The Neversink River watershed (above the Neversink Reservoir) has been a focus of U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) research regarding stream geochemistry, acidification, and ecology dynamics for decades. In 2019, the Water Mission Area Next Generation Water Observing Systems Program augmented the existing stream gage network there, including instrumentation to specifically characterize various aspects of groundwater discharge to streams. An important control on the spatiotemporal dynamics of groundwater discharge can be stream valley corridor depth to bedrock, otherwise conceptualized as the thickness of unconsolidated sediments sediments over the contiguous bedrock interface. In June 2019, and November 2020, passive...

This data release contains frequency domain electromagnetic (FDEM) data collected during discrete times between July 2019 to October 2022 near Lake Placid, NY as part of a multi-method effort to monitor the effects of different road salt treatments on groundwater and the surrounding surface water (West Branch Ausable River). The FDEM instrument used was a Geophex GEM-2; a broadband sensor that measures the bulk conductivity and magnetic susceptibility of the subsurface down to approximately 5 meters (16.4 feet) depth. The instrument is hand carried by a single operator and data are collected at walking speeds. Data were repeatedly collected during each campaign at the three sites nicknamed for the planned road salt...
This data release contains digital hydrogeologic datasets compiled for eight valley-fill aquifer systems in upstate New York. The data sets include input data necessary to create and interpolate the hydrogeologic framework of the aquifers and surrounding till-covered uplands. Input data is provided as point feature classes and georeferenced files of previously published reports along with the digitized data as line or polygon feature classes. Feature class datasets are provided for convenience and may contain subtle differences to shapefiles due to inherent differences in file types. The data release is composed of eight child items, one for each valley-fill area. Each child item contains the data pertaining...
The National Crude Oil Spill Fate and Natural Attenuation Research Site is located near Bemidji, MN, USA. A high-pressure oil pipeline ruptured in 1979 releasing ~1.7 million liters of light crude oil, which sprayed over an area of ~6500 square meters and collected in topographic depressions. Approximately 75% of the spilled oil was recovered. Much of the remainder reached the water table, where it is distributed into three residual oil bodies (the north, middle, and south oil pools). Groundwater flows east-northeast toward a small lake roughly 300 m downgradient from the original spill site. Secondary reactions of sediments with byproducts from anaerobic degradation of the oil plumes cause increases in total dissolved...
