This part of the data release presents topography data from northern Monterey Bay, California collected in September 2015 using a tripod-mounted Riegl VZ-1000 lidar scanner (USGS Field Activity 2015-668-FA). For each area surveyed, the scanner was placed at several positions which were selected to provide maximum line-of-sight coverage of the area of interest. Scans were typically conducted in panoramic mode, creating a detailed point cloud of all unobstructed surfaces in a 360 degree view of the scanner. At each scan position, co-registered photographic imagery was also collected with a scanner mounted DSLR camera. Scanner registration was performed by placing four or more cylindrical or flat reflective tripod-mounted...

Water supply lakes are the primary source of water for many communities in northern and western Missouri. Therefore, accurate and up-to-date estimates of lake capacity are important for managing and predicting adequate water supply. Many of the water supply lakes in Missouri were previously surveyed by the U.S. Geological Survey in the early 2000s (Richards, 2013) and in 2013 (Huizinga, 2014); however, years of potential sedimentation may have resulted in reduced water storage capacity. Periodic bathymetric surveys are useful to update the area/capacity table and to determine changes in the bathymetric surface. From July 2019 to June 2020, the U.S. Geological Survey, in cooperation with the Missouri Department...

This dataset is a LAS (industry-standard binary format for storing large point clouds) dataset containing light detection and ranging (LiDAR) data and sonar data representing the beach and near-shore topography of Lake Superior at Minnesota Point, Duluth, Minnesota. Average point spacing of the LAS files in the dataset are as follows: LiDAR, 0.137 meters (m); multi-beam sonar, 1.029 m; single-beam sonar, 0.999 m. The LAS dataset was used to create a 10-m (32.8084 feet) digital elevation model (DEM) of the approximately 5.9 square kilometer (2.3 square mile) surveyed area using the "LAS dataset to raster" tool in Esri ArcGIS, version 10.7. LiDAR data were collected August 10, 2019 using a boat-mounted Optech ILRIS...

This portion of the USGS data release presents bathymetry data collected during surveys performed in northern Monterey Bay, California in March 2017 (USGS Field Activity Number 2017-620-FA). Bathymetry data were collected using two personal watercraft (PWCs) equipped with single-beam sonar systems and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. Depths from the echosounders were computed using sound velocity profiles measured using a YSI CastAway CTD during the survey. Positioning of the survey vessels was was determined at 10-Hz using Trimble R7 GNSS receivers and Zephyr 2 antennas. Output from the GNSS receivers and sonar systems were combined in real time on the PWC by a computer running HYPACK hydrographic...

This portion of the USGS data release presents topography data collected during surveys performed in the Columbia River littoral cell, Washington and Oregon, in 2018 (USGS Field Activity Number 2018-652-FA). Topographic profiles were collected by walking along survey lines with global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers mounted on backpacks. Prior to data collection, vertical distances between the GNSS antennas and the ground were measured using a tape measure. Hand-held data collectors were used to log raw data and display navigational information allowing surveyors to navigate survey lines spaced at 100- to 1000-m intervals along the beach. Profiles were surveyed from the landward edge of the study area...

Bathymetry data were collected using four personal watercraft (PWCs) equipped with single-beam sonar systems and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receivers. The sonar systems consisted of an Odom Echotrac CV-100 single-beam echosounder and 200 kHz transducer with a 9-degree beam angle. Raw acoustic backscatter returns were digitized by the echosounder with a vertical resolution of 1.25 cm. Depths from the echosounders were computed using sound velocity profiles measured using a YSI CastAway CTD during...

A bathymetric survey of Nimrod Lake, Arkansas, was conducted in late April to mid-May, 2016, by the Lower Mississippi-Gulf Water Science Center (LMG WSC) of the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) using methodologies for sonar surveys similar to those described by Wilson and Richards (2006) and Richards and Huizinga (2018). Point data from the bathymetric survey were merged with point data from an aerial LiDAR survey conducted in December, 2010, that were provided by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), Little Rock District. From the combined point dataset, a terrain dataset (a type of triangulated irregular network, or TIN, model) was created in Esri ArcGIS, version 10.5, for the area within the approximate extent...

Using high-resolution sonar technologies with geographic information systems (GIS) and object based image analysis, benthic habitats of the Illinois River will be interpreted to support Asian carp research, monitoring and control. The entire study plan will consist of data collection and analysis of the Brandon, Dresden, Starved Rock, Marseilles, Peoria, La Grange and Alton reaches of the Illinois River. Reaches with larger aquatic areas (Peoria, La Grange and Alton), will have priority areas and backwaters collected and analyzed first.

Orthoimages were created from aerial imagery collected between August 30 and September 2, 2019, along the North Carolina coast between the Virginia-North Carolina border vicinity and Cape Lookout, North Carolina. These RBG-averaged orthoimages were created to document ground conditions prior to Hurricane Dorian, which made landfall on the North Carolina coast on September 6, 2019. The RBG-averaged orthoimages help researchers estimate the land surface before Hurricane Dorian and were created to document inter-annual changes in shoreline position and coastal morphology in response to storm events using aerial imagery collections and a structure from motion (SFM) workflow. These data can be used with geographic information...
This portion of the USGS data release presents eelgrass distribution and bathymetry data derived from acoustic surveys of the Nisqually River delta, Washington in 2012 (USGS Field Activity Number D-01-12-PS). Eelgrass and bathymetry data were collected from the R/V George Davidson equipped with a single-beam sonar system and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) receiver. The sonar system consisted of a Biosonics DT-X single-beam echosounder and 420 kHz transducer with a 6-degree beam angle. Depths from the echosounder were computed using sound velocity assuming a salinity of 30 psu and temperature of 10 degrees Celcius. Positioning of the survey vessel was determined at 5 to 10 Hz using a Trimble R7 GNSS receiver...
