Description of Work Benthos (benthic invertebrate) and plankton (phytoplankton/zooplankton) communities in Wisconsin's four Lake Michigan Areas of Concern (AOCs; Menominee River, Lower Green Bay and Fox River, Sheboygan River, and Milwaukee Estuary) and six non-AOCs will be quantified. The inclusion of non-AOC sites will allow comparison of AOC sites to relatively-unimpacted or less-impacted control sites with natural physical and chemical characteristics that are as close as possible to that of the AOCs. The community data within and between the AOCs and non-AOCs will be analyzed. Pollinator decline and conservation is a complex and challenging issue with the potential to tax the capacity of individual state agencies; a collaborative approach among states and federal agencies has a higher likelihood success in meeting this emerging conservation challenge. Bumble bees have been identified as a particularly imperiled group of important pollinators. To aid the collaborative pollinator conservation effort, this report compiles the most up-to-date information related to bumble bees: threats, best practices for land management, and monitoring protocols into one location.The goal is to provide the basis for discussions on how to move bumble bee conservation forward more collaboratively in the Midwest.

Fish, water quality and vegetation data are collected each year through the Upper Mississippi River Restoration‐ Environmental Management Program‐ Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP). A complete description of the program can be found at: http://www.umesc.usgs.gov/ltrmp.html. Personnel from the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources collect data in Navigation Pool 8, one of 6 study reaches included in the program. Data have been collected under a stratified random framework for fish and water quality since 1993 and for vegetation since 1998. This report summarizes the 2012 dataset.

The Upper Midwest and Great Lakes (UMGL) and the Eastern Tallgrass Prairie & Big Rivers (ETP) Landscape Conservation Cooperatives (LCCs) are convening State Wildlife Action Plan Coordinators in the Midwest states of Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, and Wisconsin to work across state boundaries to conserve species of greatest conservation need and their habitats. The 150-year old North Avenue Dam built on the Milwaukee River 5.1 kilometers (km) upstream from the confluence with Lake Michigan was removed in 1997. The dam, when it existed, created an impoundment approximately 3.7 km long and 33 hectares. Following many decades of impounding, sediment deposition, discharges from rural and urban stormwater, poorly treated wastewater discharges throughout the watershed and local combined sewer overflows into the river, the water quality and habitat was severely degraded. As a major threat to global biodiversity, climate change will alter where and how we manage conservation lands (e.g., parks, refuges, wildlife management areas, natural areas). As a new challenge with high uncertainty, many conservation practitioners have yet to consider how to minimize their greenhouse gas contributions (i.e., mitigation), or reduce the vulnerability of natural systems to climatechange (i.e., adaptation). This data represents fish samples collected by Fisheries and Water Resource staff of the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources between 1945 to 2014. Only electrofishing data were included in this dataset. Data include both community index sampling and targeted gamefish data from lakes, large rivers and wadeable streams. Data were restructured to meet MARIS standards. MARIS is an internet-based information sharing network that allows multiple states to provide a common set of variables via a single web interface. Overview This project examines the ecological impacts of several introduced and expanding forest insects and diseases on forest habitats across the northeastern US and upper Lake States region. This project connects scientists and managers from federal, tribal and state agencies and nongovernmental organizations to exchange information and establish common priorities for management of terrestrial wildlife populations. To achieve these goals, we are organizing interactive workshops with partners across the region. In year 2, we will assess the risk posed by climate change and other major stressors to a subset of priority species (as identified by regional partners). This assessment will integrate available data and scientific understanding in a transparent process, detailing assumptions and uncertainties to project population-level responses of target species to climate change.

Description of Work U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) scientists will assess the hydrology, water quality, and response to simulated changes in phosphorus loading of the Winnebago Pool Lakes, Wisconsin. Total annual phosphorus and total suspended sediment loads will be estimated at various monitored locations throughout the Upper Fox and Wolf River Watershed using a rating curve method or GCLAS with streamflow monitored by the USGS and water quality data collected by the Wisconsin DNR. Researchers downscaled projections of maximum and minimum temperature and precipitation across a large extent east of the Rocky Mountains to the Atlantic Coast. The data is probabilistic in nature, providing flexibility in incorporating climate information into impact assessments. Statistical techniques were used for the downscaling and it retains a reasonable representation of daily extreme events, such as intense precipitation or extreme temperatures. This network of inland streams, wetlands and water bodies is a composite of two layers from the National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NHD+ flow lines and water bodies), and all available wetlands from the National Wetlands Inventory (NWI) and Wisconsin Wetlands Inventory (WWI). In combination, these layers provide a network template of inland corridors for assessing relative vulnerability to future invasions of Phragmites.

This project directly addresses the need for integration of climate change information and strategies into Wisconsin’s Wildlife Action Plan (WWAP) as identified by Upper Midwest and Great Lakes Land Conservation Cooperative. Wisconsin’s WWAP is used as a major conservation planning tool by state agencies and partners, but this tool currently lacks information on climate change. During the 1993 flood on the Upper Mississippi River System (UMRS), observational information was obtained by State and Federal agencies participating in the Long Term Resource Monitoring Program (LTRMP). The LTRMP is managed by the National Biological Service, with additional oversight provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engingeers. The data summarized in this report focus on physical, chemical, and biological conditions occurring during the flood.
