Water-supply lakes are the primary source of water for many communities throughout Missouri. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of lake capacity are important for managing and predicting adequate water-supply. Many of the water-supply lakes in Missouri were previously surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) in the early 2000s (Richards, 2013) and in 2013 (Huizinga, 2014); however, years of potential sedimentation may have resulted in reduced water storage capacity. Periodic bathymetric surveys are useful to update the area/capacity table and to determine changes in the bathymetric surface. In April and May 2023, the USGS, in cooperation with the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (MoDNR) and...

A hydrodynamic and water-quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) was developed of a 21-mile reach of the upper Illinois River including a 3-mile reach of a major tributary, the Fox River. The CE-QUAL-W2 model is 2-dimensional in the vertical and longitudinal directions and averaged over the lateral direction. Continuous water quality and streamgage data provided time-series data for model boundary conditions. Discrete velocity, cross-section area, and temperature profiles at several locations within the study reach provided model calibration data. The model was calibrated to 2021 and 2022 observed data and validated with 2020 data. Model output consisted of 2-dimensional, laterally averaged hydrodynamic and water-temperature...

The Louisiana State Legislature created the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed pursuant to these acts specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to arresting coastal wetlands loss. This data set includes mosaicked aerial photographs for the Dedicated Dredging on the Barataria Basin Landbridge (BA-36) project for 2018 and 2021. This data is used as a basemap land-water classifications. It also serves as a visual tool for project managers to help them identify any obvious problems...

Groundwater samples collected from the Edwards aquifer in south-central Texas were analyzed for water-quality data to assess aquifer susceptibility to contaminants. Water-quality data included environmental tracers of groundwater age (tritium, tritiogenic helium-3, sulfur hexafluoride, carbon-14, and radiogenic helium-4), calibrated to lumped parameter models (LPMs). Groundwater samples were collected from monitoring wells, domestic-supply wells, and public-supply wells during 2017 and 2018. This data release includes seven tables detailing these data. The final estimates for mean groundwater ages determined for samples from 65 wells ranged from 4 years to 45,400 years, with a median of 25 years. Table 1 provides...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), in cooperation with the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT), deployed RQ-30 surface velocimetry sensors (hereinafter referred to as “RQ-30 sensors”) made by Sommer Messtechnik to collect radar gage-height data, cross section area, surface velocity, learned surface velocity, discharge, and learned discharge at 80 streamgages located in stream reaches with varying hydrologic and hydraulic characteristics. Land-use types in the contributing drainage basins included agricultural, forest, mixed, and coastal, that are common in central, east, and southeast Texas. Many of the drainage basins and streams have relatively low gradients. To test the efficacy of the remote-sensing methods,...

The U.S. Geological Survey simulated the drift and dispersal of invasive carp eggs and larvae in the Maumee River, Ohio, using the Fluvial Egg Drift Simulator (FluEgg) (Garcia and others, 2013; Domanski, 2020). The hydraulic inputs used in the FluEgg simulations were generated using a one-dimensional Hydrologic Engineering Center-River Analysis System (HEC-RAS) 5.0.7 model of the Maumee River (HEC-RAS, 2020). HEC-RAS simulations and FluEgg simulations were run for both steady and unsteady flow conditions. This data release contains an archive of the relevant files to document and run the HEC-RAS and FluEgg simulations of the Maumee River as well as the simulation outputs. MODFLOW-6 with the Groundwater Flow (GWF) and Groundwater Transport (GWT) models was used to simulate the geohydrology of the aquifer system of the Paradox Valley in western Colorado. Salinity of the Colorado River is a major concern in both the United States and the Republic of Mexico. The Colorado River and its tributaries supply water for about 40 million people and irrigation of about 5.5 million acres in the United States, and for about 3 million people and irrigation of about 500,000 acres in Mexico. In Paradox Valley, groundwater transports salt dissolved from buried halite to the Dolores River and is a major natural contributor to river salinity in the Upper Colorado River Basin. Since July 1996, the Bureau...

This U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) data release provides the data used to predict areas with the greatest probability of ephemeral stream channel instability on north side of the Grand Valley in western Colorado, during 2018-20. The USGS developed a method for automatically extracting channel cross-section geometry from existing remotely sensed terrain models. Based on estimated flood stage and surrogate streamflows, hydraulic characteristics were calculated. The channel geometries and hydraulic characteristics were used to estimate channel stability using a statistical model. Cross-section stabilities were determined from a stream channel stability assessment for a subset of 1,406 visited (field observed) locations...

Open pit uranium mining in Atascosa, Karnes, and Live Oak Counties in the Texas gulf coast region was active during the second half of the 20th century. Understanding the history of these mining operations is important for proper management and restoration. Although some mines have extensive records documenting the locations and extents of mining pits and mine waste-rock piles, and provide descriptions of reclamation activities, abandoned mines with little to no such documentation are present on the landscape. A multiple lines of evidence approach using lidar derivatives and multispectral remote sensing temporal analysis (Stengel, 2022) was developed to (1) identify uranium mine waste-rock, wastewater, and land...

Wind speed, wind direction (3D) and gas concentrations are measured at 10 Hz and statistically processed using the eddy covariance technique to half-hour estimates of flux rates of gas exchange between the ecosystem and atmosphere. Three gases were measured: carbon dioxide, methane and water vapor. Simultaneous measurements of environmental drivers are also measured and recorded as half-hourly values: photosynthetic photon flux density, downwelling and upwelling short and long wave radiation, air temperature, relative humidity and precipitation. Variable names and units follow AmeriFlux and FLUXNET standards. This site is a flotant herbaceous freshwater marsh in Salvador Wildlife Management Area near Luling, LA.
