Geographic relationships among energy infrastructure development, regional economic linkages, and the environment is crucial for understanding the impacts of Appalachian energy extraction activities and for regional planning efforts focused on the ecosystem services that may be affected. The U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA) provides impartial and independent data on the nation’s energy infrastructure, its sources, flows, and end uses, as well as forecasts and outlooks. Location information for specific extraction activities, as well as power plants and other supply chain components, can help reveal the regional nature of specific impacts and the often large distances between those effects and end-use...

Soil depth (cm) affects communities primarily because shallow soils (usually on steep slopes or ridgetops) limit deep-rooted plants. A "restrictive layer" is a nearly continuous layer that has one or more physical, chemical, or thermal properties that significantly impede the movement of water and air through the soil or that restrict roots or otherwise provide an unfavorable root environment. if no restrictive layer is described in a map unit, it is represented by the ">200' depth class, This attribute is actually recorded as three separate values in the database. A low value and a high value indicate the range of this attribute for the soil component. A "representative" value indicates the expected value of this...

This data product contains estimates of habitat connectivity for desert bighorn sheep. The analysis area was a 236,000 square kilometers that encompassed the Navajo Nation, which includes portions of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah. The estimates of habitat quality were created with spatially explicit habitat variables and either an expert-based linear combination process (for mountain lion and mule deer) or a generalized linear mixed model-based estimation that used radio-collar telemetry data (for desert bighorn sheep, black bear, and pronghorn; collected between 2005-2011). Habitat variables varied among species but included vegetation type, terrain ruggedness, topographic position index (TPI), road density, distance...

Fresh and Saltwater Connectivity This layer was one of the old South Atlantic LCC indicators in the waterscapes ecosystem. It was an index of dams preventing fish migration between rivers and the ocean. Fresh and saltwater connectivity was not performing well as an indicator and could not be used in Blueprint 2.0. This indicator was replaced in Blueprint 2.1 with a new migratory fish connectivity indicator. Reason for Selection Barriers to connectivity between rivers/streams and the ocean can strongly impact diadromous fish and alter natural movement of sediments, are easy to monitor and model, and are widely used and understood by diverse partners. Input Data Southeast Aquatic Connectivity Assessment Project:...

This dataset explores the physical reality of the population growth from 2005 to 2060 without changes to existing land use policy or gross urban density. The land use suitability analysis displayed in this dataset was performed by the GeoPlan Center for 1000 Friends of Florida and is a companion study to "A Time for Leadership: Growth Management and Florida 2060" prepared for 1000 Friends of Florida by researchers at Georgia Tech's Center for Quality Growth and Regional Development. GeoPlan's project was undertaken using relatively straightforward geographic information systems (GIS) suitability analysis constructed on a foundation of clearly articulated assumptions. The three key assumptions were: 1)...
