The U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with Ashokan Watershed Stream Management Program, investigated the feasibility of bedload monitoring in the upper Esopus Creek watershed, Ulster and Greene Counties, New York (NY), from 2017 to 2020. Traditional bedload samples were collected at two locations: Birch Creek at Big Indian, NY, and Stony Clove at Jansen Rd at Lanesville, NY. Active and passive tracers were used at Stony Clove at Jansen Rd at Lanesville, NY, to measure bed material displacement associated with storm runoff.
This dataset contains the eskerform features within the study area. The delineations indicate the axis of the eskerform feature, which indicates a stagnant glacial ice environment. This digital dataset is the result of a study to investigate the hydrogeology of the Fairport-Lyons channel and inter-drumlin aquifer system and to map the extent of the glacial aquifers in southern Wayne County, New York; it supports USGS SIR 2021-5086, "Hydrogeology of aquifers within the Fairport-Lyons channel system and adjacent areas in Wayne, Ontario, and Seneca Counties, New York."

From 2016 to 2018, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, conducted a study of the glacial geology and hydrogeology of valley-fill (sand and gravel) aquifers and surrounding uplands within a 112-square-mile area in southern Otsego and northwestern Delaware Counties, New York, centered around the city of Oneonta. The major valleys include those of the Susquehanna River, Otego Creek, Charlotte Creek, and Schenevus Creek. A variety of data were compiled, collected, and synthesized to provide a broad picture of the glacial deposits, hydrogeologic framework, aquifer occurrence, and water-resource potential in the area. Geospatial datasets (shapefiles)...

This dataset has been archived; it has been superseded by version 2.0 (June 2022) which can be found at https://doi.org/10.5066/P9ZCMH8S. The dataset is composed of two tables containing environmental DNA (eDNA) data and site location information from round goby (Neogobius melanostomus) surveys conducted on parts of the Champlain Canal and upper Hudson River in New York during spring 2022.
This dataset contains a shapefile of infrastructure locations along the Old Erie Canal. This data release contains spatial datasets of bathymetry, water velocity, water quality, and infrastructure of a 30.8 mile reach of the Old Erie Canal between the Town of DeWitt and its junction with the current Erie Canal of the New York State Canal System in Verona, near Rome, New York during 2018 and 2019.

This child item dataset contains a shapefile of manual observations made during the 2018 survey, and includes measurements of the bathymetry, water level elevation, and water column depth along parts of Old Erie Canal not navigable by boat.

The dataset is composed of six tables containing environmental DNA (eDNA) and electrofishing data from American eel (Anguilla rostrata) surveys conducted on parts of the Mohawk River watershed and tributaries to the Hudson River in New York. The dataset includes (a) eDNA data from 36 sites in the Mohawk River watershed and adjacent areas including parts of the Eastern Erie Canal, Mohawk River, and tributaries that were sampled in spring 2021 and again in summer 2021,(b) paired eDNA/electrofishing data from 15 sites on tributaries to the Hudson River that were sampled between 2020 and 2021, and (c) model output of predicted American eel density from all sites in the Mohawk River watershed and adjacent areas where...

An important component of assessing the hazards of anticoagulant rodenticides to non-target wildlife are observations in exposed free-ranging individuals. The objective of this study was to determine if environmentally realistic, sublethal first-generation anticoagulant rodenticide exposures via prey, can result in direct or indirect adverse effects to free-flying raptors. We offered black-tailed prairie dogs (Cynomys ludovicianus) that had fed on Rozol® Prairie Dog Bait (0.005% active ingredient chlorophacinone) to six wild-caught red-tailed hawks (RTHA, Buteo jamaicensis), and uncontaminated black-tailed prairie dogs to two wild-caught RTHAs for 7 days. On day 6, blood was collected from all eight RTHAs to determine...

Problem - The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) provided technical assistance between 2001 and 2013 to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) in an investigation of the presence of chlorinated solvents (trichloroethylene and degradates) in ground water in the Middle-to-Lower Devonian and Upper Silurian carbonate bedrock southwest of Auburn in Cayuga County, N.Y. Pieziometric and water-quality data from the wells indicate that contaminants may have migrated in the bedrock as far as 7 miles toward discharge areas that are in an adjacent surface-water basin. The ground-water contamination site was added to the Super Fund priority list in 2003. Objectives - The objective of the work is to characterize the stratigraphy,...

In 2016, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation, collected horizontal-to-vertical seismic soundings at 31 locations in the Owasco Inlet valley, Cayuga and Tompkins Counties, New York to help determine thickness of the unconsolidated deposits. The HVSR technique, commonly referred to as the passive-seismic method, is used to estimate the thickness of unconsolidated sediments and the depth to bedrock (Lane and others, 2008; Fairchild and others, 2013). The passive-seismic method uses a single, broad-band three-component (two horizontal and one vertical) seismometer to record ambient seismic noise. In areas that have a strong acoustic contrast between...

This child item model archive summary documents a surrogate regression model to estimate suspended-sediment concentration (SSC) at the Schoharie Creek at Burtonsville, New York (U.S. Geological Survey station number 01351500). The methods used follow USGS guidance in relevant Office of Surface Water/Office of Water Quality Technical Memoranda and USGS Techniques and Methods, book 3, chap. 4 (Rasmussen and others, 2009). Sixty-one concurrent measurements of SSC and turbidity, collected from October 1, 2015, through May 2, 2020, were used in the model calibration dataset. Samples were collected across 75 percent of the range in observed discharge and 87 percent of the range in observed turbidity during the model calibration...

The dataset is composed of two tables containing data collected during screening surveys for invasive Round Goby (Neogobius melanostomus) on the Eastern Erie Canal in New York. Environmental DNA using water samples and traditional fish surveys using benthic trawling, seining, and trapping were conducted twice annually at 12 sites on the Eastern Erie Canal between Oneida Lake and the Hudson River from 2016-2019. Study sites were selected to be approximately equidistant apart (~ 20 km) while also taking advantage of suitable access points. Within a study site, the exact areas that were sampled were often staggered by 500 m or occasionally more in order to find appropriate habitat for each gear type (i.e., wadable...
