The purpose of this data set is support resource allocation decisions (i.e. where to invest conservation effort) within the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative. It represents a relative ranking of HUC12 watersheds according to the quantity and quality of habitat as described in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Watersheds (HUC12) were ranked by the presence, quantity and quality of the Upland Hardwood (Woodland) habitat system (includes upland hardwood forest, oak-hickory forest, and oak-hickory woodlands) within the 5 sub-geographies of the GCPO LCC region. The grassland condition index raster data layer assigns to each 30 meter pixel in the GCPO a condition index score generated by the presence or absence of a set of desired conditions such as patch size, vegetation height, etc. This grassland bar code layer indicates which conditions contributed to the index value score, and by how much, by use of a nine-digit code. Systematic conservation planning is well suited to address the many large-scale biodiversity conservation challenges facing the Appalachian region. However, broad, well-connected landscapes will be required to sustain many of the natural resources important to this area into the future. If these landscapes are to be resilient to impending change, it will likely require an orchestrated and collaborative effort reaching across jurisdictional and political boundaries. This dataset represents the cumulative result of multi-season classification of land cover in the GCPO LCC geography to NatureServe Ecological Systems based on 2011 seasonal Landsat Satellite Imagery. The approach used a Random Forest algorithm and several dozen input data layers to classify land cover at a 30 m pixel resolution. The amount, configuration, and condition of grasslands, prairies, and savannas in the Gulf Coastal Plains and Ozarks Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GCPO LCC) was assessed at 30 meter spatial resolution. We developed a composite land cover approach for use in the GCPO LCC ecological assessment of upland hardwood woodlands and forests. These datasets reflect the upland hardwood “mask” that represents the composite of 3 or 4 datasets, from which the remaining landscape endpoints defined in the LCC Integrated Science Agenda will be evaluated. The mask indicates where on the landscape we estimate upland hardwood woodlands and forests to be found in any condition. Dead and downed wood in any forest serves an important ecological function with regards to decomposition and nutrient cycling in forest ecosystems. It also provides critical habitat for many reptile and amphibian species, such as the red-backed salamander (Plethodon cinereus), in addition to providing an important food source for insects and detritivores upon which many other species in the system depend. These layers represent estimates of imputed tree density calculated as part of the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems. The GCPO Integrated Science Agenda targets tree densities of around 40 trees/acre for upland hardwood woodland systems and around 80 trees/acre for upland hardwood forest systems. These metrics should be correlates with target endpoints of basal area and canopy cover, though not entirely synonymous. We again used plot-level FIA data imputed across the GCPO LCC to assess tree density. The model was acquired from Tyler Wagner (U.S. Geological Survey) (DeWeber & Wagner, 2014). Model outputs were composed of Ecological Drainage Units (EDUs), each of which was assigned a resulting mean predicted occurrence probability. The study region was determined by the Eastern Brook Trout Joint Venture (EBTJV) and represents the native range of the species on the East Coast. The polygons of interest were derived from the NHD plus dataset, with local catchments located at least 90% within the study region boundary. Hellbender presence data was acquired from NatureServe and limited to points dating from 1980 to the present, with individual points adapted from the available data. Geospatial data was acquired from the U.S. Geological Survey’s National Land Cover Database (NLCD) and the Horizon Systems Corporation National Hydrography Dataset (NHD) Version 2. The study was conducted over the extent of the Appalachian LCC. The Condition Index ranks pixels (250-m) according to how well they meet the Desired State for the Open Pine habitat system, which is described qualitatively and quantitatively in the GCPO LCC’s draft Integrated Science Agenda (v4). Higher values indicate sites closer to the Desired State. Value of 1 indicates areas appropriate for restoration but currently under an alternative land use (i.e. potential habitat). This data represents an assessment of forest patch size used in the ecological assessment of upland hardwood systems by the GCPO LCC. We used a combination of remote sensing products including 2011 National Land Cover Database (NLCD) forest classes and the 2011 MAV forest classification layer produced by the Lower Mississippi Valley Joint Venture to delineate patches of all forest types in the GCPO LCC. Using GIS, the SILVIS Lab at the University of Wisconsin-Madison calculated housing and population counts at the block group level with data from the decennial U.S. Census to produce a spatially explicit dataset for the conterminous U.S. This data can help to understand where on the landscape the most and the least dense populations of people live. Housing density can be used as an indicator of urbanization and land-use intensification.
