The roselaari subspecies of Red Knot is one of the rarest shorebird populations breeding in North America, based on a the current population size estimate of 17,000 individuals (Carmona et al 2013). As a result of suspected declines, the roselaari subspecies has been designated as threatened by the Committee on the Status of Endangered Wildlife in Canada and was petitioned for listing under the U.S. Endangered Species Act. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s decision to not conduct a full status review for listing was based on the lack of substantial information identifying threats and population trends (USFWS 2011). The apparent low population size coupled with the scarcity of information on many demographic and...

The document reviews the theory of distance sampling, important assumptions, and case studies where distance sampling has been used. Reported in this document are results from some power analysis to guide design of a pilot study. This report became part of a Master’s thesis project and was used for development of a field protocol.

This R code uses the nest card data (“Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv”), cumulative observer experience data (“cumnest.csv”), and the output from the detection model to produce nest population estimates for focal species or species groups. Model results used are the the maximum likelihood estimates and covariance matrix from Program Mark for “model 7” or from a Bayesian posterior distribution based on a generalized linear mixed model for detection with random effects for plot, year, and crew. Results from “model 7” are produced only to provide population estimates based on legacy methods as reported in past reports. For final estimates, results from the Bayesian posterior should be used. Result from either model cannot...

The Spectacled Recovery Plan identified annual nesting surveys as the primary method to assess recovery status for Alaska’s Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta (YKD) subpopulation. In addition to documenting population status for spectacled eiders, the survey provides annual information on egg production, nesting effort, phenology, and habitat use for three other focal species including cackling geese, emperor geese, and greater white-fronted geese. Numbers of nests of the four species are stable or increasing in the short-term (2007-2016) and long-term (1985-2016). In 2016, the estimated number of spectacled eider nests (9,464) was the second highest in the history of the survey, but nest success was poor and clutch size very...

Combined population indices for the USFWS Region Migratory Bird Management Arctic Coastal Plain study area. The survey consists of low-level aerial observations of waterfowl on a stratified strip transect design. The resulting data frame is several indices combined over observers (or single observer in years where estimates were not combined) and calculated using a standard ratio estimator. These data are output from the R package AKaerial and are also available within that package, see https://github.com/USFWS/AKaerial. The data used to produce these estimates contain known errors. Many but not all of these errors are corrected within the R package AKaerial. These data are presented for historical purposes only....

Spatial patterns in mussel richness and endemism (i.e., weighted and corrected weighted endemism) at stream reach, HUC4, HUC6, and HUC8 spatial scales were characterized. Stream SR was estimated by summing the total number of mussel species predicted within each stream. Stream-level weighted endemism was calculated by weighting each species’ presence in the stream by the inverse of the total number of streams it was predicted to occupy, then summing across all species predicted present within the stream. This biodiversity metric therefore provides context about the range extent of the species predicted within the stream (e.g., higher values indicate either high richness or the presence of several range-restricted...

This is an SQLite GeoPackage simple feature multipolygon vector database of the Arctic Coastal Plain survey area transect density strata. There is only one layer that gives the strata boundaries in EPSG:4326. The field “Statra” gives the strata name and the “geom” field gives the simple feature Well Known Text geometry data. See the GitHub site for more information. This product was produced from the file ACPmapping.R and is simplified from the original strata files distributed at https://www.sciencebase.gov/catalog/item/65419a58d34ee4b6e05bd001.

This is the raw nest card data as transcribed from the hard copy nest cards used in the field, 1985 to 2019. No attempt has been made for quality control on these data. These data are quality control using the R code in the file ‘Nest_Cards_QC.R’ to produce the data used for population estimate in file ‘Nest_Cards_1985_2019_QC.csv’. These data should not generally be used or distributed other than when the quality control process is revised and downstream data file need to be recreated (i.e., information is needed from these raw data that is not represented in the quality control files).

This document is a report on a project for a Masters student thesis to understand distance sampling to estimate eider and goose nest density. The abstract from the report is:The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service currently conducts annual surveys to estimate bird nest abundanceon the Yukon-Kuskokwim Delta, Alaska. The current method involves intensive searching on large plots withthe goal of finding every nest on the plot. Distance sampling is a well-established transect-based methodto estimate density or abundance that accounts for imperfect detection of objects. It relies on estimatingthe probability of detecting an object given its distance from the transect line, or the detection function.Simulations were done using...

DATA ANALYSIS AND VISUALIZATION,
Marshes may drown if they are unable to accrete sediment at the rate of sea level rise, but predicting the rate of sediment accretion at different marshes is challenging because many processes (e.g. tidal range, wave frequency) and conditions (e.g. available sediment, vegetation density, shape of the marsh edge) impact it. The Coupled Ocean-Atmosphere-Wave-Sediment Transport (COAWST, Warner and others 2019; Warner and others 2010) model was used to simulate three-dimensional hydrodynamics, waves, and sediment transport on a marsh platform in an idealized domain. The computational grid was 400 (20) cells in the cross-shore (along-shore) directions with 10 vertical sigma layers, and a cross-shore horizontal resolution...

The Pacific Flyway Winter Brant Survey (WBS) has been conducted annually since 1981 as part of a cooperative effort by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, Canadian Wildlife Service, Mexico, and the Pacific U.S. states, to estimate the abundance of the Pacific black brant (Branta bernicla nigricans) in their principal wintering areas along the Pacific Coast (in Baja, Mexico, California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska). The survey is conducted each winter in January-February by a composite of ground and aerial crews, with the Alaska portion being conducted by the Alaska Region of USFWS Migratory Bird Management. The primary objective of the Alaska survey component is to provide an annual index of...

This file contains information on Dunlin resightings and recaptures along the East Asian-Australasian flyway, and elsewhere, including date and time, location, and band combination of resighting or recapture, as well as tagging information. A portion of these data (as indicated by field ‘Lagasse.2020’) were used to determine migration along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway (EAAF). General methods are available in Lagassé et al. 2020. Dunlin subspecies exhibit regional segregation and high site fidelity along the East Asian–Australasian Flyway. The Condor: Ornithological Applications 122. https://doi.org/10.1093/condor/duaa054. For this analysis data were restricted to resightings within the EAAF that occurred...

The Arctic Coastal Plain Aerial Breeding Pair Survey provides data on distribution, abundance, and trend of 33 bird species that nest in northern Alaska. The survey has been conducted in its current form annually since 2007. Methods follow the standard operating procedures for the Waterfowl Breeding Population and Habitat Survey. Primary uses of the survey data are to evaluate recovery status of Spectacled Eider (Somateria fischeri) and Steller’s Eider (Polysticta stelleri), as well as monitor species of conservation concern including Lesser Snow Goose (Chen caerulescens caerulescens), Yellow-billed Loon (Gavia adamsii), Red-throated Loon (G. stellata), and Black Brant (Branta bernicla nigricans). Survey data are...
