American pikas (Ochotona princeps) are small lagomorphs that live in mountainous talus areas of western North America. Studies on the histopathology of American pikas are limited. This report summarizes the clinical histories, and gross and histologic findings of 12 American pikas, including nine captive and three wild animals. Death was often attributed to stress (transport, handling, and anesthesia) with few to no premonitory clinical signs. Two cases died due to infection: one had bacterial pyogranulomatous dermatitis, cellulitis, and lymphadenitis with sepsis; the other case had fungal necrotizing colitis. Incidental parasite infections included sarcocystosis, nematodiasis (oxyurids), and ectoparasitism. Most...

The Yǻyaguak (Mariana Swiftlet; Aerodramus bartschi) is an endangered cave-roosting species native to Guam and southern Mariana Islands, Micronesia. On May 24-25, 2023, Guam was hit by the category-4 Typhoon Mawar, which brought wide-spread destruction to the island. Approximately 6 weeks prior to the typhoon in April 2023 we conducted surveys of the three known colonies of Yǻyaguak at Mahlac, Maemong, and Fachi caves. This April 2023 pre-Mawar survey provided a baseline population estimate prior to Typhoon Mawar’s landfall. In July 2023, we re-surveyed the caves to estimate colony size and assess whether the cave colonies experienced significant declines in the immediate aftermath of the storm. In November 2023,...

This data release provides a digital inventory of the Robert S. Thompson packrat midden collection consisting of 1,740 midden samples and subsamples primarily collected in the Great Basin region of Nevada, as well as in Arizona, California, Colorado, Oklahoma, Utah, and Washington, USA, by Robert S. Thompson (USGS scientist emeritus) and others between 1977 and 2006. Middens are waste piles composed of the urine and feces of packrats (Neotoma spp.) also containing plant materials, bones, and insects. Radiocarbon dating of middens indicates they can be preserved for as long as 50,000 years, and their fossil plant assemblages document changes in plant community composition through time, providing important records...

Mid-sized mammals (i.e., mesomammals) fulfill important ecological roles, serving as essential scavengers, predators, pollinators, and seed dispersers in the ecosystems they inhabit. Consequently, declines in mesomammal populations have the potential to disrupt ecological processes and degrade ecosystems. However, ecosystems characterized by high functional redundancy, where multiple species can fulfill similar ecological roles, may be less impacted by the loss of mesomammals and other vertebrates. The Greater Everglades Ecosystem in southern Florida is a historically biodiverse region that has recently been impacted by multiple anthropogenic threats, most notably the introduction of the Burmese python (Python bivittatus)....

Anaerobic microcosm experiments were conducted in April-May 2018 with PFAS-contaminated soil from a U.S. Army installation (Fort Drum, New York) and simulated groundwater. All microcosms, except for a live sediment control, were amended with perfluorooctanesulfonate (PFOS), perfluorooctanoate (PFOA), and 6:2 fluorotelomer sulfonate (6:2 FtS). Replicate treatments were prepared with and without bioaugmentation with the WBC-2 dehalogenating culture and with and without addition of chlorinated volatile organic compounds (1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane and trichloroethylene). Two additional treatments were prepared containing granular activated carbon. All microcosms were prepared in duplicate and sacrificed for sampling....

The Louisiana State Legislature created the Coastal Wetlands Planning, Protection and Restoration Act (CWPPRA) in order to conserve, restore, create and enhance Louisiana's coastal wetlands. The wetland restoration plans developed pursuant to these acts specifically require an evaluation of the effectiveness of each coastal wetlands restoration project in achieving long-term solutions to arresting coastal wetlands loss. This data set includes mosaicked aerial photographs for the Dedicated Dredging on the Barataria Basin Landbridge (BA-36) project for 2018 and 2021. This data is used as a basemap land-water classifications. It also serves as a visual tool for project managers to help them identify any obvious problems...

The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife Resources and Tennessee Wildlife Resource Agency conducted observations onboard commercial fishing vessels. During these observations total lengths were collected from a subset of that capture which we have used to develop a length-based stock assessment of invasive carp. The first dataset represent harvest from the invasive carp harvest program in Kentucky and Tennessee from 2009-2021 only in Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake where the majority of harvest occurs. The second data are length data from a subset of those fish harvested in 2018-2021. The last dataset are the results from a survey delivered to fishers participating in the invasive carp harvest program in Kentucky...

This dataset includes a number of datasets collected to assess the potential effects of GPS telemetry collars on free-roaming feral equid species in North America: horses and burros. The behavior dataset (Behavioral_data_collared_uncollared.csv) includes frequency of maintenance behaviors of collared and un-collared horses at Conger Herd Management Area (HMA), and burros at Lake Pleasant and Sinbad Herd Management Areas (HMAs). The dataset also includes data on collar effects to fur and superficial effects observed, showing the count of fur effects (i.e., sweaty neck, indented fur, broken fur) and superficial effects (chafe, wound, or scab) on horses and burros over the time that they wore a collar (Collar_fur_and_superficial_effects_over_time.csv)....

A set of experiments was conducted to determine the dietary clothianidin exposures that cause prepupal mortality in the absence of other adverse effects. Monarch larvae were raised from hatch to pupae on clothianidin contaminated swamp milkweed plants. Larval growth, larval survival, and prepupal survival were monitored throughout the experiments in which the exposures ranged from 1.4 – 2,793.1 ng/g leaf. Exposures of 5.4 – 46.9 ng/g leaf resulted exclusively in prepupal mortality while higher exposures of 1,042.4 – 2,793.1 ng/g leaf resulted exclusively in larval mortality. An LC50 and LC10 of 37 and 6 ng/g, respectively, were estimated based on prepupal mortality.

Data files contain the simulated mean daily environmental conditions experienced by particles (which can be assumed to be planktonic larval alewife or yellow perch) in Lake Michigan during March 15 - July 31 of past and future years. Simulations were generated by integrating a series of climatic, hydrodynamic, biogeochemical, and Lagrangian particle dispersion (LPD) models. For each year, 42,765 particles (i.e., each representing a theoretical larval fish) were released from coastal and nearshore locations and tracked sub-hourly for 50-days following their release. Each year's dataset summarizes individual particle experiences (e.g., light, zooplankton prey, temperature) into daily averages.
