The US Geological Survey, in cooperation with the National Park Service, mapped 35 7.5-minute quadrangles, within a 2-mile-wide+ corridor centered on the Parkway, from BLRI (Blue Ridge Parkway) Mile Post (MP) 0 near Afton, Virginia southward to MP 218 at Cumberland Knob, approximately 1.3 km south of the Virginia – North Carolina State Line. Detailed bedrock geologic mapping for this project was conducted at 1:24,000-scale by systematically traversing roads, trails, creeks, and ridges within and adjacent to the 2-mile-wide+ corridor along the 216.9-mile length of the BLRI in Virginia. Geologic data at more than 23,000 station points were collected during this project (September 2009 – February 2014), with approximately...

The ViTexOCR script presents a new method for extracting navigation data from videos with text overlays using optical character recognition (OCR) software. Over the past few decades, it was common for videos recorded during surveys to be overlaid with real-time geographic positioning satellite chyrons including latitude, longitude, date and time, as well as other ancillary data (such as speed, heading, or user input identifying fields). Embedding these data into videos provides them with utility and accuracy, but using the location data for other purposes, such as analysis in a geographic information system, is not possible when only available on the video display. Extracting the text data from imagery using software...

These data are from a 1998 multibeam survey of the sea floor offshore of Fire Island Inlet, New York. There are five datasets: bathymetry grid, shaded-relief image, backscatter intensity image, shaded-relief colored by backscatter intensity image, and trackline navigation. The bathymetry shows the shape of the sea floor. Of particular interest are the size, shape, and orientation of bed forms that may indicate sediment movement. The shaded-relief image provides a visualization of the bathymetry that accentuates small features that cannot be effectively shown as contours alone. The image of backscatter intensity provides qualitative information on the sediment texture and roughness of the sea floor. The image of...

Filtered water samples were collected by the USGS National Water Quality Program (NWQP) Southeastern Stream Quality Assessment (SESQA) from 59 perennial, wadeable (less than 10 m width and 1 m depth at base-flow) headwater stream sites in watersheds with varying degrees of urban land use in four states. Dataset includes sample site locations and information, analytical method information, water sample pharmaceutical concentrations and summary statistics, and corresponding watershed land-use-land-cover data and data dictionary.

NOTE: This data release has been deprecated. In support of the USGS LandCarbon project, field observations of stream and lake carbon gas fluxes and other water-quality data were collected from surface waters in the conterminous US. The sampling was designed to cover a variety of geographic, climatic, and environmental settings to better understand the ranges and distributions of carbon gas fluxes from surface waters. Field observations of carbon gas concentration and flux were paired with laboratory measurements of stream chemical characteristics. Locations were derived from field GPS values or from listed coordinates of USGS streamgages located at the sampling site. Discharge data was either measured in the field...

Modeling streamflow is an important approach for understanding landscape-scale drivers of flow and estimating flows where there are no streamgage records. In this study conducted by the U.S. Geological Survey in cooperation with Colorado State University, the objectives were to model streamflow metrics on small, ungaged streams in the Upper Colorado River Basin and identify streams that are potentially threatened with becoming intermittent under drier climate conditions. The Upper Colorado River Basin is a region that is critical for water resources and also projected to experience large future climate shifts toward a drying climate. A random forest modeling approach was used to model the relationship between streamflow...
