This project evaluates the connections between climate change impacts and health in Bristol Bay communities. Climate change impacts were assessed through the lens of public health, with an eye towards the potential effects on disease, injury, food and water security, and mental health. Three focal communities were included in this assessment: Nondalton, a lake community, Levelock, a river community, and Pilot Point, a coastal community. The resulting assessment reports will be used to assist focal communities, as well as neighboring communities, in addressing climate-change related issues.

We propose to support the revision and implementation of the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s Conservation Blueprint by integrating its Ecosystem Indicators into a structured decision support system that makes explicit how the Indicators are interrelated and how these will respond to management and policy interventions aimed at improving the conservation status of the South Atlantic region. Our specific objectives are to (1) develop ecological production functions that predict theecological impacts of selected conservation actions relative to current conditions, and to propagate these impacts through other affected systems or functions; (2) codify protocols for updating and curating geospatial...

This data set represents the extent, approximate location and type of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the United States and its Territories. These data delineate the areal extent of wetlands and surface waters as defined by Cowardin et al. (1979). Certain wetland habitats are excluded from the National mapping program because of the limitations of aerial imagery as the primary data source used to detect wetlands. These habitats include seagrasses or submerged aquatic vegetation that are found in the intertidal and subtidal zones of estuaries and near shore coastal waters. Some deepwater reef communities (coral or tuberficid worm reefs) have also been excluded from the inventory. These habitats, because of their...

Measurements of suspended sediment concentration, water velocity, suspended-sediment particle size, and suspended-sediment particle settling velocity were collected to estimate suspended-sediment flux and investigate sediment transport processes at Dumbarton Bridge in San Francisco Bay (NWIS station 373015122071000) from calendar year 2018 to 2019. Data were collected using: stationary and boat-mounted acoustic Doppler current meters (ADCP, a 1 MHz Nortek Aquadopp and a 1200kHz Teledyne RiverPro, respectively), four stationary and one profiling multiparameter water quality profiling sondes (YSI 6920), a stationary acoustic backscattering sensor (ABS, Sequoia LISST-ABS), a stationary laser diffraction particle size...
The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) works closely with the Mississippi Department of Transportation (MDOT) to provide information to be used by the MDOT for design of highway-drainage structures. MDOT spends millions of dollars annually for highway construction. Streamflow records, hydrologic analyses of basins, and hydraulic analyses of flooding potential at proposed highway crossings help the MDOT to make more informed decisions on the use of highway construction funding. Flood-frequency and hydraulic characteristics at highway crossings are determined from historical flood-elevation data recovered by the USGS, cross-section data, and correlations with data from nearby gaging stations. Additional streamflow data...
Management efforts of the tidally-restricted Herring River in Wellfleet, MA include research to understand pre-restoration sediment conditions. Submerged multiparameter sondes that measure optical turbidity were deployed at four sites landward and seaward of the Herring River restriction. Periodically, the sites were visited and additional turbidity measurements were collected with a handheld multiparameter sonde, and water samples were collected for determination of suspended-sediment concentration (SSC). The handheld turbidity measurements were regressed against SSC using a repeated median regression to determine a calibration curve for calibrating the turbidity time-series data to SSC. The SSC derived from the...

This data release contains coastal wetland synthesis products for Massachusetts, developed in collaboration with the Massachusetts Office of Coastal Zone Management. Metrics for resiliency, including unvegetated to vegetated ratio (UVVR), marsh elevation, and tidal range are calculated for smaller units delineated from a digital elevation model, providing the spatial variability of physical factors that influence wetland health. The U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with tools to estimate the vulnerability and ecosystem service potential of these wetlands....

In 2012, Hurricane Sandy struck the Northeastern US causing devastation among coastal ecosystems. Post-hurricane marsh restoration efforts have included sediment deposition, planting of vegetation, and restoring tidal hydrology. The work presented here is part of a larger project funded by the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation (NFWF) to monitor the post-restoration ecological resilience of coastal ecosystems in the wake of Hurricane Sandy. The U.S. Geological Survey Woods Hole Coastal and Marine Science Center made in-situ observations during 2018-2019 and 2022-2023 at two sites: Thompsons Beach, NJ and Stone Harbor, NJ. Marsh creek hydrodynamics and water quality including currents, waves, water levels, water...

The Blueprint 2.0 Data Gallery is a website dedicated to the final Blueprint 2.0 spatial data. This website is located on the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative’s Conservation Planning Atlas. On this website, users can explore the final Blueprint 2.0 spatial data as well as the spatial data used to create Blueprint 2.0. This website features an interactive mapping feature so that users who do not have access to desktop GIS can explore the spatial data.

The purpose of the Kailapa Community Resilience Plan (KCRP) is to create a roadmap for future land use development, promote the community’s ability to thrive, and become a truly Resilient Hawaiian Community. Thriving includes the ability to adapt to and manage environmental threats as the climate changes, and be prepared and aware of potential economic, social, and physical vulnerabilities. The KCRP identifies optimal land uses to support a healthy community that manages all the resources available to it. The Plan identifies a pathway leading to how a resilient Kailapa could look like in the future, and most importantly what steps it would take to get there.

Natural and anthropogenic contaminants, pathogens, and viruses are found in soils and sediments throughout the United States. Enhanced dispersion and concentration of these environmental health stressors in coastal regions can result from sea level rise and storm-derived disturbances. The combination of existing environmental health stressors and those mobilized by natural or anthropogenic disasters could adversely impact the health and resilience of coastal communities and ecosystems. This dataset displays the exposure potential to environmental health stressors in the Edwin B. Forsythe National Wildlife Refuge (EBFNWR), which spans over Great Bay, Little Egg Harbor, and Barnegat Bay in New Jersey, USA. Exposure...

Unvegetated to vegetated marsh ratio (UVVR) in the Fire Island National Seashore and Central Great South Bay salt marsh complex, is computed based on conceptual marsh units defined by Defne and Ganju (2018). UVVR was calculated based on U.S. Department of Agriculture National Agriculture Imagery Program (NAIP) 1-meter resolution imagery. Through scientific efforts initiated with the Hurricane Sandy Science Plan, the U.S. Geological Survey has been expanding national assessment of coastal change hazards and forecast products to coastal wetlands, including the Fire Island National Seashore and Central Great South Bay salt marshes, with the intent of providing Federal, State, and local managers with tools to estimate...

Coastal wetlands are major global carbon sinks, however, they are heterogeneous and dynamic ecosystems. To characterize spatial and temporal variability in a New England salt marsh, static chamber measurements of greenhouse gas (GHG) fluxes were compared among major plant-defined zones (high marsh dominated by Distichlis spicata and a zone of invasive Phragmites australis) during 2013 and 2014 growing seasons. Two sediment cores were collected in 2015 from the Phragmites zone to support previously reported core collections from the high marsh sites (Gonneea and others 2018). Collected cores were up to 70 cm in length with dry bulk density ranges from 0.04 to 0.33 grams per cubic centimeter and carbon content 22.4%...
