The Washington Connected Landscapes Project: Statewide Analysis presented a vision for a connected network of habitats for wildlife in current condition. This climate-gradient corridor analysis and report adds a climate change lens to that assessment, by identifying corridors intended to improve the ability of wildlife and their habitats to respond to future changes in climate.A key means by which wildlife respond to climate change is to adjust their geographic ranges to track shifting areas of climatic suitability. This ability to move as conditions change will become even more critical over the coming century as climate change becomes more severe. And yet, species will increasingly encounter human-made barriers...

This GIS dataset is part of a suite of wildlife habitat connectivity data produced by the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group (WHCWG). The WHCWG is a voluntary public-private partnership between state and federal agencies, universities, tribes, and non-governmental organizations. The WHCWG is co-led by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) and the Washington Department of Transportation (WSDOT). This dataset quantifies current wildlife habitat connectivity patterns for the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion in Washington, Oregon, and Idaho. Available WHCWG raster data include model base layers, resistance, habitat, cost-weighted distance, and landscape integrity. Grid cell size is 90 m...

The Washington Connected Landscapes Project will provide a framework to address the interacting impacts of habitat fragmentation and climate change on ecological systems and wildlife species within the Great Northern Landscape Conservation Cooperative (GNLCC) boundary.Managing for well-connected landscapes is a key strategy to enhance resilience and ensure the long-term viability of plant and animal populations. However, conservation planning efforts have rarely included connectivity for ecological processes such as dispersal, migration, and gene flow. Connectivity conservation is particularly important in the face of climate change, because many species will require highly permeable, well-connected landscapes not...

This document is an addendum to the Washington Connected Landscapes Project: Columbia Plateau Climate-Gradient Corridor Analysis (WHCWG 2013a; available from http://waconnected.org). It includes supplemental maps and guidance that can help prioritize and implement connectivity conservation actions that may benefit species under climate change. The analyses presented in the addendum build upon the climate-gradient corridors modeled for the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion and a surrounding buffer area (Fig. 1; WHCWG 2013a). The supplemental products in this addendum include maps, interpretive examples, and GIS files depicting linkage pinch-points and barriers and restoration opportunities for climate-gradient corridors...

Our 2010 statewide connectivity analysis identified broad-scale priority areas for connectivity conservation. More detailed, finer-scale analyses will give land managers the information they need to begin prioritizing and implementing conservation actions. The Columbia Plateau (Appendix A, Fig. 1) was selected for the first ecoregional-scale analysis for two reasons. First, several climate models suggest that the Columbia Plateau Ecoregion in Washington is likely to be a stronghold of shrubsteppe ecosystems under climate change. Second, despite the high level of habitat loss and fragmentation in the ecoregion, our statewide analysis identified previously undocumented patterns and opportunities for multiple-species...

Gnarly Landscape Utilities is an ArcGIS toolbox designed to support some of the less-glamorous tasks involved with connectivity modeling. It includes tools for creating resistance and habitat layers and core area mapping. The core area mapping functionality was formerly packaged as the HCA Toolkit. We created the tools to support connectivity analyses by the Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group as well as work by the Western Governors' Association and the Nature Conservancy. They can be used to create resistance, habitat, and core area maps used by Linkage Mapper, Circuitscape, and other connectivity software packages.

We propose an international partnership to facilitate the identification of habitat connectivity conservation opportunities and implementation of connectivity projects in the transboundary area of Washington and British Columbia. The project will engage a transboundary subgroup of the WHCWG co-led by experts from both Washington and British Columbia to: (1) summarize and interpret our statewide and Columbia Plateau ecoregional products (see www.waconnected.org), as well as provincial products, with the objective of highlighting general connectivity patterns and to define where and how to focus our operational-scale transboundary habitat connectivity analyses; (2) establish subregional teams to collaborate on finer-scale...

The Washington Wildlife Habitat Connectivity Working Group is an open scientific collaborative effort to produce connectivity and tools for Washington and surrounding habitats. The Washington Connected Landscapes Project is the name for the suite of analysis and tools being produced by the working group. The primary thrusts of the project at this time include: scientific analyses of connectivity issues at different spatial scales for current and future landscape conditions, development of suitable analytical methods and tools necessary to support these analyses, coordination with transboundary partners to maintain connectivity across Washington’s borders, research and adaptive management to test and improve...
