The USGS Central Region Energy Team assesses oil and gas resources of the United States. The onshore and State water areas of the United States comprise 71 provinces. Within these provinces, Total Petroleum Systems are defined and Assessment Units are defined and assessed. Each of these provinces is defined geologically, and most province boundaries are defined by major geologic changes. The Sacramento Basin Province is located in the Northern Central Valley, California, encompassing all or parts of Shasta, Tehana, Glenn, Butte, Colusa, Lake, Yuba, Sutter, Placer, Yolo, Napa, Sacramento, Amador, San Joaquin, Solano, Contra Costa, Calaveras, Alameda, and Stanislaus counties in California. The main population centers...

The depth to top of the Wilcox Group is contoured from location and top information derived from the Petroleum Information (PI) Wells database. The depth to Wilcox map represents the tops found in the database with the addition of surface geology from USGS maps and field data. The veracity of the PI Wells database is being checked by comparison to published cross sections and geologic maps. Interpretation of the depth to Wilcox and apparent thickness maps along with published measured sections and cross sections indicates that portions of Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi and Alabama contain broad areas where a 20 to 40 foot net thickness of lignite and coal occur at shallow depths. The thicker coal zones are attributed...

The Assessment Unit is the fundamental unit used in the National Assessment Project for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Assessment Unit is defined within the context of the higher-level Total Petroleum System. The Assessment Unit is shown here as a geographic boundary interpreted, defined, and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates a set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations sharing similar geologic, geographic, and temporal properties within the Total Petroleum System, such as source rock, timing, migration pathways, trapping mechanism, and hydrocarbon type. The Assessment Unit boundary is defined geologically as the limits of the geologic...

The Total Petroleum System is used in the National Assessment Project and incorporates the Assessment Unit, which is the fundamental geologic unit used for the assessment of undiscovered oil and gas resources. The Total Petroleum System is shown here as a geographic boundary defined and mapped by the geologist responsible for the province and incorporates not only the set of known or postulated oil and (or) gas accumulations, but also the geologic interpretation of the essential elements and processes within the petroleum system that relate to source, generation, migration, accumulation, and trapping of the discovered and undiscovered petroleum resource(s).

The clinker theme represents a digital polygon coverage showing areas where clinker is present. Clinker forms from the natural burning of coal beds in outcrop, and consists of baked (melted) and fused rocks that are commonly red or red-brown in color. In this coverage, only clinker formed by the burning of the Knobloch coal bed is represented. Additionally, clinker of the Knobloch coal bed that is present within the Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservation is not shown. This theme was created specifically for the National Coal Resources Assessment in the Northern Rocky Mountains and Great Plains Region.

Dataset contains locations of drainage tile permits in South Dakota obtained from County and Local Water Board records. The counties included are: Brown, Deuel, Grant, Hamlin, Hanson, Kingsbury, Lake, McCook, Minnehaha, Moody, Roberts, Spink, and Turner. The date permits records were collected vary by county. A majority of the permits from counties were collected as of January 2012. Two counties (Hanson and Minnehaha) were updated in December,2013. In addition to the location (as a TRS) and available (if given)pipe information recorded on the permit, this dataset provides the latitude and longitude of the location given on the permit, which is not typically provided on the permit application or record. Additionally,...

The Matanuska-Susitna Valley is in the northeastern part of the Cook Inlet Basin, Alaska, an area experiencing rapid population growth and development proximal to many lakes. Here water commonly flows between lakes and ground water, indicating interrelation between water quantity and quality. Thus concerns exist that poorer quality ground water may degrade local lake ecosystems. This concern has led to water-quality sampling in cooperation with the Alaska Department of Environmental Conservation and the Matanuska-Susitna Borough. A map showing the estimated altitude of the water table illustrates potential ground- water flow directions and areas where ground- and surface-water exchanges and interactions might occur....

This report describes the results of an evaluation of five pier-scour equations for coarse-bed streams. Scour depths calculated by the equations were compared with 18 pier-scour measurements at 3 bridge sites in Montana, 10 measurements at 2 sites in Alaska, 4 measurements at 1 site in Maryland, 1 measurement in Ohio, and 9 measurements at 2 sites in Virginia (fig. 1 and table 1). Scour measurements for each site are summarized in tables 1 and 2. The Simplified Chinese equation, the Froehlich equation, the Froehlich design equation, the HEC- 18/Jones equation, and the HEC-18/Mueller equation were evaluated based on the accuracy of pier-scour estimates and number and magnitude of underestimates resulting from each...

A raster dataset of the percent of sagebrush-dominated ecological systems within a 5km radius moving window. This dataset was made by reclassifying the Sagebrush Cover raster into values of only sagebrush-dominated ecological systems, and then running a moving window analysis on that raster.

A raster dataset representing road density within the Western United States. This dataset was made combining the BLM GRSG Westwide Habitat Disturbance Threats of Surface Streets, Major Roads, and Highways. The density metric of the raster is kilometers of roads per square kilometer within a 5km radius multiplied by 10000. The purpose is to represent road density within the Western United States. It was created to be incorporated into a larger landscape scale geospatial data modeling effort, the Conservation and Restoration Strategy.
