The SRLCC provided funds to the states of Arizona and New Mexico to support development of the states Crucial Habitat Assessment Tools (CHATs) which provide a decision support system to better incorporate wildlife values, sensitive animals and plants, and important ecosystem features into land use decision-making to reduce conflicts and surprises.Several states have released wildlife mapping tools that are the foundation for displaying crucial wildlife and corridor information. The state and regional CHATs are non-regulatory, and give project planners and the general public access to credible scientific data on a broad scale for use in project analysis, siting and planning. This includes large-scale development...

EARTH SCIENCE SERVICES > MODELS > CLIMATE CHANGE IMPACT ASSESSMENT MODELS,
This data set represents the extent, approximate location and type of wetlands and deepwater habitats in the conterminous United States. These data delineate the areal extent of wetlands and surface waters as defined by Cowardin et al. (1979). Certain wetland habitats are excluded from the National mapping program because of the limitations of aerial imagery as the primary data source used to detect wetlands. These habitats include seagrasses or submerged aquatic vegetation that are found in the intertidal and subtidal zones of estuaries and near shore coastal waters. Some deepwater reef communities (coral or tuberficid worm reefs) have also been excluded from the inventory. These habitats, because of their depth,...

This pilot mapping project, produced by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (Service) in collaboration with staff from the North Carolina Wildlife Resources Commission (NCWRC), provides general information on the potential risk to species of concern and sensitive habitats from proposed wind energy projects in the coastal plain of North Carolina. The map is intended to assist wind energy developers with appropriate siting of proposed wind energy projects that are subject to the Service’s 2012 Land-Based Wind Energy Guidelines, particularly during the Tier 1(Preliminary Site Evaluation) and Tier 2 (Site Characterization) stages of site evaluation. It is intended to be used as a general guidance, and should not be used...

When a species is proposed for listing as endangered or threatened under the Endangered Species Act, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service must consider whether there are areas of habitat believed to be essential the species’ conservation. Those areas may be proposed for designation as “critical habitat.” Critical habitat is a term defined and used in the Act. It is a specific geographic area(s) that contains features essential for the conservation of a threatened or endangered species and that may require special management and protection. Critical habitat may include an area that is not currently occupied by the species but that will be needed for its recovery. An area is designated as “critical habitat” after the...

This data set depicts simplified boundaries of National Wildlife Refuges administered by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service within the Mississippi River Basin. These boundaries are simplified from the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Real Estate Interest data layer containing polygons representing tracts of land (parcels) in which the Service has a real estate interest. Interior boundaries between parcels were dissolved to produce a single set of simplified external boundaries for each feature. These are resource grade mapping representations of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service boundaries. For legal descriptions of the land represented here, contact the USFWS Realty Office. This map layer was compiled by the U.S....

PURPOSE: The exchange of lands between the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Doyon, Limited is proposed to enhance the Yukon Flats National Wildlife Refuge of Alaska. Doyon is the largest private landowner in the refuge and an Alaska Native regional corporation that has been interested in acquiring federal oil and gas interests since the refuge was established in 1980. Under the terms of an agreement in principle between the FWS and Doyon, the U.S. government would receive fee title to lease 150,000 acres of Doyon lands, including both surface and subsurface rights, with priority fish and wildlife habitats that can be incorporated into the refuge. Doyon would receive fee title to 110,000 acres of refuge lands,...

The Grizzly Bear Recovery Zone (GBRZ) for the Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem (GYE) delineates the area inside the GYE where demographic and habitat criteria were applied, monitored, and evaluated to achieve recovered status of the Yellowstone grizzly bear population. The GBRZ was established by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS) in 1993 as part of the Recovery Plan for grizzly bears in the lower 48 conterminous United States. The recovery zone boundary identifies the known distribution of bears at that time and encompasses seasonal habitats needed to support a recovered population. The GYE recovery zone spans portions of Montana, Idaho and Wyoming and includes parts of 5 National Forests (Beaverhead-Deerlodge,...
To create a wall-to-wall surface of landscape permeability we used the software CIRCUITSCAPE (McRae and Shah 2009), an innovative program that models species and population movements as if they were electric current flowing through a landscape of variable resistance. Circuit modeling is conceptually aligned with the concept of landscape permeability because it recognizes that movement through a landscape is affected by a variety of impediments, and it quantifies the degree and the directional outcomes of the compounding effects. One output is a “flow” map that shows the behavior of directional flows and highlights concentration areas and pinch-points.The results can highlight locally and regionally significant places...

The Bird Conservancy of the Rockies will use, combine and optimize an array of remote sensing techniques to identify the most efficient process that characterizes grasslands and level of shrub component in those grasslands. The project will classify a pilot area, the Janos Grassland Priority Conservation Area, which contains the majority of the Janos Biosphere Reserve, using a variety of remote sensing approaches. In the process they will identify the best techniques for decomposing grass-shrub intermix at low densities and identify the best approaches for large scale application of remote sensing to classify the desert grasslands and shrublands.

This project will be focused on hosting 2-3 workshops in 2013 to train people to conduct the Springs Stewardship Institute’s spring assessment protocol and promote it as a standardized method. This will facilitate standardized data collection across the landscape that can contribute to a broad-scale inventory and assessment of springs, seeps, and aquatic resources throughout the Desert LCC.

Landscape conservation design is an opportunity for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s National Wildlife Refuge System (NWRS) to work collaboratively with partners to develop and implement a landscape approach that ensures our priority resources will have the capacity to cope with and respond to future change. This research models patterns of climate connectivity to map linkages among protected areas that promote long-term landscape connectivity across Alaska and northwest Canada under projected climate change. Using spatial data on current land use and climate patterns, and circuit theory-based connectivity modeling approaches, this research identifies corridors that follow climate gradients and avoid human modified...

Point shapefile of Wind Turbine locations in Wyoming as of December 2010. Turbine location and attribute data extracted from the FAA Obstruction Evaluation Database (https://oeaaa.faa.gov/oeaaa/external/portal.jsp). The FAA requires evaluation of any wind turbine (or structure) over 200ft. Therfore any wind turbine under 200ft would not be included in this data layer. In 2008 the FAA put a focus on wind turbines creating region categories specifically for wind turbines. With this, records for wind turbines before 2008 are less inclusive. The FAA database provides no determination of Wind Turbines that have been built and Wind Turbines that are still in planning stages. Therefore this layer includes Wind Turbines...

Caribou are an important source of food for residents of western Alaska, but as environmental conditions and migration patterns change, some local hunters have encountered difficulty accessing the Mulchatna caribou herd (MCH). Existing data describe MCH harvests, herd movements, and caribou abundance through time, but an investigation drawing from traditional ecological knowledge (TEK) has not occurred. This project will integrate TEK with existing knowledge of caribou movements and subsistence harvests. Targeted stakeholders include local tribes, including Bristol Bay Native Association (BBNA), local village councils, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service, Lake Clark National Park and Preserve (LCNP), and...
