The bull trout is an ESA-listed species that relies on cold stream environments across the Northwest and is expected to decline with climate change. Resource managers are charged with maintaining bull trout across their range, but monitoring this species is difficult and many populations have rarely or never been sampled. To reduce this uncertainty (and regulatory gridlock), we propose to coordinate a crowd-sourced field assessment of the distribution of bull trout in the U.S. by using inexpensive, reliable environmental DNA (eDNA) sampling. Samples collected by this multi-partner effort can be used to evaluate many other species (e.g., a biodiversity assessment) with no additional field costs and can serve as a...

The results of this proposed project would provide the first comprehensive identification of fisher distribution in the northern Rocky Mountains, which may serve as a baseline for identifying population trends and changes in distribution over time.A species distribution model will be constructed, using field data collected to date, that relates fisher presence observations to environmental variables (i.e., spring snow cover, minimum spring temperatures, annual rainfall, topographic position, elevation, and others). These environmental predictors will provide an indication of the contemporary distribution and environmental requirements of the species in the northern Rocky Mountains. Down-scaled global climate models...

FY2014There is increasing interest in climate change adaptation, particularly since the release of the Presidents Executive Order on Climate Preparedness in November, 2013, yet many field staff remain uncertain how to put adaptation into practice. Our goal with this project is to bridge the gap between the wealth of high-level climate adaptation guidance and the field staff who carry out specific regulatory processes, specifically Habitat Conservation Plans. Following best practices from the literature on linking science and management, we will begin with a focus on what people do rather than on the climate science. We will map the current HCP development and approval process in Region 8, identify where and how...

Topock Marsh is a large wetland adjacent to the Colorado River and main feature of Havasu National Wildlife Refuge (Havasu NWR) in southern Arizona. In 2010, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS) and Bureau of Reclamation began a project to improve water management capabilities at Topock Marsh and protect habitats and species. Initial construction required a drawdown, which caused below-average inflows and water depths in 2010-2011. Co-applicants Daniels and Haegele of FORT monitored Topock Marsh during the drawdown and immediately after, thus obtained information on immediate effects. However, stress from the drawdown may have a delayed effect on aquatic resources; additionally, significant changes to the infrastructure...

A “gateway” using Data Basin technology has been developed to serve the data integration, collaboration and outreach needs of the NPLCC. The gateway will continue to be a customized interface of the Data Basin platform that includes special branding, curation of spatial content, and direct links to selected sites in support of projects funded by and for the NPLCC . Conservation Biology Institute will add to the “gateway” a spatial data visualization tool to showcase priority data from the Pacific Marine and Estuarine Fish Habitat Partnership.

The primary objective of the research is to develop a rule-based decision support system to predict the relative vulnerability of nearshore species to climate change. The approach is designed to be applicable to fishes and invertebrates with limited data by predicting risk from readily avialable data, including species’ biogeographic distributions and natural history attributes. By evaluating multiple species and climate stressors, the approach allows an assessment of climate vulnerability across habitat types and the impact of specific climate alterations as well as their cumulative impact. A website with a rule-based application for rockfish and crabs is availalble at http://cbrat.org/.

In the tropics, ample freshwater is the primary resource supporting thriving human and ecological communities. In the Pacific Islands, many watersheds are threatened by climate change, urban encroachment, and invasion by water-demanding exotic plant species like strawberry guava (SG). To maintain an adequate freshwater supply, adaptive management strategies are needed to address these concerns while confronting operational barriers to implementation. We developed a prototype watershed decision support tool (WDST) that incorporated: (i) distributed hydrology modeling to quantify effects of climate change and SG invasion on freshwater yield; (ii) a decision support tool that linked potential changes in yield with...

This project used the NatureServe Climate Change Vulnerability Index tool to assess vulnerability of 140 bird species that breed in the Sierra Nevada and will develop a peer-reviewed Climate Change Adaptation Strategy for Sierra Nevada bird species that are most vulnerable to climate change. The Strategy provides recommendations for actions that managers can take now and in the future to bolster resilience to climate change.

Priority resources are the set of biological, ecological, and cultural features and ecological processes collaboratively identified as most important or most significant for the focus geography. These resources embody the key components of the Peninsular Florida Landscape Conservation Cooperative (PFLCC) vision, which is a collective vision that reflects the mission, vision, common interests, and values of the focus geography partners. The priority resources are the focus of the PFLCC’s planning, design and implementation of conservation strategies(Benscoter et al. 2015). In Spring 2015, PFLCC’s Steering committee unanimously voted to adopt the SWAP ( the Florida State Wildlife Action Plan) habitats as the basis...

This proposal outlines a collaborative regional effort to build a South Atlantic Ecosystem Model that will facilitate the connection of inland and coastal marine management strategies and actions to potential resource and economic impacts in estuarine and coastal marine environments, with the following two goals: 1. Improve and Expand the Functionality of the South Atlantic Landscape Conservation Cooperative Blueprint: The SALCC Blueprint is unique in its ability to connect across terrestrial, freshwater, and marine systems. Unfortunately, the availability of and quality of current models connecting impacts across those ecosystems are a major barrier for modeling efforts and Blueprint Users. Improving these models...

This project involved developing a new design for the South Atlantic LCC website (including development of new code and graphics/images as needed) and designing a factsheet template, an online newsletter template, a powerpoint template, and small info cards based on the modern website redesign. The project initially specified the Ning 3.0 platform, which changed to WordPress when Ning stopped supporting upgrades to Version 3.0.

The rapid expansion of pattern tile drainage (PTD) to enhance agricultural production in the Prairie Pothole Region (PPR) has the potential to negatively impact ecosystem services provided by wetlands. To better understand and assess these impacts we will develop a spatial database to provide a regional characterization of areas at risk to PTD. Spatial information in conjunction with existing data and models will be used to make preliminary projections on the effects of PTD on cosystem services such as duck production, water storage and water quality. Spatial information will be used to identify study sites that will be instrumented to quantify and model the effects of PTD systems on wetland hydrology; this information...

Climate change is expected to alter the distributions and community composition of stream fishes in the Great Lakes region in the 21st century, in part as a result of altered hydrological systems (stream temperature, streamflow, and habitat). Resource managers need information and tools to understand where fish species and stream habitats are expected to change under future conditions. Fish sample collections and environmental variables from multiple sources across the United States Great Lakes Basin were integrated and used to develop empirical models to predict fish species occurrence under present-day climate conditions. Random Forests models were used to predict the probability of occurrence of 13 lotic fish...

The Conservation Biology Institute will develop a Southern Rockies LCC Conservation Planning Atlas (SRLCC CPA) powered by Data Basin that will make it easier for resource managers and other stakeholders to discover, analyze, and interpret spatial data on priority topics including aquatic resource management and climate impacts. The SRLCC CPA will facilitate conservation planning, analyses and evaluation from common datasets and provide basic mapping capability to users without desktop GIS software. The SRLCC CPA will most directly support science needs in Funding Category II, however because of the design of this flexible web-based platform, it can be used to inform management decisions spanning a wide range of...

Consistent and accurate landscape datasets are important foundational products for ecological analyses and for understanding and anticipating the effects of climate change on forested, agricultural, and freshwater systems across the U.S. and Canada. The objective of this project was to extend an existing terrestrial habitat map of the north Atlantic U.S. to Atlantic Canada and southern Quebec, using and modeling field-collected data combined with national and provincial datasets. This GIS map 1) provides a foundation upon which further research, such as species vulnerability analyses, can advance, 2) allows each relevant state and province to identify terrestrial habitats consistently across borders, 3) allows for...

The project objective is to transfer to California a previously developed prioritization framework that combines intraspecific genetic and morphological variation with traditionally used indices of biodiversity, and test its general utility for conservation prioritization. This project will integrate existing data on intraspecific variation of multiple species in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreational Area with climate data and space-borne measurements of the environment to identify areas with high intraspecific variation.

This project will assess impacts of climate change on stream resources by considering the role of thermal heterogeneity and altered hydrologic regimes. The project will look at streams in Washington, Oregon, and California to develop a case study that stream stewards and conservation planners can use to assess vulnerability for Pacific salmon.Successful adaptation strategies for freshwater biota will consider how spatial patterns in water temperature may respond to climate change. Using remotely sensed spatially continuous maximum water temperature data for~ 30 large rivers throughout the lower portion of the NPLCC, we will map locations of cold water patches, identify potential hydroclimatic and landscape drivers,...
