Habitat restoration efforts to conserve wildlife species are often conducted along a range of local site conditions, with limited information available to gauge relative outcomes for habitat suitability among sites and identify those that may lead to the greatest returns on restoration investment. We leveraged existing resource selection function models to generate heatmaps of spatially varying habitat suitability improvement potential for the Gunnison Sage-grouse (Centrocercus minimus) based on a suite of habitat restoration actions deployed across crucial habitats within six remaining satellite populations. We first simulated expected change in model covariates (habitat features) from a suite of restoration actions...

The California Coast Range are an area with a long-lived deformation history which includes modern, ongoing right lateral strike slip faulting. Large strike slip faults in the region include the San Andreas fault, the Maacama fault, the Bartlett Springs fault among many others. In areas where strike slip fault geometry changes, either in restraining or releasing bends, vertical motion may occur in response to dominant right-lateral deformation. Channel steepness and chi data may be used to identify areas of recent uplift where the bedrock hardness and local precipitation gradients are known. This dataset provides a map of channel steepness and chi and was generated with Land Surface Dynamics Topography Tools software...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) installed acoustic bedload monitoring systems at four sites along the Trinity River below Lewiston Dam to record the noise generated by mobilized bed material, known as sediment generated noise (SGN) (Geay and others, 2017). The four sites are: Trinity River at Lewiston (TRAL, 11525500), Trinity River above Grass Valley Creek (TRGVC, 11525630), Trinity River at Limekiln Gulch (TRLG, 11525655) and Trinity River at Douglas City (TRDC, 11525854). These sites were selected because bedload measurements are frequently made at these locations during restoration flows as part of monitoring done by the Trinity River Restoration Program (TRRP). Monitoring took place in the spring of 2015,...

A multiple machine-learning model (Asquith and Killian, 2024) implementing Cubist and Random Forest regressions was used to predict monthly mean groundwater levels through time for the available years described in the metadata for the Mississippi River Valley alluvial aquifer (MRVA). The MRVA is the surficial aquifer of the Mississippi Alluvial Plain (MAP), located in the south-central United States. Employing two machine-learning techniques offered the opportunity to generate model and statistical error and covariance between them to estimate total uncertainty. Potentiometric surface predictions were made at the 1-kilometer grid scale using the National Hydrogeologic Grid (Clark and others, 2018). For a full description...

The Hamilton Wetland Restoration Project (HWRP) is a joint venture between the US Army Corps of Engineers (USACE; San Francisco District) and the California State Coastal Conservancy. The site is located on the property of the former Hamilton Army Airfield in Novato, California, along the western edge of San Pablo Bay, which is part of northern San Francisco Bay. The initial stages of wetland restoration, which included dredged sediment reuse, took place during 2009–2011. From 2011 until April 2014, the site was maintained as partially flooded through a temporary one-way culvert that allowed bay water onto the site. On April 25th, 2014, the outboard levee towards the north-eastern corner of the site was breached...

This study examined effects of the brominated flame retardant hexabromocyclododecane (HBCD) on the avian endocrine system. Japanese quail (Coturnix japonica) were exposed to multiple doses of HBCD over multiple generations through feed and by maternal deposition into the egg. Liver transcriptomes were examined to identify genes and pathways directly affected by HBCD to better understand the mechanisms of action in birds. RNA was extracted from liver of adults and embryos and analyzed (1x50 bp) on an Illumina HiSeq 2000. NCBI Biosample accessions and the raw counts that were input into the differential expression analysis are provided in this dataset. The raw sequence data are available at the NCBI Sequence Read...

Fragment data from 11 nuclear microsatellite loci and sequence data from the mitochondrial cytochrome b gene were gathered from Arctic cod (Boreogadus saida) in the Beaufort and Chukchi seas. Mitogenomic analyses of Arctic cod and three other co-distributed gadoids (Polar cod [Arctogadus glacialis], Saffron cod [Eleginus gracilis], Walleye Pollock [Gadus chalcogrammus]) were also completed. Transcriptomic analyses of Arctic cod were used to identify genes associated with environmental perturbations. Genome-wide scans using RAD-Seq of Arctic cod and the co-distributed Polar Cod were collected.

These data are part of the Gulf Watch Alaska (GWA) long term monitoring program, nearshore monitoring component. Specifically, these data describe sea otter (Enhydra lutris) aerial survey observations from the waters around Katmai National Park and Preserve from surveys conducted in 2008, 2012, 2015, and 2018. Sea otters are a keystone predator, well known for structuring the nearshore marine ecosystem through their consumption of invertebrate prey. The dataset consists of 3 comma-delimited files (CSV) exported from Microsoft Excel. The data consists of (1) Strip transect counts, (2) Intensive Search Unit (ISU) counts, and (3) Transect coordinates. For each aerial survey, a pilot flew an airplane at an altitude...

This dataset contains absolute-gravity data collected by the USGS Southwest Gravity Program, a collaborative effort of the Arizona, California, and New Mexico Water Science Centers to monitor and model groundwater-storage change. Data were collected following the methods in "Procedures for Field Data Collection, Processing, Quality Assurance and Quality Control, and Archiving of Relative and Absolute-Gravity Surveys", U.S. Geological Survey Techniques and Methods book 2, chapter D4 . All data are reviewed and approved. Additional gravity data, including network-adjusted relative- and absolute-gravity data, may be available in ScienceBase Data Releases.Gravity data are provided as two files:sgp_agdb_stations_YYYY-MM-DD.csv...

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) monitors water surface flow reversals, commercial vessel traffic, and temperature and specific conductance in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Electric Dispersal Barrier System (EDBS) on the Chicago Sanitary and Ship Canal, Chicago, Illinois. These data are planned to be released on USGS ScienceBase annually. This data release is the summary of all the data collected during water year 2019 (October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019). Meyers and others (2019) describe all the data collected during October 1, 2018, to September 30, 2019. Water surface flow reversals at the EDBS are monitored using surface velocity radar. Commercial vessel traffic patterns through the EDBS are documented...

A generic, three-dimensional finite-difference model, MODFLOW-2005 (version 1.12.00) and MODPATH-6 (version 6.0.01), was created to better understand the amount of vertical flow and cross-contamination of trichloroethene (TCE) that may be occurring in discontinued extraction wells under current (2018-19) ambient-flow conditions at site 25 of the Edwards Air Force Base, California. The wells are long-screened (100-ft long), contain a surrounding sandpack, and have not been pumped for approximately 10 years. The groundwater flow model utilized multiple observations made from the field measurements of flow and transport to conceptualize, calculate, and simulate in-well flow, and flow in the sand pack. The model was...

These data were released prior to the October 1, 2016 effective date for the USGS’s policy dictating the review, approval, and release of scientific data as referenced in USGS Survey Manual Chapter 502.8 Fundamental Science Practices: Review and Approval of Scientific Data for Release. Digital surfaces and thicknesses of selected hydrogeologic units of the Floridan aquifer system were developed to define an updated hydrogeologic framework as part of the U.S. Geological Survey Groundwater Resources Program. This feature class contains a polygon representing the extent of the Bucatunna clay confining unit. Used to clip contours and rasters of this unit.
