites measured during the beginning and end of the project and projected shoreline positions based on the observed erosion rates. There are three .csv files that contain measured erosion pin data, photo-electric erosion pin data, and acoustic energy and water level data.
In 2013, water-quality and age-date tracer samples were collected at wells located along two flow paths in the Memphis aquifer, southwest Tennessee, as part of the National Water Quality Assessment (NAWQA) Project of the National Water-Quality Program to better understand the vulnerability of the aquifer to contamination.. Each flow path began in the aquifer outcrop area (shallow well depths) and ended at public supply wells (deep well depths) in Memphis, TN in the confined parts of the aquifer. This data release includes results for samples collected as part of this study and information for additional wells that provided supplemental data near the end of each flow path to support the findings in "Fraction of young...

Point data pp1773_unit_alt_boreholes represent the 309 locations of various types of boreholes that were used to determine the altitudes of each of the 16 hydrogeologic unit layers, plus the land surface altitude at the point location. The layers were used in the regional groundwater availability study of the aquifer system described in Professional Paper 1773, Groundwater Availability in the Atlantic Coastal Plain of North and South...

A hydrogeologic framework was constructed for the Coastal Lowlands aquifer system in southwestern Louisiana. Data from previous hydrogeologic and geologic studies were synthesized and expanded using 2,242 geophysical logs to map four hydrogeologic units: the Chicot aquifer system, Evangeline aquifer, Jasper aquifer system, and Catahoula aquifer. Raster surfaces were created for the base and thickness of each unit to provide a generalized framework to support regional groundwater studies. A table of the well information and point data used to generate the raster surfaces is included in this data release.
