This dataset is one of a suite of products from the Nature’s Network project (naturesnetwork.org). Nature’s Network is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conservation in the Northeast, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural areas they inhabit. Brook Trout probability of occurrence is intended to provide predictions of occupancy (probability of presence) for catchments smaller than 200 km2 in the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic region from Virginia to Maine. The dataset provides predictions under current environmental conditions and for future increases in stream temperature. Brook Trout probability of occurrence (under current climate) is one input used in developing...

Connect the Connecticut is a collaborative effort to identify shared priorities for conserving the Connecticut River Watershed for future generations, considering the value of fish and wildlife species and the natural ecosystems they inhabit. Click here to download the full data package, including all documentation. This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape throughout the Connecticut River Watershed to provide habitat for Moose (Alces alces) based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. Landscape capability integrates factors influencing climate suitability, habitat capability,...
The American Oystercatcher (Haematopus palliatus) is a large shorebird with a bright orange bill used to capture oysters, mussels, and other marine invertebrates. It has been chosen to represent the habitat needs of other species of wildlife that also use saltmarshes, beaches, and other intertidal areas. This dataset depicts the potential capability of the landscape throughout the Northeastern United States to provide habitat for American Oystercatcher, during the breeding season, based on environmental conditions existing in approximately 2010. The download for this dataset includes TNC’s full Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS): stream size, stream temperature, stream gradient, stream geology, lakes and catchments. This dataset represents the results (9/30/2008) of the Northeastern Aquatic Habitat Classification System (NAHCS) GIS map for streams and rivers. This classification focused on mapping a stream habitat types across 13 northeastern states (ME, NH, VT, MA, CT, RI, NY, NJ, PA, MD, DC, DE, VA, WV). Stream and river centerlines were extracted from the USGS National Hydrography Dataset Plus (NH-Plus) 2006 1:100,000 data. These reaches were attributed and placed into classes representing their biopysical setting in terms of...

Available water supply (AWS) is the total volume of water (in centimeters) that should be available to plants when the soil, inclusive of rock fragments, is at field capacity. AWS is calculated as the available water capacity times the thickness of each soil horizon to a specified depth (25 cm). The composition of the each component in the map unit is recorded as a percentage. A composition of 60 indicates that the component typically makes an approcimately 60 percent of the the map unit. A weighted average aggregation method of all component values was computed, with percent composition as the weighing factor. The dataset was derived from the U.S. Department of Agriculture, Natural Resources Conservation Service...

The presence of salt water is an important determinant of ecological communities. This dataset modifies the Northeast Terrestrial Habitat Map (linked below), developed by The Nature Conservancy, to denote the presence of salt water or brackish water as follows: -Wetlands and waters classified by the National Wetland Inventory (http://www.fws.gov/wetlands/) as "marine", plus additional ocean waters to a distance from the coast of 10 km, are considered salt water and assigned a value of "1" -Wetlands and waters classified by the National Wetland Inventory as "upper estuarine" are considered oligohaline and assigned a value of "0.5" -Wetlands and waters classified by the National Wetland Inventory as "estuarine" are...

This data product was created for the project titled: “Application of the Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard (CMECS) to the Northwest Atlantic” which was partially funded by the U.S. Department of the Interior, Fish and Wildlife Service and a joint collaborative project with The Nature Conservancy (Eastern Division Conservation Science), University of Rhode Island (Graduate School of Oceanography), and Massachusetts Department of Fish and Game (Division of Marine Fisheries). In the Northeast United States region, efforts are underway to better organize and integrate spatial marine data to support ocean planning and management efforts. An important step in this process is translating existing...
