As coal companies closed business in Indiana many times they deposited their records at the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS). The records in most cases were delivered in boxes or full filing cabinets without documentation. The IGS has preliminarily sorted through the records filing them by company and if possible county or Township-Range to make them discoverable. The records can contain anything from maps, analysis, logs with or without picks, descriptions, correspondence, etc.

Most projects conducted by the MWRA have attached to them a geotechnical report and accompanying environmental information. There are also eighteen marine drilling reports on work in the Boston Harbor, as well as, two hardbound copies on the Geology of the Waschusett Reservoir Area. All reports are stored in the library at the main facility in Chelsea; however, not all project managers turn over reports to the librarian for storage. Most projects conducted by the MWRA, related to the construction of water and sewer lines, have attached with them, a geotechnical report and accompanying environmental information. Other paper reports include: eighteen marine drilling reports from work in Boston Harbor; as well as two...

Collections of primarily work maps and data from former Indiana Geological Survey employees or colleagues that used data from Indiana Geological Survey source materials.
The National Coal Resources Data System (NCRDS) began as a cooperative venture between the United States Geological Survey (USGS) and State geological agencies in 1975 and focused on the stratigraphy and chemistry of coal. The current component databases of NCRDS include: USTRAT: Stratigraphic data related to coal (e.g. drill holes, measured sections) USCHEM (COALQUAL): Ultimate, proximate, and USGS-generated major-, minor-, and trace-element data for coal samples collected by USGS and States. USCOAL: A historical database of coal resource estimates compiled from publications prior to 1978 The collections referenced here are for historical purposes. The most current and up-to-date coal information is available electronically...
Coal Publication work maps and data for the Indiana Geological Survey are filed by Publication or study area. Materials can include but are not limited to preliminary work maps, data sheets, charts, graphs, tables, photos, and other reference materials.
The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and the U.S. Department of the Interior through the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) jointly managed the Landsat program beginning in the early 1970s. NASA built and launched the satellites and the USGS preserved and distributed an archive of more than three million Landsat images to people in over 180 nations and territories. A joint effort between the Department of Interior and NASA began, ultimately producing the Earth Resources Technology Satellite (ERTS) program. Perhaps the greatest contribution of Landsat is the ability to understand how the Earth's land surface is changing through time.
The Indiana Geological Survey has a library of reference collections and miscellaneous sources of coal information that IGS researchers have collected over the years. The library includes industry publications, annual reports, miscellaneous information pamphlets and books. The materials cover Indiana, the United States, or coal in-general. Much of the material is dated but could be used for historical purpose.
