This project will look at how climate change has altered hydrologic systems, Pacific salmon habitat, and survival of salmon in the Nooksack River watershed. It will develop an adaptation plan that can be adopted and integrated into management plans. Project Objectives for NPLCC funding: 1. Assess climate change impacts on fish and fish biology and inform salmon habitat restoration actions aimed at perpetuating all nine salmonid species in the Nooksack River basin in the face of climate change (partially funded by proposed NPLCC funding). 2. The Tongass National Forest has identified resources that are important to stakeholders and vulnerable to climate-related stressors. Cooperators will review an action plan and convene a workshop to be held in Southeast Alaska in 2016. The workshop will foster collaboration between scientists, managers, and stakeholders. Workshop goals include: sharing information about climate-related stressors and effects on NPLCC Priority Resources in the Tongass National Forest; developing strategic priorities for improving understanding, reducing risks, and increasing adaptive capacity and resilience; coordinating support for increasing knowledge and informing resource managers

This proposal is to deliver the pilot component of a wetland tracking project initiated by the CIJV in 2010. The wetland trend project will deliver an assessment of wetland trends and develop an approach for tracking wetland trends into the future; this will have relevance to conservation planning throughout transboundary ecological planning units, including Bird Conservation Regions (BCRs) 9 and 10, and the Cold Deserts and Western Cordillera Ecoregions (Figure 2). Sagebrush (Artemisia spp.)-dominated shrublands are one of the most widespread ecosystems in western North America but also among the most imperiled due to interactions among land use, fire, and exotic plants. Global climate change models predict an accelerated loss of sagebrush due to synergistic feedbacks among disturbance patterns and vegetation response; only 20% would remain under the most extreme scenario of >6 C increase by the end of this century (Fig. 1). Northern Arizona University will study how forest treatment practices and climate change may impact water balance across the Kaibab Plateau and critical habitats in lower elevations of the Grand Canyon. The project will include use of a forest landscape simulation model to examine how fuel treatments and prescribed burning will affect the resilience of forest ecosystems.
