The Maryland Geological Survey (MGS) Drill Cuttings Collection consists of washed and unwashed cuttings from drilling sites throughout Maryland. The collection includes chips from rock drillings as well as cuttings from unconsolidated Coastal Plain sediment drilling. There are approximately 2,600 boxes (15.5” x 5.5” x 3.4”) in the collection. Each box contains between 20-50 envelopes, bags, or vials of cuttings. Thanks to U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) National Geological and Geophysical Data Preservation Program (NGGDPP) grants, approximately 1,999 boxes of drill cuttings containing over 43,500 envelopes have been inventoried as of August 2021. The Drill Cuttings Collection is now primarily stored in the MGS...

This collection (known internally at Maryland Geological Survey as Component 5) consists of 4,720 items – 4,715 black-and-white aerial photographs (4,688 unique frames plus 27 duplicates) and 5 associated index maps. The aerial photographs were flown or acquired by the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) and organized on a 7.5-minute quadrangle basis. The photographs are black-and-white and approximately 9 in. x 9 in. in size. The scale of the aerial photography varies but ranges from approximately 1:12,000 to 1:35,400. These photographs date from 1936-1991 and were donated to the Maryland Geological Survey (MGS). The index maps serve as a finding aid for several of the flight series flown over five quadrangles...

In 2008, Virginia Department of Energy received by donation from the University of Virginia (UVA) a large collection of rock, mineral, and fossil specimens that was at risk of imminent disposal or dispersal due to the lack of adequate storage facilities. The collection includes many valuable and irreplaceable geologic specimens collected in Virginia by UVA students, faculty, and geoscientists from the early Virginia Geological Survey. Parts of the collection were at one time displayed in the Lewis Brooks Hall of Natural Science, which opened in 1877. Following the closure of the UVA Department of Geology in the 1960s, the collection was moved to various warehouse storage areas, where it was largely forgotten and...

This collection contains 53 New Jersey Zinc Company zinc exploration maps and associated soil logs. They span a large part of northern New Jersey in Morris, Sussex, Hunterdon and Warren counties. The maps are held solely by the NJGWS. At one time these maps and soil logs were the property of the New Jersey Zinc Company but were donated to the NJGWS when the New Jersey Zinc Company went out of business in 1986.

The NJGWS scanned 536 mine site inspection reports (“Crib Sheets”) in its collection. There were two collections of crib sheets collected for mines and quarries inventoried during the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. The data was collected after receiving a federal grant to document the information. These sheets contain information on all mines and quarries in the state. The sheets contain specific information on each mine/quarry, including property owners of the mine at the time, production information, location of the mine/quarry sometimes including lot and block and geologic information.

In 2011, New Jersey Geological Survey (NJGS) drilled a rock core on Upper Denmark Road in Oxford Township in support of New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection arsenic pollution investigation in Oxford, NJ. The rock core was used to characterize bedrock properties and determine presence of arsenic. The NJGS retains the boxes of core in 5-ft lengths, which are available for research.
