This imagery dataset consists of 3-meter resolution, lidar-derived imagery of the Front Royal 30 x 60 minute quadrangle in West Virginia and Virginia. The source data used to construct this imagery consists of 1-meter lidar-derived digital elevation models (DEMs) and lidar point cloud (LPC). The lidar source data were compiled from different acquisitions published between 2014 and 2021. The data were processed using geographic information systems (GIS) software. The data is projected in WGS 1984 Web Mercator. This representation illustrates the terrain as a hillshade with contrast adjusted to highlight local relief according to a topographic position index (TPI) calculation.

Proppants used during hydraulic fracturing of oil and gas wells are manufactured to maximize petroleum yield by controlling the size, shape, density, and strength of the proppant material. The most common types of proppants are mined silica sand and manufactured ceramics, some of which are further modified with organic resin coatings to improve performance. Much of the work on the environmental and human health effects of proppant releases into the environment has focused on occupational silicosis, with little attention given to the potential effects from the organic coatings on these materials. We apply a research approach that can inform riparian restoration planning by developing products that show recent trends in vegetation conditions identifying areas potentially more at risk for degradation and the associated relationship between riparian vegetation dynamics and climate conditions. The vegetation is characterized using a series of remote sensing vegetation indices developing using satellite imagery, including the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and Tasseled Cap (TC) Transformation metrics of brightness, greenness, and wetness. Lake-bottom sediment and associated quality-control samples were collected in August 2020 from one coring location (U.S. Geological Survey station 413756070321301, ASHUMET POND, MASHPEE MI-ASHPD-0011) in Ashumet Pond downgradient from a former fire-training area on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. The core was collected to determine if per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) were present in the bottom sediments of a lake known to have elevated concentrations of PFAS in surface water and groundwater (Tokranov and others, 2021), and whether the sediments could act as a continuous source of PFAS to the lake. PHREEQC files included in this ScienceBase product include the input (.pqi) and output (.pqo) files formatted for use in PHREEQC and as basic text files, and the information regarding samples used in the simulations. On March 19, 2008, an explosive eruption occurred at the summit of Kīlauea Volcano for the first time since 1924. This event marked the beginning of a continuous summit eruption that lasted until the 2018 Kīlauea lower East Rift Zone eruption (Neal and others, 2019). The March 19 explosive eruption excavated a crater approximately 35 meters wide and scattered volcanic tephra over a 30-hectare area. Only non-juvenile tephra was erupted on March 19 (Houghton and others, 2011). Two subsequent, minor explosions occurred on April 9 and April 16, 2008. This data release summarizes discrete suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) measurements and continuous estimates of SSC for the Yakima River at Kiona (USGS 12510500) for the period between June 01, 2018 and September 30, 2022. Continuous estimates of SSC were derived primarily through calibrated turbidity records. These data were collected to support a better understanding of how water quality influenced stream metabolism and water stargrass growth in the lower Yakima River.

This data release presents chemical and biological results from an investigation of the uptake of per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) from groundwater contaminated by fire training activities on Cape Cod, Massachusetts conducted from July to August 2019. In the United States and globally, the lack of data on contaminant exposure from unregulated private-well point-of-use (POU) tapwater (TW) is a recognized public health data gap and an obstacle to risk management and homeowner decision making. Mead, Nebraska, is an agricultural community about 30 miles west of Omaha. Smelter slag, containing copper and other trace elements, is widespread in riverbed sediments in the Upper Columbia River near Kettle Falls, WA. To evaluate the potential risk to aquatic life, concentrations of copper and other trace elements were measured in the shallow pore and surface water collected near the sediment-water interface. An in situ pore-water profiler was used to collect a suite of four water samples from above, at, and below the sediment-water interface at each of 11 sampling locations. Samples were collected between July 19-21, 2017. The analysis of water samples included specific conductance, pH, alkalinity, dissolved organic carbon, and a suite of major anions, cations, and trace elements.

An extreme gradient boosting (XGB) machine learning model was developed to predict the distribution of nitrate in shallow groundwater across the conterminous United States (CONUS). Nitrate was predicted at a 1-square-kilometer (km) resolution at a depth below the water table of 10 m. The model builds off a previous XGB machine learning model developed to predict nitrate at domestic and public supply groundwater zones (Ransom and others, 2022) by incorporating additional monitoring well samples and modifying and adding predictor variables.
